Malaska Golf // Shallowing in Transition - Debate: How to Get The Golf Club in Position

Earlier this spring, Eric Cogorno came out to Superstition Mountain for the afternoon. We covered several topics, but this one seems to get the most debate. The question is, "How do you get your club in the correct position in your down swing?" There's a lot of talk about shallowing the club and rotating through the ball. For those who know my teaching, you know that I have a little different perspective on the natural forces at play and how you redirect the momentum of the golf club as you transition in your down swing.
We covered a lot of ground on this one.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

Good grief, someone who actually listens to Mike and doesn’t feel he has to be constantly interrupting to make HIS presence felt. Well done Eric, great video as always Mike.

You don't think in tennis because you are reacting to a ball. In golf you have been conditioned to react with body positions instead of to the ball. Cogorno is everything WRONG with modern teaching. People can't learn to play golf by hitting positions and remembering feels. Golf has to be a reaction to a task.

Mr. Malaska, I recently started playing again after a 25 year hiatus to due military service and raising kids. I have spent countless hours watching instructional videos trying to improve my game with mostly negative results. I was close to quitting again, but then I found your no nonsense approach to golf instruction. Thank you for "allowing" me to feel like an athlete again and not a robot. I love your candor. I wish I knew you back in the day. Thanks for being awesome.

Way too complicated

I really don’t like Mikes analysis of body position and changes of momentum. The biggest problem of most amateurs is that they fail to complete the backswing before they begin the transition.

I guess only 2% of golfers ever have to worry about coming in under that 45 degree plane---caused by too much (or too explosive) lower body/hip rotation (ie getting "stuck") which shallows the club too much. 98% are "over the top" with very static lower body/hip clearing action. Mentioning these terms to your average recreational golfer just hoping to have fun and maybe break 90 will probably just be a waste of breath. But then again, this is the RU-vid era. Maybe someone could comprehend basic swing mechanics and fundamentals. And want to talk about these things or maybe share their "swing thoughts."

This is the greatest 15 minute golf instruction video I’ve ever seen

If the golf ball was being rolled slowly towards us before we hit it, we would instinctively do the perfect transition. The ball is stationery, thus calling all the wrong emotions and thoughts into play.

Anyone click "like" before even watching the video, you know it's going to be good.

After searching for "right elbow get stuck in the back swing" and got me here, OMG, this is going to change my entire concept of transition. Thank you Mike.

70 years old, at 45 I was a plus 4 - this is the best instruction I have ever seen in explaining, more importantly teaching golf as a sport relating to other sports. Thank you for all you do for the game. Now just get the pros to play faster and the game will grow.

I wish I could spend a day working with Mike, or maybe a week. This guy is a genius.

This was a revelation for me. I’ve been working on being more natural in my movements. But my chronically late transition literally handcuffs my swing into off-balance manipulation rather than swinging. Brilliant video

It’s called the concept of conservation of momentum. You need to stay centered; if something goes back something must go forward. Love ya Mike!
