That's not a lathe.. and it's a sap from a tree that hardens like and goes darker as it dries. Similar the Japanese Urushi lacquer.

it looks like a natural tree lacquer, basically a kind of sap thats extremely irritating in its raw form that is treated with different things to affect the colour, then applied and allowed to cure in a large humidor. The result is a very rich and hard wearing finish but its a bit challenging to work with as the irritant is the same thats in poison ivy and green mango sap, so most people are affected by it

@@atekin-mj2gz no, just someone who has worked with tree lacquer and recognizes the techniques and tools related to using it. You wouldnt use a humidor to cure other types of finishes and the method of preparation and application is what you use for natural urushi

The woodturning technique in the video is a traditional oriental method. Western woodturning and Eastern woodturning have their pros and cons.
