Personally not a big fan of increasing tax. But I do believe we need to reintroduce GST but at the same time we need to cut down on civil service and bureaucracy to reduce spending. We have so many unnecessary government agencies like LPPKN, FINAS, BERNAS, SUHAKAM, and JAKIM. To bring investors, we need to reduce the corporate income tax rate as well.

A 60% debt to GDP mostly owed to its own citizens is NOT a big deal, when Malaysia has consistent Export over Import and building enough Foreign Reserve in International Trade. Malaysia is essentially an Export Economy of raw materials, finished IT goods, rubber etc. It has no regressive GST which is good for poor and middle class consumption. Recently, Malaysia's Court System showed enormous guts to find the very powerful UMNO political figure, the former PM Najib Rasak guilty and put him into 12 year prison, which brings enormous confidence among the FDIs and FIIs who come to Malaysia believing in the Neutrality and Honesty of the Court System to uphold all the Civil and Business Laws in the country. In total, Malaysia is doing just fine. Petronas is a big contributor/dividends to the Government & is projected to be around RM50 billion (USD 12 billion)in 2022 coupled with windfall taxes, huge current account surplus, Malaysia’s current debt level is manageable. Selepas itu, kita buat bidaan. Para pelabur akan membuat bidaan kadar pulangan atau hasil serta jumlah yang ingin dilanggan. Yes, Malaysian government only borrow money for development expenditures. Operating expenditure meanwhile is funded by revenue not borrowing. As for you question where does all the money goes I dont have a definitve answer. The answer may partially be explained by legal limit of borrowing by Govt. Government Funding Act 1983 specify limitation of borrowing by Govt to be at 55% of GDP. Govt is only permitted to borrow up to 55% of GDP. Breaching it would be illegal on Govt part and any excess maybe slashed to be under 55% rule. This is to enforce financial prudency on Govt and maintain sustainability. Perhaps multiple projects by Govt might be stalled due the cost added to the borrowing amount reaching 55% legal limit. However this does not exclude the possibilities of corruption and mismanagement in the projects.
@3mKay

the problem with increasing tax rate and reintroducing GST is simply the trust deficit the government is suffering from. We simply do not see the benefit of our taxes in our every day lives and we know we have one of the most bloated civil service in the world. We do not trust the government to make good use of the money and their implementation of new taxes. The government need to be more efficient and effective with what they have right now until they can earn back the trust.

Not sure what to make out of this video. 60% debt to GDP is not high (granted) but only compared to high income nations who can service their debt. The issue is 18% on government budget used to service the debt which is very concerning and has to go down. Is increased tax a solution ? On paper yes, but it will put more strain onto the rakiat. This combined with the high inflation rate we are seeing at the moment does not seem to be the right (popular/political) answer. What about the issue of Sabah, where the arbitration court in France demands Malaysia to pay US$ 14.92 B and a possible turn over of Sabah to the Philippines. We all know Sabah contributes to the economy substantially. Do you think this will affect the debt to GDP ratio?

Any pro Sulu or PH claims on North Borneo, their primal source of reference will be the Sulu and British North Borneo Company (BNBC) agreement dated 22 January 1878. In this agreement, Sulu “lease” North Borneo to BNBC (Tausug version - missing during his majesty trip to Singapore) while the English version is “grant and cede”. This information will easily be cherry picked in any of their discussion or debate. But what they will not revealed are those that can refute their claim. The followings are few of the information that had been kept secret: Firstly, the agreement between Sultan Brunei that grant and cede North Borneo to BNBC on 29 December 1877 which is 3 weeks earlier than the agreement between Sultan Sulu and BNBC (22 January 1878). This will deny that North Borneo was a gift to Sulu from Brunei. Secondly, on 22nd July 1878, Sultan Sulu relinquished his sovereignty on Sulu Archipelago and its dependencies thereof to Spain (Bases of Peace and Capitulation agreement). Thirdly, on the same day, 22 July 1878, Sultan Sulu wrote to Governor General of Philippines and Governor of Sulu terminating the 22/1/1878 agreement between Sulu Sultanate and BNBC. Thus, the agreement is null and void. Fourthly, on 24th July 1878, Governor of Sulu wrote to BNBC concerning the Spanish sovereignty on Sulu and its dependencies including North Borneo and the termination of the 1878 agreement. Fifthly, Governor General of Philippines wrote a letter on the same matter dated 20th August 1878 to the Spanish Government in Madrid. Sixthly, finally, the issues on the agreement between Sultan Sulu and BNBC and the status of North Borneo was settled through the Madrid Protocol (7th March 1885). North Borneo belongs to the British under this Protocol. The above documents are kept either in Public Record Office in London or General Archives in Madrid. It can also be accessible from the Philippines official website with Spanish to English translation. In addition, during the US colonization of PH, 2 agreements (Bates 1899 and Carpenter 1915) were signed by the Sultanate of Sulu which relinquished its temporal sovereignty of Sulu and its dependencies. Later, the 1930 Anglo-US border agreement acknowledge the boundary delimitation between PH and North Borneo that belongs to the British. Rebut my comment with facts and references. Not hearsay.

No, it was one of the best tax schemes Malaysia had BUT it was during a time of uncertainty. How would Malaysians feel at that time not knowing where the money collected from GST would go to? Would a portion of it go into our PM’s bank account or would it go back to the people? GST is of course not perfect but it was a scheme which should have been implemented a long time ago

Hi, I’m one of the locals, born and raised in Malaysia. The true story is that Malaysia could be stronger than ever. However, the high debt was caused by too much corruptions in & out of the governments. Most professional careers were underpaid because of that corruption. And now the locals with brain are expected to emigrate for better opportunities. The high profile case 1MDB, Jho Low and Panama Papers were just the tip of many corruptions. And you should wonder why this country with muslim majority have too much corruptions.

this video is just too sunshine and roses. malaysia's debt wasn't a problem (note: past tense). for a country to strive, it needs 1) good governance 2) support of the people and 3) talents. Malaysia has only 2 of these. Yeah the bumis still support the country but the real pillars (minorities) have mostly given up. What's left? good governance? nope. talents? most of them left for greener pastures. so in the end what's left? a country with bad governance, lack of talents, lost of it's true support pillars and a mountain of self generated debts.
