The castle was built by the Teutonic Order after the conquest of Old Prussia. Its main purpose was to strengthen their own control of the area following the Order's 1274 suppression of the Great Prussian Uprising of the Baltic tribes.

Much that we see here was reconstructed. Malbork/Marienburg was badly damaged by shelling during WW2, with furnishings, artwork, and books being destroyed as well. Some of the artwork seen in the castle today (not all, certainly) was brought from elsewhere. As an aside, I will never understand why those who create a great video like this - about a medieval castle - decided to add JAZZ MUSIC into the mix. It ruins the viewing experiences and related atmosphere, no different than making a video about Prohibition in the USA in the 1920's and having Gregorian chant in the background. When we see places like this we try to envision them as they once were. The right music can really add a lot towards this end.

I like jazz, especially jazz guitar, but this is ridiculous! Why on earth do you need music at all, and if so, then something from the era. It distracts from an otherwise interesting video

Ummm, there was no "Germany" at that time, and there wouldn't be for another 600 years.
@oceandrainer
@oceandrainer 6 лет назад
Thomas Kwiatkowski He never said anything about the modern country of Germany. Germans as an ethnicity still existed though, you dunce. The Teutonic Order was comprised of Germanic peoples. Just like English is a West-Germanic language. I mean, what are you saying? The modern nation of Greece didn't exist until 1832. Does that mean the "Greeks" didn't exist before then?
@thomaskwiatkowskiesq.328
@thomaskwiatkowskiesq.328 6 лет назад
oceandrainer Yes he did. No one is denying that the Teutonic Knights built this castle, or that they had mostly Germanic membership. But there is a huge difference between "German" and "Germanic", especially when you discuss medieval times. The Teutonic Knights couldn't care less about any Germanic ideas anyway, they just wanted to expand their own little Empire.
@oceandrainer
@oceandrainer 6 лет назад
Well, this is getting very pedantic, haha. I think your original response to Andi Roth was pointless, because of course no one is saying "people from the modern day country of Germany went back in time and built Marienburg." I mean, we could probably discuss all day about what constitutes ethnicity/language/culture, etc. The terms "Germani" and "Germania" have existed for over 2000 years, described by Roman writers. The Holy Roman Empire was almost entirely Germanic (ethnically German, German-speaking, what have you). During that time there was something called the "Kingdom of Germany" too. Just wikipedia it. But again, I agree most people will assume when a person says they are "German" they are from the country of Germany, but it can also mean a German-speaker, or someone who considers themselves culturally German, from Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, etc. "Germanic" would encompass more of a group of culturally and linguistically related peoples in Central and Western Europe (Danes, Norwegians, English, Dutch, etc). I will give you an example. I have a friend from Switzerland, and when people ask him where he's from he will say Switzerland. But if people ask him what language he speaks, he will say German, and will also say he is culturally German. This doesn't mean it has anything to do with the modern day boundaries of the country named Germany. It's like if people say they are Anglo-Saxon culturally, it doesn't necessarily mean they are from England. They speak English, but they are not from the country of England. Things are not really black-and-white when it comes to shifting borders, country names, ethnicity, language etc. We can just paint with broad strokes when it comes to such large issues.
