OK, they don't use Whirl, they use "Phase Gold" (formerly Koala Gold). Very similar product, very similar results! Easy to find on AMAZON.

Finally !!! Someone has showed me the real secret of the Waffle House browns !!! It’s all about the WHIRL !! I’ve never heard of it or seen it ! I guess it’s sold at grocery stores ????? I’m gonna be in the hunt for some “whirl” !! Thanks for sharing

I have been trying to find out what kind of oil Waffle House used for years. Ordered some Whirl on Amazon and they were awesome. I think that’s the secret! Thanks.

Whirl is what I THOUGHT they used, in fact it is a similar product called "Phase Gold", formerly called Koala Gold. Pretty much the same result with either one!

Could you just add butter to neutral oil like some chinese restaurants do?

Maybe, I've never tried that. It has been my experience that butter will "burn" at the high temperature you need, and not taste as good as Whirl. Actually, I learned from a Waffle House employee about a year ago they use a similar product called "Phase Gold" (which used to be called Koala Gold). Using Phase Gold or Whirl tastes and behaves exactly the same, so I decided to not redo the video!

that whirl is just soybean oil! family owns restaurants all 4 use soybean oil

At waffle house the hash browns are drained and never rehydrated. What happens if you don't rehydrate the potatoes you use?

My guess is, if you use completely dehydrated hash-brown potatoes, they would be super crunchy, possibly not very good. I've never tried that. What I see them putting on the grill looks like dehydrated hash browns that have been re-hydrated. But I don't work there, maybe some that does can offer a better answer.
