I made this to replace the original fence completely. It adds support near the blade and reduces the amount of tear-out. It's also higher on both sides for extra support.

Hey John, thinking about the dust collection and thought if you enclosed the back of the fence and connect it to your dust collection. Then put some slots thru the fence face. Wondered how that might do for dust collection. Frank Howarth has this on his radial arm saws. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rwd6i3UmbMI.html

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about enclosing the back for dust collection before the video was half way through. (Please put the various 'Blade Guards' in place.) Despite guard placement... A Great Project Video!

Dude couldn’t resist after all the time I’ve learned stuff from you. Pay back time. Life is short, I’m getting older. I’m finally a patron , well you know what I mean. I been wanting to ask you some dumb or not so dumb questions for years now. Finally get my chance. I’m a slow starter so don’t hold your breath. I enjoy watching you work and listening to your ideas and or raves. I know I’ve watched this particular video at least four times and still trying to figure out if I can alter my beginners miter saw. I tend to lose focus so that’s my excuse. Gonna cut some plywood as soon as I relocate the cat in my garage. No joke, hopefully the last stray I take in for years to come. Working on it now.

This new fence just screams MITRES!! It looks functional, looks very rigid, and also very eye pleasing. I would try adding vertical braces near the mitre cut slot but it would look as if it were slapped together from scraps. Your solution looks even sturdier and more elegant. Nice job!!!

At the time I got the notification of this video I was very busy working on my new video (it took me more than 20 hours to edit) Now it's finally online I got some time to lean back and watch videos to relax. I like how you made the fence with the curved strengthening in the back. Oh yeah, I also like the transition you made on 3:30, You saw my video, I have a weakness for stuff like that LOL. Greetings C

John - greatly trust your ingenuity in the shop. Been looking for "space requirements" for using different machines effectively. For example: Can I get by with 6 foot infeed to my miter saw or do I need to allow almost 8 feet. Can I get by with 4 foot outfeed on my miter saw or do I need more room. A video series on what minimum clearances we need to allow would be very beneficial. Thanks for what you do for the rest of us.....

Hey John, I really appreciate your carefree approach to working in the shop. When I built a zero clearance fence, I had to remove the dust collection boot on the blade shroud. Coupled with the high fence, I found a lot of cuttings end up in front of the fence and on me when the blade was ahead of the fence. So I removed the fence and work around the breakout on the back of the work piece. I was just wondering if you or others were having similar experiences. I know 180 degree booth enclosures are being used with some success. Cheers
@JohnHeisz
@JohnHeisz 4 года назад
I mentioned this in the build article. Dust collection is improved for smaller parts with this, but worse with wider pieces. Overall, I don't see the issue as something needs to be solved - it is a workshop, after all, so some dust will fly :)

I like that fence John, I have noticed that mitre saw fences are usually too short. I too rarely use my mitre saw with the blade out of plumb, it is tall skirting boards that make it an occasional requirement !
@tbc210
@tbc210 4 года назад
This looks like a really nice fence. That’s a great idea making it in one piece like that. You mentioned that the dust collection isn’t that great on account of the small cut out for the blade. What if you drilled a bunch of small holes on either side of the cut out, sort of like on a downdraft table? Then you could enclose the rear part and fit a vacuum hose in there, or connect it to the existing dust collection opening back there somehow? Not sure if it would work, just a thought!

Good morning John. I have been considering doing about the same thing for dust collection. I figure the bottom plate in the saw don’t need to be cut through (make it thicker) leaving a closed channel, then make a fence much as you just did with the top and bottom left solid (not cut out) . Close in the back and add a vacuum port and there you have it. Thanks John! You are very creative!

I have this exact same saw. It's the previous generation Hitachi C12RSH. The thing weighs a ton. Excellent saw for the money and the sliding rails do not move backwards so I can put it right up against the wall. I picked mine up at Lowe's for $275 when they went on clearance. Question. Does your zero clearance insert allow you to make bevel cuts? Or do you have to remove it first?
@JeffreyMoon1974
@JeffreyMoon1974 4 года назад
Nice build, John. I had to replace the fence on my miter saw with something similar a few years ago because the cast part that served as the fence was not terribly straight. Question: does the piece that you added to reduce the flex in the fence make it more difficult to secure the fence to the base plate? It looked from the video that you came down over the fence with your ratchet wrench; I assume there is enough clearance to come around the side? Again, nice build as all your builds are.

Nice build. I have a Metabo and the fence isn't straight at all. The table is out of level a bit as well. I will be building a fence similar to yours and filing the table flat. Last time I buy Metabo, but I really wanted the zero clearance slide. Lesson learned.

I have a question for you. I have recently found a vintage 50s craftsman table saw. 10 inch blade on the Craftsman 24 x 24 heavy square stand with casters. The factory wrench is still there. I think the original steel blade is still there. The one on it now is carbide tipped. The arbor bearings catch a little bit and you can feel the individual balls rolling around in their races. The electric motor is a 1 hp and it still has the craftsman sticker on it. It still has the original Craftsman micro adjust fence and miter gauge. The original throat plate is still there. The electric motor still runs but the shaft wobbles just a little bit on the pulley end. The top is the extra heavy duty cast-iron with steel. It also has both cast-iron extensions. Other than the fact that it has sat in a garage and surface rusted and needs to be semi-restored, do you think it’s worth purchasing and fixing it up? Thank you. Oh yeah, why would the electric motor have keyways on both ends but only have one pulley mounted on one end?

Just wondering 🤔 when you added the “next day changes” adding the additional top piece with the hoop, don’t you still have to saw through it? Sawing through it would take the rigidity out of it, correct? Yes? No?

Hey John, very nice. I am curious what this does for dust extraction. I feel that it would make it less effective. Of course that was not the design parameter that you were interested in, so no big deal. Perhaps it was a trade-off
@subhenduc
@subhenduc 4 года назад
I had the same question, however you are right, this design makes most of the dust in front of the fence and collecting manually no big deal. I think spending time to build dust collection for wood cutting on chop saw is inefficient and not needed. I don't consider saw dust as the fine dust like sanding that needs real attention.
