SOTA activators rely on the RBN to get us spotted on summits. There is software that looks for RBN spots, and then looks at SOTA alerts. If the software sees a match, we got our SOTA activation spotted. We set up the SOTA alert for our bands we plan to activate before we hike up.

What is the software?

@@halledwardb It's called RBNHole. It is run for us, so we don't need to run it ourselves.

To help the RBN system to copy my CQ I use the memory keyer built into most transceivers....this especially important since my CW FIST not FB. Like Dave sez, RBN a great way to compare antennas .... 73/K6SDW

Hi Dave- Great video on RBN. Do the SDR’s at the beacon monitors copy CW code at only a certain WPM? What is the range? Thx- 73’…Joe / KG0HG

8:50 The timing problem is 100% true with a straight key. The timing should be exact with an elbug.

Your friend does not send with the correct timing. If the beacon cannot read what you are sending it cannot spot you.

It is possible to be picked up by RBN with a straight key. I've done it before. DE K7RLN

Good advice. Even better explanation. I’m new to ham radio, I have paddles, but cannot for the life of me get spotted by the RBN. So frustrating. So, I use WebSDR to see where I’m reaching. After a while you get a good picture of what’s happening in terms of propagation, antenna quality mineI needs work!) and my coverage area. Many thanks, Dave.

Thanks for sharing this tip about the RBN. I typically use PSK Reporter and FT8 for testing antennas and propagation, but the RBN is a handy tool too.

I use RBN daily and send with a bug or straight key and never had a problem being picked up
