Lake Malawi is renowned for its fish stocks but none more so than the huge number of diminutive but beautiful Cichlids. These brightly coloured little fish teem in certain areas and I was off to Thumbi (West Island) in a speed boat to hopefully swim with them and capture some video footage to boot. I wasn't disappointed these little fish were a riot of colour. As a bonus, enroute the skipper enticed fish eagles to feed by throwing fish into the water near the boat. They graciously obliged swooping in and grabbing the fish in their talons. We snorkelled in two areas and even wading into the shallows off a sandy beach, hundreds of cichlids were to be seen. The sandy beaches were amazing and so safe to swim and explore. We returned to Pumulani Lodge for a picnic lunch on board the dhow, and returned to feed the fish eagles once more.
