Yes it was called Malaya until Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah joined Malaya and the new nation was called Malaysia in 1963. However Singapore became an independent nation two years later in 1965.

Singapore especially Lee Kuan Yew called for equality for all citizens or Malaysian Malaysia... But, Malays insist to accept the concept because afraid of the fate of Malay people which at that time most are poor and do not afford to have proper education, jobs, etc...

I was born, raised and living in Borneo Isle (Sarawak), watching your reaction video together with this footage for the first time makes me yearn to travel back to Peninsula (which we would have back in May, for annual family vacation but got cancelled due to the pandemic).
I used to fly over on the way to Sibu. Never been to Sarawak but....there was a ww2 runway (I think made from steel grates) very near you. I was always intrigued by Sarawak.

If you notice that the tallest building in the country called PNB 118(still under construction), the building is actually resembling the shape of our 1st Prime Minister named Tengku Abdul Rahman, who was standing and proclaiming the "MERDEKA for 7 times" when he raised his hand(as pinnacle pole of the building itself). 😝.
