Who on their right mind would plagiarize something as popular? isn't plagiarism the first thing taught to avoid in university? Even if uneducated, there are many relevant examples of what happens when you plagiarize. I guess laziness can really overcome the potential risks.

If you think about it, it makes sense that the Japanese aren’t too miffed about this. What do they lose economically? Nothing. Because if you want to watch the movie, this commercial certainly won’t take away any viewers. And it makes some sense for the Koreans to be angry. That’s just how South Korea is. They have been copying a lot of things in the world. I mean look at the Korean dramas, they wanted to be like how the Japanese drama were and so they copied them and added a little bit of fan service with the Korean version of the drama and voila they surpassed Japanese dramas in general. If it wasn’t for the Japanese template for drama, anime, music, and manga, Koreans will not be able to move forward in those fields. Same thing with other copies of stuff by the Koreans. Cars, ships, planes, movies from hollywood, cultures. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t blame them. Koreans wanted all the good things in the world like the rest of us does. And they needed it in order for their nation to survive especially with the North constantly trying to run them over. They needed to grow their economy and increase their GDP. So I don’t blame them for being copycats. But, they need to give credits when they are due. People need to remember that Korean drama and kpop maybe so popular now but they are just a modified version of the Japanese’.

Korea always copied Japan. If u watch their Kdrama, all of them copied from Jdrama. And many KDrama is remake or based on Japan manga or anime. I know that, bcoz I'm an anime fans. I can list all KDrama who is they copy from Anime/Jdrama, all of them is copy. Just KDrama fans couldnt accept this!

I think this is absolutely shameful and really awful and I am really glad that they apologized. I can't wait for the new movie, though!!!!!! His work was some of the first anime I ever saw when I was first getting into the medium in general so his work is really special to me!

Even the art style is similar. Makoto Shinkai's art is super distinct so it's very amusing how they thought they could get away with it. Well at least they apologized.

Korea is actually pretty known inside the country to sell intellectual property without consent. For example, Cosmetic doctors in Korea will use celebrities faces to show the end result of their work. It's pretty much annoying to deal with so most of the time its just best to ignore it since its too much time, effort and money to even deal with it.

Why would they think plagiarizing in this big of an audience is a good idea? Maybe there are other films that were plagiarized prior and no one found out, so they thought they could try to copy it too.

Perhaps this is something that should be further looked into. Awhile back South Korea released a concept image for their next generation domestic Jet Fighter that was just an edited screenshot from the game "Ace Combat 6" (also a Japanese production). In the original screenshot, American-made F-16s are present (a plane the S. Korean air force actually uses btw), and all they did was Swap them out for their fighter concept.

Before anyone writes hate comments about Korea, the Justice party, liberals (the Justice party is a very leftist liberal party), or Japan, I'll mention the gistoric background behind why Korea copies Japanese media. Korea didn't allow any Japanese media to be shown, sold, or distributed before the 1990s, mainly because of the trauma of Japanese occupation of Korea of the early half of the 20th century. Reasons and historical grudges aside, Japan led the comic, animation, and gaming industry alongside with the US, but Korea, being under military dictatorship, which censored comic books and animations, simply didn't have the creative resource to make content as competitive as Japan's. So appeared smuggled or pirated mangas, copycats of famous Japanese cartoons, and cheap ripoffs. These (mostly illegal) contents influenced Korean subculture greatly, hence making Korean cartoons visually similar to Japan's. After the cultural opening though, all the Japanese content that were just tied outside the cultural barrier, flooded in, making Koreans avaliable to leagally enjoy and learn about Japanese content. However, old habits die hard. Some of the generations who spent their teen~young adult periods under dictatorship (who are now in their 30s to 40s now), still have their habit to replicate, and copy works of Japan. I'm not saying in general, and it is a fact that most of the artists of that age developed thir own artstyle and made their independent content, thanks to Japanese predecessors, and a new, truly freer Korea. However, when under a strict deadline, or when forced too much, or when the creator is simply morally flawed or downright lazy, unfourtuate incidents such as this one occurs, a lot. People who work in the animation industry are poorly treated here, so they sometimes resort on cheap ways like copying, or tracing. I am not here to advocate nor blatantly spew hate upon, the Justice party , the Korean artist, or Koreans in general, since plagiarism must be frowned upon, on any occasion. I am just here to tell you why incidents of Korean artists copying Japanese content is still prevalent.

Even though it is similar, ever since I saw this ad, I desperately (and still do) wish they’d turn the crossroads ad to a real animated film. And yes, I know I can just go watch “you’re Name”, but still, I really hope one day whoever made this ad realizes how many people like me who’ve watched the ad would absolutely love to see it become a real full length anime film 😏👍🏻

Correction to the ending- Cross Road will NOT come out as a separate film to Your Name, Your Name in fact was actually the alternative movie that came out INSTEAD of Cross Road. Cross Road was more or less a brainstorm idea and as changes were made it slowly became Your Name.

I'm going to be honest. As a person from Korean descent I can't help but to feel a bit hurt by these comments. I've seen a lot of racist remarks the more I scrolled down further, and frankly? I almost cried. I'm ashamed to be a Korean if this is how most people view us. I know I should have no reason to be crying. We do many things wrong and it's the internet, I knew what to expect. I understand copying is terrible. What this Korean company has done is completely unacceptable. I know I can't speak for everyone, but please don't think we're all bad people.

Wow. This is wrong for those PEOPLE. To plagerize. Don't generalize them to all Koreans. This is 100% their fault. BUT to those who are commenting that Koreans have no right to be influenced and take inspiration from these artists are ignorant of history. According to an article from Colombia State University, Korea was harshly ruled by Japan from 1910 to 1945. "For the first ten years Japan ruled directly through the military, and any Korean dissent was ruthlessly crushed." With very limited freedom of expression Japan played a big role in Koreas culture. Korea did not ask for it, it was forcefully pushed onto them. So when you say Korea shouldn't use ideas from Japan's culture, think again and look at the facts, not your ignorance.
