In researching for how to repair my 2040, I discovered this video. You provided great information that really helped me understand the process of replacing the feed rollers. I also contacted Western Roller Corp, per your example. Looking forward to getting them back, installed, and building. Thanks for taking the time to produce this video!
I was able to follow your video just fine. Thanks for posting it. I recently purchased one that was supposed to already have the rollers replaced and blades sharpened. I paid $950 for it. Hard to find them in my area. Being new to woodworking and not knowing any better, the blades have nicks in them and the rollers sometimes don't grab the wood so I will eventually have to do what you did, but great machine.
Hey, awesome, glad it helped! Before you go out and purchase new rollers, make sure you adjust their tension first. There are some instructions in the Makita 2040 manual you can download by doing a quick google search. If the rollers are actually crumbling it may be time to replace them however. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Did you every require from 110v to 220v? I have the same planer and I recently changed the plug to a 240v and when I turn the machine on while powered by 240v the motor gives a decent flash of light but it continues to run well and plane. Any advice?
whoa ... I have never tried that my friend .. usually when a motor is dual-voltage you change some wiring on the motor itself .. I'm no expert but I believe any type of flashing while turning the machine on is not good .. check the motor wiring diagram (on the motor) or check the manual .. cheers :)
Hey Richard, ya I'm aware .. one of my older videos, needs improving for sure .. the roller exchange is really straight forward on these Makita 2040s though and the manual describes the process really well .. sorry my video didn't help .. cheers Mat
Hey David, I used these guys: www.westernroller.com I'm not sure whether they have any other parts specifically for the planer, but they can certainly recoat the rollers. cheers, Mat
How high do you actually push up the rollers? I just bought one and the one roller is way down on one side versus the other. Can't find any info online :(
You simply put a piece of wood underneath the rollers on top of the table .. then crank the table up until the rollers are supported .. then you can remove the attachment hardware and lower the rollers .. why the two of yours are so different I can only speculate on .. I'm thinking seized spring mechanisms? or a broken spring? You should be able to find parts diagrams online by googling Makita 2040 .. it should give you an idea of how the mechanism is put together .. at least parts-wise .. then start taking apart and see where it's jammed .. good luck!
You know, I don't have enough experience with it yet to fully say yes, but I have been wondering why it wouldn't be adjustable .. they must've thought to compensate for the feed speed with depth of cut ..
Still dizzy from trying to follow that video. Wish you could have taken the time to slow it down and explained what you were doing and included a step or 2 that you evidently skipped filimiing
Yep, I'm aware that video ain't the greatest .. one of my earlier ones .. what are you struggling with? The steps are really straight forward, between the manual and the video there is no magic anywhere .. happy to help if you let me know what you're stuck on ..
This video would have been a lot more helpful if you had explained how to remove and replace the rollers. It's what I came here for and the video is impossible to follow
