Yeah. Imagine if you, a Malaysian, went overseas & got charged double to visit the local zoo & tourist attractions because you are a Malaysian. You'd be screaming "racism." Well, that's what the Malaysian government does to tourists. As for encouraging mm2h retirees to buy homes in Malaysia & then deny them reentry to their own homes, that's just plain dishonest. On the contrary, the RM1mil to RM2mil limit on what the foreigners are eligible to buy is designed to discourage such practice. If you are wary or simply cannot afford to take on some risks such as being denied entry, bank collapse, social chaos, the chances of which are quite remote by the way, may i be so bold as to suggest that you stay where you are ?

It's like being a tenant, at the end of the day, you might need to go where you came from, even if you had spent many years there. How do people deal with this issue/challenge?

@lonewalker1595 Asian countries mostly do not allow dual citizenship and seldom provide citizenship. Foreigners can still enjoy the environment and low cost of living for a few years. At this moment in time the tourism ministry wanted to re-register agents. It can be a disadvantage because each agent has clientelle, I do not know what will happen if no license is given. Their business will be affected. This minister may want to streamline charges but it also can cause disruption to business. You still have expenses each month even when you go back to your own country, but countries in South east asia are cheaper. Obviously with mm2h, you need to invest. That is the purpose. You may want to study other types of visa eg education, work, investor etc etc.

If you are doing business, good luck doing business there because everything is so corrupt. Foreign investors avoid The Philippines for a reason. FDI will much rather go to Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand & recently even Indonesia has increasingly become popular. The Philippines is stil unpopular among investors to this day eventhough they have one of the best English language proficiency in Asia, second only to Singapore. So the fact that they can speak good English and FDI is still low for decades, speaks volume of how terrible the corruption & bureaucracy is over there.

That's what you'd like to think. It's a half-truth! You always have much to worry about when you deposit with a bank. Malaysian Banks offer deposit insurance of up to RM 250,000. Please also consider inflation and depreciation of the local currency, and you'll see that you are looking at a much smaller annual return than you anticipated initially. Good luck trying to profit by depositing money into a local bank account. MM2H comes with a HIGH opportunity cost. There's a chance that Malaysia will get out of line again, prohibiting long-term social visit pass holders (MM2H holders) from entering the country. It might be an option if you have some good cash flow from your business or employment, savings, and assets, and you can afford to have hundreds of thousands locked up for years or more than a decade. This is all about your net worth, and under no circumstances should anyone consider locking up the majority of their money in Malaysia - DON'T DO IT! You shouldn't risk more than 20% of your net worth for a social visit pass.

Considering the selection of local and international banks the risk is no more than any country where you bank cash. Saying you should not “risk” more than 20% is a good balanced view but understand that cash in Malaysia carry similar risk to most other countries. The currency risk factor only holds true if you not planning to spend time and money in the country and then the real question should rather be if you doing this for the right reasons. Why should any country give you a free pass.

Maybe I haven't read enough but I don't think there is a single country that allows you to do that. What do u expect to keep your money in the stock market or real estate? Sounds more risky to me. Like it or not you must save some money in the bank. As far as banks collapse and all, Bank Negara is known to be among the most strictest central banks in the world. Malaysian banks have healthy lending practice. Ever since the 1998 crisis Bank Negara has been very strict on lending practices. I am not saying that Malaysia could never have a banking crisis, we might in the future. But then again you can't single out Malaysia as if this case is unique to Malaysia only. Banking crises happen all over the world & comparatively speaking Malaysian banks are very solid. As far as interest & inflation is concerned it is not like there is any country in the world where you can expect to park your money in a bank and expect the interest will cover the inflation, not right now at least. What are people supposed to do, keep their money under the bed or something? Plus u can't just say better to go to this country instead of Malaysia without looking at the value that Malaysia can provide vs the other country you mention. While I am not denying corruption exists in Malaysia, the judicial system is still relatively speaking, very sound to a large extent. We also have bigger networking, much better infrastructure compared to the Philippines & Mexico and if you are young and you want to do business. Malaysia would be a much better place to do business. If you are over 50 looking for a nice retirement place you want to find a place where medical care is top notch and Malaysia has good healthcare for global standards. There are also things like crimes that you have to consider. In Mexico the homicide rate is 4 times higher than the US and I already think the US is a very dangerous country to live in, let alone living in Mexico. If you are a foreigner and they know you have a lot of money, is it really safe to live there? In Malaysia the homicide rate is 9x lower than the US, its also lower than countries like Taiwan, Germany, UK, Canada, etc. So maybe u pay a little bit more but you received a much2 better quality of life.

I'm outta here, David... The locals clearly do NOT want foreigners to integrate and obtain real residency with path to citizenship. The proof is in the pudding. Many believe that MM2H is a residence permit (they don't know anything)😂 Most don't know anything about laws and requirements. This is one of the least receptive regions of the 21st century.

There really isn't any anti foreigner sentiment here. Like literally, no voters cares if expats come here. We welcome you, at least for now. The thing is, Malaysia is no longer a poor country in which we are willing to do anything just for the sake of getting more capital without any productivity boost. If we want to let people come in, at least let them be high quality expats that can boost productivity, provide expertise, add value, etc. I think it's normal, once your country reaches a certain level of development they would want to be more selective of the people they let in. However I don't think the government anticipated application would drop by that much. Which prompted the new government to reduce requirements a little bit.
