Malcom McLaren interviewed by Jools Holland. Recorded by me on Friday November 19th 1982, using Sony Betamax VCR and Sony L500 video tape. The Buffalo Gals promo was broadcast after the interview, but this has been edited out by me due to copyright reasons and who has not seen it anyway?

This must be very strange for any person under 50 to watch this for Malcolm to explain the concept of Hip Hop, Scratching , DJ ing etc but prior to that it wasnt disscussed on tv at all.

Nah, life don’t work like dat playa. Hip Hop is more than the external it’s the soul. This man has none just the ability to manipulate it.

Because it was a new concept, scratching was cheap way of sampling, before sampling was known. Today it's all sampling.

hard to imagine that malcolm was the one introducing the basics of modern music production to uk audiences. it was the point in time where it became clear that nyc took back what the beatles had taken from them 20 years ago- with the help of malcolm has to be said since bufallo gals helped taking the sound downtown - along with blue and the roxy
@neilsun2521

Bambaata took 'Trans Europe Express' from Kraftwerk and made hip hop out of it. Scratching is not the "basics of modern music production". Computers were. And Kraftwerk and others had been using them through the '70s. (And if the Beatles "took" something from nyc then maybe nyc just couldn't do it as well as them.)

Tbh hip hop was birthed in Buffalo. And that’s the ironic part about it. Buffalo culture is much more in depth than NYC in the performing arts. Y’all act like Al this doesn’t stem from Rapso aka Calypso
