After two years I'm finally getting around to finishing the micro-A-frame camping cabin (or wooden tent) I started building during the 2020 lockdown. This episode is all about windows.
Complicated...
Triangle...
Windows...
The special order glass has arrived and it's time to start cutting all those fiddly angles and trim and figuring out how to instal double-pain insulated glass into triangle window openings.

I'm so glad to find this! I've got a GIANT A frame out near Portland that I'm renovating (I think flippers got to it in the 90s and Made Some Choices, which I'm trying to mitigate), and some of the windows that were put in have...no...framing. At all. 😭 So I'm trying to figure out how to do that before the windows I ordered get here..! This is going to be SUPER helpful, thank you so much for sharing!

Oh it’s just 1/8th inch foam weather stripping (amzn.to/45MOsql - sponsored link) - I wanted a nice clean seal with a little wiggle room for potential structural movement/settling. And I didn’t want to use caulk or putty which felt a bit daunting for my first time doing a project like this. Since these particular windows are completely protected from rain it seemed like a good solution.

@GMindset89 Putty would be the traditional method, but honestly I’m no expert, so I’d hit the RU-vids for more specific info.

Thanks for sharing all of this. The glass detail is very helpful, but the impossible task for my A-frame project has been sourcing canvas panels with a zip. What you have is precisely what we’ve been looking for. Presumably it was custom? Where did you find/source it?

Oh thanks! Glad it helped you. The canvas flaps I made myself, before I started filming the process. I’ll share some links Amazon associate links to the stuff I ordered if you want to give it a try. It wasn’t that hard. I bought finished canvas panels of the right size amzn.to/47dnlEh and just measured carefully (allowing a little for shrinkage) cut the triangles using the finished edges for the outside edges and bottom. The zippers amzn.to/3MnaZ4H are available in various lengths and you can cut them as you install them. You just need a reasonably stout sewing machine amzn.to/3Qnfg9n with a heavy needle. If you can handle a circular saw or a table saw, you can use a sewing machine. Hey, thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the video. The glass came to about $600 all told, for all four custom double-pane window inserts. I used a local company here in the PNW, they have a very simple and robust online system that’ll give you tips and guide you through the process, prices included, at OneDayGlass.com - I believe they ship nation wide.

I love it. I'm about to order some glass panes myself, I wonder, did you order it to the exact millimeter of the frame? or did you leave some leeway, like a millimeter on each side or so ?

I think I allowed about 1/8 of an inch on each side (so 1/4” total, or 7 mm) to allow for movement and other tolerances. If you have a 10-15mm of lip on the frame you should be fine with 5mm under on each side.

Thank you for this video, I have 2 huge panels of glass. I have to cut the glass and build frames. I too Am building A frame mini cabin. What type of wood should I use for the frame of the glass panel?

@bro.jamessoc5830 oh I’m definitely not an expert in that area. I usually end up just using whatever I have lying around. On this case I used some white cedar I got at the rebuilding center, but you could use redwood, cedar, or pretty much anything if you’re painting it. Maybe steer clear of maple which is less dimensionally stable. I’m excited for you. A-frames are so cool. Thanks for watching. :)

Pretty amazing craftsmanship. You don't show how you're getting your angled measurements for cutting. I'm assuming you're marking the wood by laying it on the glass. Yes, I'm ignorant of real woodworking, thus the rather dumb question.

Oh thank you. I’m definitely not a carpenter either. So… gosh it’s been a while, but by the time I made the frames I’d measured those angles several times during the build, and most accurately when it came time to order the custom cut glass. So I have a few tools for measuring angles, but mostly I use a digital protractor like this: amzn.to/3V57Da1 (affiliate link) - But I don’t think I was using the glass as a guide, I would have used the cabin itself as a guide, as a final foolproof check, while allowing a little bit of a gap for movement and expansion etc. I hope that helps. It was a nerve wracking project that ended up being less difficult than I was expecting.
