Having read all of his books, I never would have thought I would ever accuse Malcolm G. of having a huge blindspot. But when he said he thought the schools would do something "thoughtful" to remedy the disadvantages of the youngest in a class, if makes me wonder. When in history...just one time...have the teachers unions ever allowed anything thoughtful to be done that is best for the students, primarily?

I love Malcolm. Solid Canadian and not dumb enough to hate Megyn for her efforts to be independent and objective.

I’d be damned to hand the reigns of my child’s well-being over to an inept public school bureaucrat.

Interesting segment. I had not thought of this disparity. Just sent to a friend who coaches youth soccer asking if she has noticed this.

This relative age in a class is an interesting topic; one since my birthday is in October, I have long been aware of. I was in school in the '50's and '60's. At that time teachers were still considered to be respected professionals. And they were respected. Looking back I think my teachers were well aware of the age spread in their classes and managed it well. I personally was not troubled at all academically (I excelled) but I never was very interested in athletics (I was not competitive). Until listening to this it had not occurred to me that my disinterest in sports might have been a relative age thing. To me the most interesting point made is the idea of staging testing to the students birth-date.

I blamed my parents for not getting me help with my learning disabilities, dyslexic for one. I was always in some kind of LD class in high school. I had problems with math, remembering numbers. I still can't do the times tables, my husband almost died when he learned that. 😄 I didn't understand why I had a problem, now they lable everyone. I have gifts I'm proud of now and I'm not mad at Mom and Dad anymore. Back then your a dummy or smart. It took a lot to get over that! 😄

I can't remember the math tables at all. That's basically most of math is just memory. Yet I can still operate normally and do algebra and geometry. I just don't excel at it so I'm C average math student graduate of 88. 😆

@@wjdyr6261 I actually enjoyed algebra when I went to college. I just couldn't pass the tests, there was too many formulas to remember. It's was fun... I love geometry too because I like to draw.

@@human-qp1mf I joke with people about the IQ test and that 130 is considered genius and I'm at 129. So I'm on the dumbass side of genius

The birth month matters a lot in sports. Born in late March, on the playground in grade school and during PE in high school I was playing with kids up to seven months older than me. As an athlete I was far from impressive. Then scheduling issues in the eleventh grade placed me in PE with tenth grade boys who were five to as much as seventeen months younger than me. In that situation, I discovered that I was quite the athlete. I could easily handle their pitches, hit the ball almost any place I wanted, and had a batting average of about .500. And in the tenth/eleventh grades those age differences were far smaller in relative terms than in the third or fourth grade.

An easy solution for parent is not to rush their kids. If they are born towards the end of the year, it may be a good idea to postpone their school attendance by a year.

I am a person who does not want their birthday celebrated, but am super keen on celebrating the birthdays of those I care about.

Per my experience, bday s not an indicator. All depends on the kid. Mine & some oth kids I know started school a whole year earlier than states bday cut off deadline. Mine was best in classes throughout & graduated on top of his highschool class. Re: sports: Jr. Varsity & then Varsity in highschool. The coaches never noticed that 12-18 months age difference w teammates. If I had held my kid back, I would have a problem of bored to death unmotivated teen.
