Makita needs to consult this man on their next tablesaw. How could a leading company in tools have so many shortcomings in one tablesaw? Was this their first attempt at building tablesaws? That throat plate, Jesus!

I seriously was considering buying this saw and you put me off. To spend $670 and get a saw with so many flaws just does not make sense to me. If I have to sink several hours of extra time and more money to modify, build plates and guards the no. Makita, for the first time I’m giving you a miss and start researching other tables. Thank you for a good video. A big thumbs up from me.

I have had my machine for about 8 years now with medium use. Not a bad machine apart from the irritating issues you have encountered.My Blade insert broke after about a month. I made an alluminium one the same as the original and also a zero clearance one. The t slots is an irritation as well as the sliding table on the left with so much slop that it is useless. Thanks for the idea of the wooden mitre slides. Will do the upgrade as well as make a sled. Nice informative video!

Thankyou, I purchased one of these saws and was instantly very disappointed with the fence and mitre system as you have highlighted in your great videos and resolved. (Certainly pays to look at reviews before making a spur of the moment purchase.) In principle this saw table has a lot of positives and I still think for the price and the fact it can be made to cut accurately with a few relatively simple improvements it is still certainly worth considering. Makita really dropped the ball on the design to ensure accuracy on this unit. I thought your ideas were great and will certainly be doing similar upgrades. Anyone owning one of these machines should at least replace the insert plate as greatly improves safety of using the machine.

One of the best videos I've seen for MLT100. Your fence solution is excellent - I'll be using this method in the future. Just be wary of handling the fence - I accidentally knocked my fence off the table saw surface, and when it fell to the concrete floor the black metal part of the fence locking mechanism cracked in two. The metal is brittle.

Hi Tarlochan! Thank you so much for making this video which is very helpful! This machine from Makita is a very deficient product which doesn't fit to the quality of other Makita products. I had a lot of anger with it. Today I integrated the saw into my big working table and took away many things like both table extensions on the right and the back side, the aluminium fence under the machine, the acrylic fence with steel sheet inside the machine. The play of the rail in the groove I rectified with hammering the iron rail and forging it wider. I still use the cheap flexible fence and will replace it soon with something self-made. So I am interested to your plans. I disassembled the whole machine and greased all turning or sliding parts which helped a lot and made the hight adjusting mechanism easy working. The biggest problem for me is the fact that the aluminum table is very inaccurate and shows a difference in the horizontal measurement of 1.2mm from one to the other side. I can show you my measurements on a photo if you like to know, but I don't know how to add a foto. Another problem for me is the very hard start of the motor which beats very hard to the case. The switch of this machine is a simple on/off-switch and not a softstart-switch which I believed to get. Now I face the problem that the saw blade isn't aligned. So I have to take out the machine from my workbench one more time. You gave me a real punch to solve the next problem with this machine. May I have your email address in order to have some exchange with you? Thank you so much to India! I live in Chiang Mai, Thailand and - by the way - my Thai woman family name is Singhka! See you!
@TarlochanSingh
@TarlochanSingh 3 года назад
Thank You Mr. Rainer for writing your experience in detail, seems you have done a lot with your table saw and I totally agree that the aluminum table is not flat. I too had problem with blade alignment after I disassembled the whole machine and wanted to assemble it back and it took me lot of trial and error to get it back to alignment. Another great video addressing problem's of MTL100. After finding solution to the fence problem, miter was my next worry. You seem to have address it quite simply again. Could you explain the metal part of the miter slide on the wood part(was it fabricated or off shelf part ) The Blade lifting mechanism came such a huge shocking!! which is a major blunder from makita, until now thought only the fence was an issue. Thank you for covering each parts 🙏🏽
@TarlochanSingh
@TarlochanSingh 4 года назад
Thanks for your comments. I fabricated the metal spacer, you can try finding these small pieces in any fabrication/welding store near you, with the same thickness, I then used angle grinder to cut the length and give it the shape, Also you will need to do tapping for the threads, same as original.

thankyou for such an informative video. I am going to buy this saw. (Note; the word for the screw you replaced is Bolt Not Bold. even though it's technically a lead (Pronounced 'leed' not 'led') screw. a bolt is a thing that clamps or fastens things together. I didn't know this until I tried to explain it.) 🙃
@sun57vin
@sun57vin 4 года назад
Thank you for sharing the improvements that can be made to other shortcomings of the MLT100 besides the fence. It never did occur to me about the miter slot size differences until you mentioned it. However the biggest surprise (or disappointment) was about the failure of the blade lifting mechanism. This will become a major issue after prolonged usage of the T/S. It's a pity that Makita is not willing to address this problem specifically by providing parts that can be renewed.
@TarlochanSingh
@TarlochanSingh 4 года назад
Thanks for writing, The Miter slot difference is very slight, you may or may not have it in your machine (not sure if they corrected it later), also it will only matter if you are looking to have precision and a smooth slide.

Thanks for sharing your idea's, the fence I'm defentaly checking out. The problem I have with the saw is that the blad drops in height during cutting. Probably due to fibrations the blade is slowly dropping. I'm working on multple cuts and the height defenatly needs to be the same. Do you know the problem? and how can I solve it?

At the end of the video you show shortly the "extanded slots for increased horizontal blade adjustments". Can you please explane why and how you do this?
@TarlochanSingh
@TarlochanSingh 3 года назад
In my experience, when i disassembled and then reassembled the lifting mechanism from the machine to fix the worn out thread, the blade alignment was out and was not parallel to the fence or the mitre rail opening on the machine surface, So i had to adjust and align the balde from the slots provided (shown in the video at 8':53") , however i realized that the slot width provided for the adjustment was not enough for getting the blade to the required alignment, so i used a slot cutter on my drill machine to open and extend the slots, so i could get more room for adjustment. Hope i have answered you question. Thanks

@TarlochanSingh
@TarlochanSingh 3 года назад
I assume you are asking the size of the shaft used for lifting mechanism. the threaded shaft has a Dia of 13.5 MM and lenght is 156 MM. As you are just buying the machine, you may not face the problem for several years again depending on your usage. (Also i would recommend periodic lubrication of the threads for increased life) Thanks for your comments.

Yes, provided you are ready to make these essential upgrades. This is a contractor portable table saw, good for starters who want to learn and start woodworking and need a machine in a reasonable pricing/budget, but later as you grow you will realize this machine lacks professional quality, that is the reason I had to do these upgrades to make this machine more reliable and accurate for cutting, but if you have the budget and do not want to spend time doing these upgrades, you can look for a professional machine like Sawstop, Powermatic, Felder etc.. Thanks

What an excellent clear and explicit upload, Tarlochan ji. Specially for a seventy four year young KG IV student of the carpentry hobby work. Having converted a circular saw into table saw, I could not make a forty five degree straight cut on 19mm thick ply. The reason for this which I found was the absence of the Raving Knife. So since last many months was considering Dewalt 745, not sure why was impressed by this name. But today having come across your this educational and informative upload, I am seriously considering for MLT100. Not hesitant for tweaking and Tuning new machines.... Have subscribed to your channel. This is sharing knowledge without any reservation. Will be present in all of your uploads. All the best. May God Bless You. Regards rr

Would appreciate your observation/experience: In absence of the Riving knife: is there a tendency of the stock being pulled/draged a bit away from the fence. Especially when bevel cutting at 45 angle. Please.
@TarlochanSingh
@TarlochanSingh 3 года назад
While you push your workpiece against the cutting blade, At the same time if you can also ensure that your workpiece is sliding and guided against your table fence throughout the cutting of your stock (from start to end of cut) you will definitely get straight cut irrespective of Riving Knife presence, To achieve this what I do is, I use two push sticks, one for pushing the workpiece and other for securing the workpiece against the table fence behind the blade or after the cut. Riving Knife is a safety device to prevent kickback of your workpiece. If the above solution does not help, There may be various other factors also which may compromise the straightness of cuts, not sure if i am able to understand your scenario, If you wish drop me your mobile number at faith.tarlochan@gmail.com I will be more than happy to make a video call to understand your situation and help you with a possible solution. Thanks.
@imareare1949
@imareare1949 3 года назад
@@TarlochanSingh Sure. That is correct. It helps if the stock is restricted from flowing/swaying away from blade after the cut...When this was done the face had sever burn only on the face opposite to the fence. This was because the side push may have been not after the cut, but at the point where the stock was yet to leave the blade contact. To do this correctly I have to bend forward which made me nervous and a feeling of fear. Yes, but when I had other person holding the exiting stock pressed against the fence the result was satisfactory......so I came to conclusion that Riving knife will also help in keeping the stock well close to the fence as well it prevents the kickback.... I am working mostly in beveled face of 19mm plywood. My other friends advised me not to work alone for these cutting on table saw. I do take maximum precaution and staying aside-away from the line of the blade in event of the kickback. Physical strength also matters.

Cool video, thanks. Clear and lots of ideas. Have been thinking about purchasing the MLT100 for a while now, but every review reports a similar range of issues and limitations... Now you’ve had it (and modified it), would you recommend it? Thanks again from London :) Sam

This is a contractor portable table saw, good for starters who want to learn and start woodworking and need a machine in a reasonable pricing, but later as you grow you will realize this machine lacks professional quality, that is the reason I had to do these upgrades to make this machine more reliable and accurate for cutting, but if you have the budget and do not want to spent time doing these upgrades, you can look for a professional machine like Sawstop, Powermatic, Felder etc.. Thanks

@@TarlochanSingh Many thanks Tarlochan. That’s kind of what I gathered... I’m not sure I’ll buy one just yet, think instead I’ll make a few more jigs for my circular saw and jigsaw (not the same I know but hey).

Do you perhaps have any ideas on how to lock the up&down movement of the blade. I sometimes find that the blade height drops a little bit while sawing. I have had my Makita MLT100 for a few years now and sometime encounter this problem.
@TarlochanSingh
@TarlochanSingh 3 года назад
I didn't experience this problem so far, Arresting too much vibration in the machine could be one solution, however if you have been using this machine for a while now, I suspect the female threads in the aluminum housing as shown in my 5th upgrade is close to getting worn out, this will result in lesser contact surface between the male and female threads, causing it to slip, otherwise i don't see any other reason for blade dropping. In future once the lifting mechanism completely fails, you can consider replacing the mechanism or add a new steel plate as shown in my 5th upgrade. This will add sufficient friction to keep the blade in place. Hope this helps, Thanks

Great job 👏 is there any chance you could make me one of those bolts and the steal plate?! If yes let me know how much would you charge for it thanks 🙏 great job hope Makita is listening 👂 and learning to.

I live in Bengaluru, India. It would be cheaper for you to make where you live, as shipping the product to a different location may cost more and may not be worth while. Also I have never made one for someone yet, but good idea, If I start doing so, will let you know. Thanks

@@TarlochanSingh Got the saw, weird that my version feels heavier and is also not having any of the "groves" that you have on the table. the plate is also not as flexing as you are showing here, however the plate itself is maybe an mm or so lower than the entire surface.. the only thing is that its plastic body & alumuinium top gets scratched easily!! even with the bar itself if not careful!! but yes I think it definitely needs a new/better fence. have to make a portable table now for her..

@@ajayvishvanathan1991 Is is Makita mlt100 model or Makita 2712 ? The description you are giving of your machine seems to be some other model of Makita table saw.

@@TarlochanSingh no, its the MLT100, august import, not sure where she was made tho, everywhere it says manufactured by Makita Japan. but doesn't say where, only by who. couldn't find the PRC/China stamp anywhere but I did spot a few Chinese characters on the outer box. but nothing other than that. the 2712 wasn't on stock and I wasn't particular on that as well. I was initially inclined towards the Bosch GTS 10J but it was way too expensive. the issue at 2:34 (slider alignment into extension) is present, not sure if they made changes to the blade lift mechanism. she is a beast & I can't lift her. not sure how I see youtubers lifting it like the 20KGs DeWalt/Ryobi saws!!!
