Making Your Own Mealworm Farm 101

We are going to teach you how to grow your own mealworm farm step-by-step.
Mealworms are the larva version of the darkling beetle. They are very high in protein in other nutrients.
Mealworms are also great as a molting supplement for chickens as they use the calcium from their bones to create the eggs. This can obviously take a toll over time and requires sufficient supplementing so your chickens continue their high egg production.
We recommend when feeding your chickens mealworms that you feed them in moderation.

My grandfather once told me that he would watch what insects the free ranging chickens would eat and eventually started to breed flour beetles and other larvae because they could be fed expired feed. Fed an entire family with that.
@gregp4557
@gregp4557 Год назад
You completely skipped that you have to let at least some of the meal worms mature into beetles in order to keep the supply going ( If you just collect all the worms, you need to buy more) Which means your substrate needs to feed the beetles also. And how easy/hard is it to keep the beetles from getting out and running all over your house?

Beetles can fly but as long as They have food they won’t go anywhere. I had a super worm farm which is more work than mealies cuz they will not pupate on their own when they are all together. They need solitude to pupate. Placing each worm in it own container with no food. I used clear tackle boxes and bead boxes.

@@Mrs.NRalphs Lmao yeah I notice one or two little escape artists running around my house. Sometimes they'll be chilling on a random door, or slip and sliding across the stone tiles. But I just gently give them a lift back to the beetle box.

how did they breed if they did not turn into Beatles? Don't you have to buy Beatles to start laying eggs?? And if you don't buy Beatles for an emediate start , didn't he say it takes 3 months for larvae to become adult Beatles? Also if you have 12 chickens they go through about 5 pnds of dried mealworm per month. That means without Beatles your gonna have to wait and pay $135 in mealworm for 3 months.

i breed this before while I'm a keeper of a tarantula and scorpion.. it is so easy to breed mealworms all you need to do is buy them in a pet shop and then find a large bin or aquarium put a substrate like groat oats or quaker oats after they eat the oats it becomes vermic vermicast, then feed them any kinds of vegetables or fruits like apples, if you want to breed them just feed them with vegetables or more liquid fruits and vegetables for 2 weeks after that put them in an individual tiny cups with ventilation holes and and dont give them foods and they will slowly transform into beetle to lay eggs when you have male and female beetle

@sillypetfarm8646
@sillypetfarm8646 2 года назад
Beetles lay eggs and the worms/larvae will eat the eggs resulting in less larvae. And beetles don't live very long and start to smell pretty bad if they aren't cleaned out, so I found it easier in the past to transfer the beetles to a new container every 1-3 months, and leave the bedding alone for the same amount of time to let the eggs hatch. Hope this helps!

For anyone who thinks that mealworm farms are this high maintenance, it’s not. You get a plastic three drawer container put oatmeal and a carrot In the top, oatmeal in the bottom and it doesn’t matter in the middle. Put mealworms in top, pupae In the middle, and beetles in the bottom. They don’t need much shade, leave them in a house and make sure it’s no colder than 60. That’s how I did mine and they thrived. It’s that easy not all this stuff.

Misleading in some parts. Using stock video clips of maggots trying to pass off as young mealworms is deceptive. This makes the rest of the content less trustworthy, even if much effort has been put into making this video. You might trick people who can't tell the difference, but if the intent is to teach people how to grow their won mealworm farm, then you are showing false info. But if you are trying to produce clickbait to feed your own algo, then you have done that.
@thehappychickencoop6460
@thehappychickencoop6460 Год назад
Hey thanks for the feedback. I apologize, it was not my intention. It is difficult to find stock footage of mealworms unless you are currently obviously growing them currently, which I am not. Meant no harm in doing so, was only meant to educate and share what I have learned.
