See how to make a simple brass adaptor to enable power feed on compound turning, using cordless screwdriver tools. Shown being made on the Mini Lathe. Plus how to use it on both the Myford ML7 and the Chinese Mini Lathe....No more aching fingers!

We just made a power feed for ours using a high torque 12v motor, reversible momentary switch, and a wall transformer plug running a 1.5:1 ratio from the motor gear box to a gear where the indicator was. Approx $35 and it is simple to run back and forth without the need to have a drill in hand and still retains the manual handle. Pretty slick little setup.

Great video as usual A few years back I bought one of these power screwdrivers useless on wood screws but good for powering the compound after I made adapter as per your video thanks Roger
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 7 лет назад
Hi Roger. Yes they do not have enough torque for anything other than smaller self-tapping wood screws!..... I hope to do a very quick update video on this set-up soon. I have converted a special tool so that the screwdrivers can be used on lathes that have limited RPM spindle speed. I like using the screwdriver method as it still gives a bit of 'feel' to the machining, plus it leaves the lathes in their original state...Thanks for watching....Regards Steve

Hi Steve, love the videos! I've just bought my first lathe (its the chinese import of the Warco 180) and so far to say i've only messed around i'm loving it! I'm a little scared to crank up the RPM and use the lathe as fast as what you do. I video explaining safe working speeds for different operations would be really helpful. After 24 hours in to my amateur machining i've noticed that the metal reacts / cuts / chips or shears in different ways depending on the speed, tool, depth of cut etc. Could you maybe make a video going over what to look out for, whats safe, danger signs, what the correct methods should look like. Cheers, Matt.

It looks as if you are using the same QCTP on both lathes. The draw bar idea to keep the chuck from unscrewing is a winner in anybodies book. My 3 jaw chuck has a flat back I will have to examine it carefully and see if this fine fix can be applied. Thanks

Hi Shaun This is the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1mr3I_8HnJQ.html You can get the vice from RDG website or from their Ebay. You just need to drill two new holes to mount it on a piece of square bar.....I can't remember but I think I explain this in the video. The vice is made of cast iron so its strong but easy to drill if you have a pillar drill. It is one of my most used tools on the lathe. I use it for my tool-post drill, milling ops and for holding bar when using a slitting saw on the lathe. Regards Steve

Hi Steve. I've noticed a lot of people have their compounds set parallel to the ways on these mini lathes. I've been setting mine to about 32 degrees because that's how I set the compound of my machine shop lathe when I was earning my machining degree in college. What is the reason for having the compound parallel to the ways on these mini lathes? Cheers
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 5 лет назад
Hi A lot of people have them set at an angle. It is really just a matter of preference I think. Although there are advantages of setting it at an angle for thread-cutting. I like mine parallel just in case I make and adjustment using the compound for depth. This way the adjustment won't alter the diameter. Regards Steve

The lathe was a Chinese Mini Lathe 7x14". They are sold under various different names. Mine would be unrecognisable to the company I bought it from as I have done so many upgrades. Then bolted it onto a piece of 12mm square bar. This allows it to be positioned in the tool-post. I show this in one of my other videos. Regards steve

Great tip! Think I'd put a blob of plastic paste in the head of it then press it centered on the handle. Remove, let cure 10 minutes, then it would always stay centered and you can concentrate on the work piece more. PS - shop teachers would go ballistic seeing you use your bare hand as a steady rest. One time I got cut pretty good with brass - was about to properly mnt workpiece then rashly thought "its only brass" - as it ripped into my skin the sudden realization that almost any material is 100x togher than my flesh. 😨

Hi Nikola, I'm not familiar with the SC4 compound slide so this is the only toolpost that I know would fit. www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Machines-Accessories/Lathes/SIEG-SC4-Lathe/SIEG-SC4-and-C4-Lathe-Accessories/SC4-Quick-Change-Tool-Post-Set I don't know what the availability of spare holders for the set above is like. The Myford T37 quickchange set, the same as mine, could possibly be used, but it would need modifications, maybe a new centre stud bolt?

@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 5 лет назад
Hi Brad, It can by truing up the tail-stock, but I don't bother these days unless it is really bad. It maybe where the face off was not quite clean. The quill barrel is a bit loose on my mini lathe as well. If I though it would break the centre drill I would just push the tailstock chuck over a bit by hand to centre it up a bit, as I feed it in. This normally stops that.

Watching you doing all those tool changes with the lathe running while wearing a chunky watch and loose cuffs on your sleeves made me scream inside my head (it's late!). Does the concept of safety never enter your bonce? "This depth needs to be about ... " About has nothing to do with machining, That's an engineer's word! ie. "That should be _about_ it, but let's allow a bugger factor of ... " Sloppy use of the 3-jaw chuck by assuming repeatability.That's a no even on short stock! Other than that, the theory and practice is sound, other than the lack of speed/travel control is poor. I might make something along these lines, though. lol

@@SteveJordan Whereas I'm the type that still has all his limbs intact while I've seen others lose way too many. Any swiftly moving/rotating machinery has only one aim in life: To kill you as painfully as possible. The moment you forget that ... Goodnight, Vienna! You may 'know what you're doing', but there are those out there watching your tutorials that will think it's normal to mess around on the vice while it's running. When they are injured will you take responsibility for giving them license to emulate your stupidity? Of course not!
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 4 года назад
I worked in an aerospace factory for 27 years on all different types of machinery. We were given long sleeve overalls as standard wear. Always wore watches as well. In over 40 years engineering no one I knew ever had an accident wearing them and they had open cuffs. It's rings and long hair that are dangerous. Overalls don't get caught on the lathe unless you are down right stupid and lay across the machine or something! Take a look in most factories they all wear overalls with long sleeves. They protect wrists from hot swarf oil etc.
@amanofmanyparts9120
@amanofmanyparts9120 4 года назад
@@SteveJordan Just because some industries are willing to cut corners on worker safety is no excuse to do the same at home. In fact a factory can still be a safe place to have such an accident. At least there, there are others to turn the machine off and carry your fingers for you to the ambulance. In your home workshop you could faint from blood loss before you can tear free and pick up the phone. Obviously you're happy to let tyros in engineering/machining learn your shoddy ways, but now they know that I'm not and should take heed.
