I get a lot of questions about the correct takeaway and where the club needs to go to use the momentum of the club to get on the correct swing plane.
I see three ways that can be successful. Try them all. See what works best for you.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

I've had the issue of an early inside takeaway and as a result, trouble fighting a slight over the top downswing. By not understanding the actual issue, I was putting additional movements into my swing to get the club more "shallow". This video, and others you've made, explaining the momentum of the club in the back swing, and the compensating "feel" in the downswing has really simplified and made my swing much more consistent. Thank you.

This was so helpful. Went to range today and compared them. Helped me become more club face aware. I loved watching Snead and then Lietzke.

Thanks Mike, I’ve been playing golf for 30 years and trying to fix my pushes and pull hooks on the driver. Saw a video about OTT swing and wondered why this wasn’t taught more. I tried that swing, it helped, but felt I was creating more energy to bring it back on plane. I appreciate your videos, and wish I could get a lesson from you one day.

Great video Mike. If this simple 7-minute video was available for golfers to see for the last 30 yrs, it would have helped millions understand the swing. Being both a tennis & hockey player and a viewer of your videos for the last 2 years, I made the switch to this much easier looping forehand with more closed tennis/hockey face and it has completely transformed my game - to the point that I actually practice Matt Wolfe's extreme example of this looping swing in my warmup to groove my swing thoughts.

I'll always be a poor golfer, but you, sir, helped me to be less terrible at it ! I don't get how you don't have a million views on those kind of videos where you make so simple understanding what the golf tasks really are, and how to get there.. I am still really far from there, but thanks to you a lot less ! Merci Mr Malaska, from northwest of France. You seemed to be the only one really helping the average struggling golfer understanding what they have to do, how and most importantly WHY !

Good explanation, Mike. Nearly all the old guys (Vardon, Hagen, Jones, Locke, Cotton) took the club well inside. This seemed to change around Hogan and Snead time with the "one piece takeaway" though, as you say, Snead had a slight ott move with his hands.

This was a helpful video for me. I've always had an outside/over plane take away but drop back on plane for my downswing. As a result, my ball flight has always been right to left/straight, but my inconsistencies come from taking it too far outside making it harder to always drop it back on plane consistently. I've worked over the years to be mildly over plane. The last instructor I saw said it was fine because it led to me automatically shallowing the club in transition. I kept thinking I needed to get it perfectly on plane, but it sounds this takeaway is acceptable.

I think it would be great if you did a video about where your hands should be in relation to the ball when you address the ball. I see some players with hands more forward of the ball and some with hands more even with the ball. With the stronger grip you teach I feel I have to have my hands more forward of the ball to not have a tense and uncomfortable left arm for a right handed golfer.

Hi Mike, Been struggling all year. Been a battle. Watched this Video this morning, realized my shaft plane went through my pelvis. I adjusted it to go through my abdomen (aprox T 12 like you) and took it to the practice Tee. Life changing, hit every ball high and straight. Killed my driver. Mid Irons dead straight, bad ones maybe 10 yard spray. Thank you so much. Do you have any teachers in Indiana or close to Chicago?

I recently tried medthod 3 with great results. I think the reason is that my hands end up in the perfect position at the top of my back swing. every time. With any other take a way I did not know if my hands were right or not at the top of the swing. As long as the turn is done correctly there is no over the top issues.

Love it. I thought my swing was handicapped, but I'm Hale Irwin, LOL. Except that my face tends to stay a bit too closed. I'm working to get it a bit steeper which gives me a better width feeling and speed, does that make sense?

Now I understand why my 'natural' swing used to be 'over the top'. I used to do a lot of wood chopping when I was young, before I took up golf.

I understand that, but the takeaway itself needs more explanation. I've been caddying at an Asian tour tournament over here in England and the two of the guys who've been out practising seem to start their takeaway with wrists cocking almost 90 degrees but with the clubhead outside the hands. It's so confusing, I get the feeling that if you can get the takeaway right putting the club on plane the rest of the swing falls into place but no one seems to explain in detail the correct takeaway. Still a good video this summarising the three ways to take the club back.

Mike, your set up with the hockey stick looks very similar to single plane golf which is what I have been playing for 27 years.

Mike how does the starting outside to a little inside work with standing the club up? If you are shallowing the club how do you stand it up?? Thank you!

Bobby Jones went inside on the back swing yes?! Hogan as well. But Matthew Wolff goes out. What shall I do, I can hit both ways. Looking for the most consistent one for sure. 👏

Very few (one is Jim McClean) are discussing the “under then over” swing plane…for some it’s easier..

Hi, having your hands at that position (~1 min 30 second mark of the video), would that require having a greater lie angle in your irons?

Would what you teach be considered a square to square move? I was a good junior player but never got in to swing a concepts i was all feel. I found this type of move on my own last year and even though i'm a semi butcher (8 handicap) i've been able to really hit some good shots.
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil 3 года назад
you can do each of these 3 swing types and chose to open the face by rolling your forearms open, keeping the face square to your spine (what you call square to square), and 3rd, also add further face shut angles (like Keopka, Morikawa & Hovland) - the out/up/in or on-plane or in/up/out are completely independent to face control - but they can be correlated

Can't players do any option they feel? Couldn't you be successful swinging on plane? Under to over? And over to under? Aren't all those highly functional? Aren't there players that do that on every tour Within reason?

Tip out but still shallow, I’m going to loose sleep trying to picture that. Not that it can’t be done, I just can’t wrap my head around it.
@billymac29
@billymac29 2 года назад
@@Jackybug the slight rotation of your arms at the start of the downswing is what gives the feeling of "standing the club up" or "tipping the club out". You can shallow your arms while still rotating them. If, however, you use your shoulders to "tip the club", then your gonna be steep every time.
