Watch these two foreigners in their first Malaysian kampung experience! What a big change from Kuala Lumpur, and the city life of Malaysia! Abang Ajib first took us to Port Dickson to see the beach there. But the weather wasn't appropriate, so instead we road tripped and hit some local warung for: roti, chapati, dosa, tapai (tape), dodol, wajib, salai, masak chili apee.
We also saw some traditional malaysian houses: rumah limas and rumah minangkabau.
We also checked out the upside down gallery! What a blast. Here's it's info:
71050 Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan
Our breakfast was at Tok Mah Lihut, located at:
Kampung Pasir Putih Bt 8 Labu, Seremban 70200 Malaysia
And for late lunch / early dinner we were at Washih Salai, located at:
No 38, Kampung Kundur Tengah, 71400 Pedas, Negeri Sembilan
Special thanks to Abang Ajib!
Thanks for watching!

My best friends happens to be Malays. Though my wife is Chinese, I always used to get along with Malays best. My best times were staying in my parents Malay friend's Kampung house (on stilts) doing all kind of things...like chasing chickens and ducks when young and constantly getting into trouble ;)

Nismilan: Kodai Tok Mat Lihut tu memang sodap. Kek Jalan Labu tu ado Cendol Sagu jugak. Ado masuk Majalah 3 dulu. Sodap bilo dapek minam time paneh. Ponganan tu pun samo sodap. English: The Tok Mat Lihut eating place is 'the place' to eat roti canai, chapati & thosai in Labu. Along that road also is where you can find Sago Cendol. That cendol stall was once featured in a documentary on Malaysian TV3. Really refreshing to drink during hot afternoons. Dodol Cair in the Negeri Sembilan dialect is called Ponganan. Love the chewy sweet caramelly taste. Wajid is also tasty as well with an interesting texture. Anyway, thank you for visiting my state of Negeri Sembilan. If only I know that you're here in Seremban... sobs.

Wow! Another thing worth mentioning: the owner of Tok Mat Lihut is a really genuine and awesome guy. He didn't want to be on camera too much, as he said his English was not good (even though his English is quite good!) but he went out of his way to help us out, talk to us, and joke around with us. What a great experience at Tok Mat Lihut!! Also, we didn't know we would be in Seremban either, sorry lol! Ajib was insisting to surprise us.

"Dosa" in Malay means "sins". 😂 We tend to spell it as "thosa"/"thosai" to - sort of - differentiate it from the other. 😄 The "tapai" should give you a peek into the Sarawakian's rice wine known as "tuak". If tapai were allowed to ferment longer, it'll produce alcohol and become "tuak". 😆 The beans is four-winged beans or "kacang botor". You've had that wajik before a different version where the glutinous rice isn't mashed.

Tapai is normally made of sticky rice and yeast. From my recollection, my granny never add sugar to the tapai. The sugar will be a by product from fermentation. For Muslims, they will eat the tapai just before it starts to produce alcohol. In Sarawak, it will be fermented until alcohol is produced, then collected to be drank as Tuak.

My favorite would be chapati because it's no so oily compared to roti canai. I'm not sure what dosa is, maybe you mean thosai. Dosa means sin in Malay .

Yeah, I meant thosai. My fault. Although I am surprised so many votes for chapati!

Tapai is actually glutinuous rice mixed with some sugar and locally made yeast (called ragi). If you ferment it longer it will produce rice wine or called "tuak" for us in Sarawak..usuaully served during the Harvest Festival (Gawai Dayak) on 1st June.

Tapai is good stuff! I actually asked Ajib if Muslims were allowed to eat tapai because of the alcohol. He told me the same thing! The way we ate it, it's not alcohol yet, and is safe to eat.

@@JetLagWarriors fermented food such as tapai is halal to consume. the food is made itself to be eaten in such way and not making it into alcoholic drinking water. if it is to made for tuak then it is consider haram because in islam it is not that alcohol that is haram; but the result of drink those food/drinks and you get drunk most of it because of anaerobic fermentation to make alcohol like wine. so every drink that can make us drunk is haram and drugs is considered like that same way because it make a person who consume it became uncontrollable of his own mind. even if a little add of beer into any drink is also haram even it can't make us drunk because that beer is haram even a little. for tapai, we need to make sure that if the fermented tapai is kept for to long and can make a person feel drunk consume it, then it is not halal to eat/drink anymore. actually the process to make tapai pulut is only using glutinous rice and yeast. no sugar added because the glutinous rice itself will became sweet after fermentation. normally we fermented it for 2 to 3 days before consume. the leaf that normally used to wrap it is rubber tree leaf. there is one more popular tapai made from tapioca called tapai ubi. i like tapai ubi more.....
