Hopefully the gannet population will recover. Your pictures of them are fab. Birds in flight is really fun, at the moment I'm trying to get a decent image of a swift. Have taken hundreds of photos, no luck yet, but enjoying every attempt, makes me feel happy and content. Your videos are inspiring, please keep doing them.

Kim! It seems we may have switched. You've got the warm and sunny weather while Boston is 10c with lots of clouds and rain all weekend. The bird situation is so sad. However, my sister lives in England and a couple weeks ago made it to the lone puffin viewing location and texted me some photos. Needless to say, I was jealous. With my work and various appointments, I don't always get to go at the "optimal time" so I don't worry about perfect conditions as I'd rather be out in nature than in my apartment wishing for better conditions. Even with rain and cooler temps tomorrow, it's my chance to do some droplet photography on the beautiful flowers in my neighborhood! It's hard for me to pinpoint a "favorite" type of photography which is why I don't bother with the struggle of being a specialist vs a more general photographer. I think my "specialty" is just nature and that's what makes me happy. Especially macro insects like bees, landscapes of the beautiful New England autumn colors, black and white, flowers, photos of people doing things like holding hands or having fun. Just so much about capturing beauty and being out in nature is my "specialty" nowadays. As usual, spectacular images! Thank you for sharing with us!

Kim I had a similar experience in Southwestern Colorado... in the San Juan mountains there are evergreen trees for miles... it's beautiful... a few years ago, an infestation of Pine Beetles killed thousands of trees... so much so, there was more brown than green in your field of vision. It was truly sad. I'm happy to say it's coming back now. Beautiful B/W shots Kim !!

Lovely gannets! I didn't expect the difference between b&w and colour to be so remarkable, but it really was. Those b&w pictures really showed the gannets from their best side in their true environment. You can literally smell the coastal air and hear the swarms of birds over your head! Living in the mountainious inlands(?) of Norway, the coast is far away, and I sometimes miss the overwhelming sound of seabirds gathering on coastal cliffs in early summer. But, I have my dippers😊

I'm 74 & too poorly to walk to these great locations so am limited to places I can drive to. If you can recommend a locations book I'd appreciate it. Thx for another great video, Kim. Last night we discussed in my camera club how AI pictures generated from verbal descriptions threaten traditional photography. There are undoubtedly scary perspectives regarding media and truth-telling. Still, for guys like us, it’s all about the pleasure of going out there with an open mind, enjoying life, observing, and making the best possible photographs out of what we see.

Hi Kim. Your wonderful photographs tell such a powerful story of the plight of these gannets and the difficulties that currently surround nature both natural and non-natural. Hopefully through your images more people are made aware of this story. Lets just hope this colony of gannets recovers back to its former numbers. Cheers, Stu

I never cared much for BnW either. To me it was always hum drum until I converted one, that for some reason, called out to be BnW and it transformed my thinking about it. Like you say, it just has to be that certain image that calls out to be different.

As much as I love color photography for most of what I photograph, i i find B&W PHOTOGRAPHY has a greater impact on some photos, in the years that I have photographed events, like weddings, some of my favorite photos were one's that I converted to B&W, the reason that I did not take the photos as black and white to begin with is that i wanted to give my clients a color and B&W copy of the same photo and photographing events many photos that you take are not posed shots, they happen in real time and its not possible to get a color and B&W photo that are exactly the same.

Black and white images certainly worked for you and I see that monochrome is gaining in popularity, so much so that Pentax have released a totally monochrome DSLR. It’s a step to far for me but I can see the appeal for others. Thanks for the video, the inspiration you gave is fantastic.

hi kim, i see you take pictures of birds in flight. what is your technique? bursts in the hope that one is the right one, or the old method of just trying to capture the precise moment by taking a single photo? At least I do it that way, I think it speaks more about the photographer's ability than the camera he uses...do you think ?
@kimgrantphotography
@kimgrantphotography Год назад
I personally use the old method. I prefer not to have thousands of images to search through then I get home. Means I usually only have 3 images of each bird passing rather than several
