This is top content and should have a million views. So much love for details and a talent for capturing the essence of the place. Thank you so much for the great work you're doing!
Many thanks to you for a great tribute! Appreciate it...a million views would be useful, but the audience I think for this subject is fairly limited in Thailand, so far anyway. There's a lot of rubbish getting a lot of views out there, it's a bizarre phenomenom, this RU-vid algorthythm thing.
I really enjoy your videos of places I know little or nothing about. There's something about these old and decaying urban landscapes. Let's hope this one survives in some form. Thanks for making these videos!
Thanks Andrew, glad you enjoy the channel mate. The more obscure it is, I'm in. There are so many places to get out and walk around in Bangkok. Beats seeing the same old boring stuff!
Wasting time around random sois was my favourite thing to do in bangers when I was there. While I never ventured quite as deep as you did, mate, it was certainly an interesting part of my day. I'd rather fortnightly uploads with lots of interesting stuff over random silent walking through shopping malls twice a week any day of the year. Never change what you do, Pat.
Thanks Rick, I have a duty to roam where others don't go, and it's a habit I've got into. Where else would I go? To Starbucks to tell you all how much a latte costs in USD? Let the vloggers vlog all that...I'd rather risk dirty shoes and attack by a pack of cats. Never had any bad looks down sois, people are as friendly to you are as you are to them. I get a few interesting stories in those sois, the ghost stories are often ridiculous, but I do ask about ghosts so what can I expect....
@@BangkokPat the ghost stories and the random food finds are the best parts of back alley soi trips. One day, if the pricks running Australia let us out again it'll be the first thing I do.
What is the deal with silent walking in malls lately or guys who make videos of their feet while the camera swings wildly with loud crap music? The truth is they do seem to attract many viewers and subscribers. I have thought of trying that myself but am too embarrassed to put it on RU-vid.
@@destinationsroadslesstraveled The silent slow videos with no commentary shouldn't be called vloggers as anyone can do that. Apparently the silent ones show the culture more, so the many comments state anyway. The other end of the scale is the ego walk and talk with a selfie stick videos, telling you what you should do.. I can't do either. My videos don't interest many but that's how YT works.
Always stay on Phetchaburi when visiting Bangkok - the contrast with Sukhumvit couldn't be more stark. It's a welcome relief in my opinion, but as you say no doubt ripe for development. Great to learn some of the history of the area
I love cats and I appreciate you for showing the kitties cats on your video along with Whatever you are showing the sections of the towns or something else.
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoy.....I do like the resrarching because you always find something unexpected and odd. The shooting around that area took about 7 days of 3-4hrs each day so I suppose if I did full days it may take 3 days but I always find things out and have to re-shoot stuff to fit in with other bits so it's an evolving process.
Thanks Terry, I'd love to have a TV series but right now the channel will have to suffice!! I was thinking that if I did, would they give me free reign with the location ideas and content,? If not then I'd merely be a puppet for someone elses ideas...hmmm
Thanks a lot mate. The Clash shot the cover of an album at Makkasan in 1982 while staying at the Bangkok Palace Hotel. I've seen that Seagal movie, pretty poor it is too, but locations were fun to spot, and I believe you're correct, it was shot there. But there's another train graveyard at Bang Sue that I haven't been to (it was off limits last year) could have been there too.
Another good piece Pat. I passed by that area a few times but never gone deep. There is another thing Pat which out of this video subject but related to your channel. Recently I just rewatch another youtuber which I had unsubscribe to his channel. It happened that one of his video appeared in the HOME page in this RU-vid apps, and the place he travelled is one of a place I want to go, so I watched it . And again, I just don’t like his style though the place he shot and recorded was attractive. Then I checked on his subscriber count, wow! It is double, and no, it multiplied by ten times after just few months time. What a joke ! Then I checked back on yours, which is a serious narrator (at least sounded alike serious, enthusiastic), in putting lots of effort searching for informations, historical data, and so on, bit to mention putting bulky of time to edit and compile all the recorded videos jus to make a fine final cut, the count upset me. With a person simply simply make a video, it hits up; but for another person like you, what d upside down! This is a upsidedown world !
I like having a nosey about places, so i'd be doing the same as you! At 1.28 one of those old carriages is a British Rail built class 158 Sprinter unit, several units were built new for the SRT around 1990 time. Nice to see old world Bangkok, i could spend a whole holiday there and leave still wanting more! Have you considered doing a vid on Bangkok airports? They are an integeral part of the growth of tourism in Thailand, i'm sure they'd be interest in such vids apart from aviation enthusiasts like me......
I have to say yours is the best RU-vid channel on Bangkok, I really enjoy your videos and the history of Bangok is fascinating, your narrative is excellent. Have you considered going to Kanchanaburi and doing a story on the bridge over the River Kwai and the Jeath museum. I went there some years ago and was brought to tears with the allied cemetery there, the people keep the cemetery in immaculate condition. Thank you for imparting your knowledge and making such interesting videos.
You are exactly right about the Makkasan Railway is it own By the Thai state railway . As I was saying in the past You have to be from there too To Know all about the area . I'm enjoyed watching and listening the history of the Makkasan Railway station .
Hi! Thanks for the video. I have never seen your videos before. Have you made any of the "other side"? I mean the other side of the Chao Praya River? If not, I think that could be interesting for people that would like to live close to central Bangkok, but that dont like the noice and so on, or cant afford it. Kind regards, Jonas from Sweden
Thanks very much! I've made a pretty long video covering Khlong San district, which is one of my favourites. I will of course be back to do the Tha Phra and Talad Plu areas soon, plus a bit more around Wong Wian Yai, and eventually the plan will be to do the whole city over the next year or two....I've done about 30 videos so far and I'm working as fast as I can!! Glad you found the channel and I hope you like some of the other videos. I'm live streaming for the first time on Sat 24th at 8pm Thai time. Please feel free to join in the chat.
I really appreciate you for showing me My old home town makasan Real way my father does Works at the makkasan Real ways station more than sixty years until he is passed away . About twenty years now . Again I just wanted to Thank you for showing Some of the older roads And the old memories you are a sweet heart. You are an awesome person
Absolutely love your work. So many Thai videos about not touching peoples' heads (is that a US, UK thing?) Love to see the gritty urban landscape, and Bangkok in 1960s and 70s. I recently went into a cemetery on the river near Asiatique - Bangkok Protestant Cemetery. What is interesting is the number of English and other Europeans who were in service of the previous Kings and Protestant apparently included people of the Jewish community. Lots stories could be found in relation to various cemeteries in Bangkok - Protestant, Catholic, Islamic, Chinese, Hindu etc. Various embassies and European Churches have long histories in Bangkok. There is various historical European clubs eg the British club. There is so much to see in Bangkok that tourist vloggers miss, eg the history of the Malaysia hotel etc. Again thanks for providing an alternative to mango and sticky rice.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoy the old urban landscape, now pretty much ignored in its raw glory. Some of the histories of the foreign embassies/clubs/associations are scandalous! I don't really follow any vloggers, tend to get a bit boring to be honest, a couple stand out but as you say, they miss the finer details. I would have loved to be in Bangkok in the 60s & 70s, my dad was and didn't document much of anything on film, plenty of stories he told us as kids! And a few stories he waited until we were adults to tell us as well... If you got time, please join my first live stream this saturday at 8pm Bkk time, would love to hear from you...
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed the video. Hope you find your favourite part of Bangkok in my channel or you can let me know where I could visit to make a video!
Great stuff as always Pat 👍 How about a video of your own history in Bangkok? A trip down memory lane of the places you've stayed, worked, partied, etc that are/aren't there anymore - with some colourful stories thrown in for good measure. Might be fun. Oh and well done on catching the lightning strike at 18:30 💥
Thanks Liam, and that's an interesting idea you mention, but I'd have to leave out certain locations of course (haha) but I may get that together at some point next month. It'll be a lot easier as I know pretty much where I'm heading, rather than a totally new location that takes a few days to familiarise myself with and then decide where and what to shoot. There was also a lightning flash when I was on the footbridge at the end of the Petchaburi Road part!!
TBH BKK Pat stands alone with regards to Thailand vlogs/shows , Always interesting and just as important imo very original + creative output . Thanks Pat .
Thank you Craig, glad you like the videos, I do my best to make every one as different as possible (but the locations change which helps!) and if you're around tomorrow at 8pm I'n doing my first live stream !!
@@BangkokPat omg. par excellence👍 I live in one of those high-rises you can see in the background and you reveal a world unbeknownst to me. You are becoming a national treasure🤣🤣🤣👍
When you gonna do the back alleys of din deAng and thai ipoon sport center along with pracha songkro rd one of the rare area which havent changed much since back in the days
Hi Pat, just a question, in this video around 11.40-50 you see a “wall” of trusses, maybe 50 meters high. I have seen those from the airport raillink every time I gotto bkk.. first thing on anyones mind would be that they are for advertising, but if so they are in really awkward spots. Any idea what they are/ were????
For advertising, they don't really care about neighbouring buildings, they just put these up wherever the land can be leased! It's in a area that's not very pretty at all.
Yeah, there are many. Makkasan definitely, and it's refreshing to see, as this city heads for commercial overdevelopment. It's seen as smart and forward thinking to put these developments up at the expense of history, heritage and beauty. Typical 3rd world mentality unfortunately!
@@BangkokPat I know what you mean. I will definitely have to get there with a camera before things get too much more reduced to rubble. Those trains are just incredible time capsules of technology.
the content is gem, and this is truly helpful video to understand Bangkok. Should have more views. Many vlog about Bangkok around the Utube usually made by tourist who have shallow or limited information due to mainly less research and expertise, clogs the search engines. I trust Pat many times. Pat please made more catching tittle for your video so people will be rushing to your channel.
Thanks but it's difficult to clickbait this kind of content. Many youtube titles are designed to get you to watch from the title and thumbnail, content is secondary, it's just about the clicks for many. But I prefer to put out a quality product.
I lived in bangkok for 5 years work ranging from teaching to owning a shop selling designer handbags ( original but second hand, lv,gucci, prada etc, until the wife of high up thai police decided she liked my idea and one day my life was mysteriously threatened and all my stock seized….ummmm i wonder why????). Anyway i have returned since as a tourist and have got to see so much of the city that i never saw when living there. I have truely fallen properly in love with the city all over again. I made a fortune on tech stocks so no longer work and that helps but if you live there i strongly suggest using your free time to explore atb
24:11 Nope! The opposite, unless Thailand is different. "However, most of western and southern Europe still considers the black cat as , especially if one crosses your path, which is believed to be an omen of misfortune and death."
I enjoy walking the back Soi to my amazement I have found some quite rare cars, some complete and in good condition, not to mention the fine old dwellings, many still in use. I love the place.
I've spent a lot of shooting time around there in the last month, hard to think it'll all change over the next few years. A shame but it's been a long time coming, hopefully there will be a park of some kind.
In 1967 I was only seventeen The year old still remembered very well the good old days My wooden home is near the canals . An Excellent perfect explanation of the area .
Khlong sesame by the makkasan area used to be clear until the Chinese factory started to dump the dirty water into khlang Samsem That is how the water got dark black lots of rice framers Including my family we own Our land and my grandfather it the Rice frames my father Retired from the makkasan railroad stations .
You are doing best videos on bangkok, I have never seem such detailed videos on BKK, I wish and hope that channel gets more and more subs as you honestly deserve it. All the best and keep posting I am loving it.
One thing I really feel bad about and sorry about the animals dogs and cats on The street is all over everywhere I wonder if it belonged to the residential Nearby . I appreciate you for including Dogs and cats on your video.
I remember what down a Soi in Soi Ngam Dupli and noticing a Ferrari in a gated property, as I walked along I noticed another and another and realized it was the back of a Ferrari dealership
I mentioned it on a later Makkasan video (Has Bangkok Lost it's character?) but I should have found that kind of thing out first time, I was kicking myself afterwards. I had actually seen the video of that guy looking for the location of the photo, but that time I wasn't doing RU-vid and had not much interest in those kinds of facts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fGxXoGAYuYc.html
Interesting part of town... must go visit some of these areas one of these days... or not - your videos do a very good job of exploring these neighborhoods that it hardly seems worth the effort as these are so much more informative, plus a miniscule fraction of the effort needed.
The place you think was a night club or a market was actually a cinema called Oscar and after it was a church for a while, protestant if I remember correctly.
Thanks! I'm hoping I should take that as a compliment..just kidding, nice of you to say so. I thought maybe it would make a change from the usual vloggers. I can't do all that selfie personality stuff!
Since I love railways, history and Thailand this was really enjoyable. Brilliant production and research. I had no idea there were old locos and stock decaying there. Hope they will make it a green space and preserve some of the railway history 👍
Thanks a lot, it should be a park but not sure if all of it will be, but much of it is jungle already. The respecting of the heritage and architecture is what's important to many and hopefully the SRT will liten to the people on this as it was originally donated to them in the first place.
Once again, another fine look into Bangkok. Your cinematography is excellent and your love for this city shows in every shot you do. Thank you for sharing that love of your city.
Thank you Jon, I must confess that I prefer the challenge of these more urban, wild areas where nothing is laid out so straight forward as say, Sukhumvit or Siam. You never know what's around the corner, literally, and the animals are always a distraction that get you a few minutes rest! Those dogs on the canal bridge weren't aggressive at all, purely just going through the motions to remind me I was on their patch.
THanks David! I'm a fan of the old architecture because I feel sorry for it, especially when people say how unattractive it is....but what's coming out nowadays is neither innovative or looks interesting. Shame about the ghost turning out like that, I should have let you all believe!!!
pat.. i'm fascinated by your accent.. you sounds like born and bred Londoner.. how come!!!.. just founds your Channel.. haven't had time to look at all your video yet..
I love Paradox! The hit sing is RU DOO RAUN. Keep up the great work. I miss Bangkok so much and feel your channel is the best Bangkok show. It brings a smile to my face.
Wow. That was enjoyable. All I know of this area is the Airport Rail Link hub, I'll have to be sure to explore the surrounding areas next time I'm in Bangkok. I'd heard about the train graveyard, I seem to recall someone mentioning it's been walled off however. I hope the next time I'm in Bangkok it's before the area's changed too much. They had the same idea about making a City Airport Terminal here at KL Sentral - it's there, alright, you CAN check your bags in, and a lot of people use the airport express train (though prices went up drastically a few years back), but I don't think that many people check in at KL Sentral.
I'm thrilled to see the old Neighborhood again. It's just bring back the old memories . As I said you You are a sweet heart Very smart man very detailed of each locations I love to listening to you How's you expanding area each of the location's .
Landed in BKK yesterday. In the car to the hotel I see the blue street sign reading "Makkasan" with lots of rail tracks all around and I start scanning the streets for Pat and cats 😎 Looking forward to bump into you one day 😊
Welcome to Bkk! So glad you thought of me and the cats down at street level as you cruised above in a limo! Who knows when we'll bump into eacother, I wanna organise a subs meet-up sometime!!
You have a knack for good presentation and interesting content. Never boring for people with a genuine love for Thailand. Just now I have subscribed to your channel. I first became aware of you through the Thaiger news channel. anyway, love your work, keep it up. By the way, any chance of a story on Nonthaburi or Pak Kret?
Nice, but small indonesian neighborhood of reasonably well kept wooden houses in soi Aram Si between phaya thai and ratchatewi bts west of phayathai rd. Good but small night/street food scene. The world's most sour tomyumgung at Pee Aor
In 1983 I used to live in the end of soi ‘Moh Ling’ at that time there were no elevated roads and used to enjoy in late evening with locals to spend time on a small canoe row on the big pond of Makasan. Loved the place, 40 years later I sometime go back to say hello of some of the residents around Makassan.
I had read somewhere that Makkasan was one of the targets of Allied bombing in WWII, as the Japanese were using the Thai railway system and this was the hub. Do you have any information on this? With the heritage buildings still standing, looks like they didn't do much damage. Love your videos. Still have a lot to catch up with.
Hi Pat…recent subscriber…find your videos well thought out with obvious research and as I visit Makassar yearly, I found the connection with Sulawesi interesting…not as serious a history person as you, but appreciate the knowledge that you freely share…as I am not a pub crawler and visit similar kinds of places like you do, it would be interesting to meet up sometime in Bangkok…Coffee on me…
Alot to unpack here! Not so much an opinion as much as an admission of a lack of understanding on my part but it has occurred to me that in thai culture, once a thing is built, that's it, until you tear it down. In other words, I'm not sure the concept of maintenance is well developed in Thailand which would explain the constant plowing usunder of urban decay to put up a shopping venue of some description. All this to say that I love the old teak houses and wish some effort was put in towards restoration. Additionally, all that decrepit 60's art decco is prime real estate to convert into artist lofts. Anyhow love the content!
Thanks Ian. That sounds odd because there are quite a few photos taken there and obviously they were given access. Shows how selective they can be, or maybe they weren't in the mood that day!
Thanks a lot, glad you liked it. There aren't that many old maps but I do have a couple from the 1950s and 60s showing the old tramlines and railways. If you've got an email, let me know and you're welcome to have a copy!

Thanks mate, I did it on a smaller scale to those guys, they had a huge appetite for it, always out walking streets at night and on the tubes all day. Had a few adventures with writers we met from other parts of London, often you'd meet them at Moorgate or Covent Garden and spend the day with them on the tube, then often you'd never meet them again. A lot of characters met with one interest in mind, I felt there were a lot of guys wanting to express themselves in many ways. I got a real kick out of it, the scares, the escaping from police and of course arrest, but as I was under 16 it didn't stay on any criminal record.
Hurry up Peter, they've just closed the cycle track to build the new rail terminal!but they were doing that anyway. It's the mall and commercial crap we don't need. Green space is a MUST, there's nowhere left that size in Bkk
I was a teacher in China for a few years. I ate breakfast in the cafeteria every morning. Then I had a vacation in Bangkok. I arrived in the middle of the night and woke up a couple of hours later. I walked out and got bacon and eggs. I walked a hundred yards and got bacon and eggs again from somewhere else.
Thanks Buster, great to hear from you, I prefer those kinds of areas, more unpredictable and adventurous and you can't get lost with Google. Not the most upmarket area but more character!! PS. just noticed the pool is still open!!
