Actually they were invented in medieval england where they were used to execute criminals on market days. If the criminal had stolen an animal that animal would be used to execute them.

@@karenfromfinance6498The guillotine actually wasn't made by Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, he just requested it's production (1789) so that people that get sentenced to death don't suffer that much. It was designed by Antoine Louis (ironically a personal doctor for royalty) and firstly called "Louisette", the first person that actually built one was the german piano maker Tobias Schmidt, who at that time lived in Paris. And yes I just watched a nearly two hours long documentary about the history of the guillotine.
