I'm sure he would've talked about him if he had time. You can tell this guy can tell stories for hours. This interview was too short. Conan was rushing him along for the TV show.
Glen Matlock was against the songs God Save The Queen and Anarchy In The UK. He didn’t like the controversy, he wanted to make music that would make them money and popularity. Who gives a shit about this guy.
Lucky enough to meet this genius. this inspiration, this artist. MM is probably one of the most influential men, icon and creative minds ever x Peace, Love & Reality ro all who find such posts as this x
This story is so well played out in the new Pistols series. Great show! Danny Boyle did an outstanding job. The awesome Thomas Brodie-Sangster plays Malcolm so wonderfully too! And Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders is a well played main character too. So great!
@@cyclingSausage I love the John Lydon actor. At first he was over the top but by the end of episode 2 I loved him. The one smart guy in the band, I don't think John will mind the way he is presented. All I've seen and read matches perfectly.

@@marcraygun6290 a worthwhile pilgrimage, unfortunately though the quote on his grave is slightly wrong, not in meaning, rather in the words used. The quote reads: Better a spectacular failure, than a benign success Whereas in an early 00’s documentary Malcolm said: It is better to be a flamboyant failure than any kind of benign success I know I’m being pedantic but the use of language was one McLaren’s key tools and flamboyant is more apposite than spectacular. I guess it’s ironic that I’m being picky about this given how wilfully loose McLaren was with facts, however, he also believed in the power of the story and telling it right. Enjoy your trip!
He's the original punk. It's not important world history, is it? Anybody can tell a story. And all Malcolm's cohorts have done. Part of the truth is being able to tell the story.

Glen Matlock was a dumbass. He may have beena musician but he was against what truly made Sex Pistols great. If Glen Matlock had his way, the band would have been just another tool made to make money. He was against important songs such as God Save The Queen and Anarchy In The UK.
Both Cook and Jones were also good musicians, hence them having careers in music after and doing session work for numerous artists. As for Lydon, he’s a great songwriter as the numerous incarnations of PiL proved and the level of musicians that wanted to work with him.
@@punkoid76 Sorry! Totally disagree. Matlock was the only one who could actually play whilst the others were basic novices. I've seen the professionals and Paul Cook is an excellent drummer and singer so to a certain extent is Jones. That's open for debate. But my argument is based solely on musical ability and Glenn Matlock was the only true musician in the pistols.

You can't Swindle A Swindler You Cant Bullshit A BullShitter But He Did An Awful Lot For Punk And Hip Hop A Big Thanks To Malcolm He Knew Just Where It Was At And At The Right Time 👌
Glen was in the band before John, let alone Sid. They ended up kicking out Glen because he was too serious which is how Sid ended up as the bass player. Sid got his name because he was bit by someones hamster, which was named Sid and when it bit him he kept saying how vicious the creature was. John and Steve gave him the name, not Malcolm. Also, John and Sid were mates, to this day John has a ton of guilt for bringing him into the Pistols because he thinks had he never done that Sid never would have met Nancy,... or more like, Nancy never would have given Sid the time of day. She was pure groupie and never bothered with anyone not in a band..... well, except drug dealers. Malcom is doing his usual embellishing, but that's always been who Malcolm is.
It is awful the way that the real musical force of the Sex Pistols is written out of this telling. Glen Matlock was the most talented member of the group and co-wrote almost everything they did. After he left, the Pistol's stopped writing new songs and they imploded less than a year later. Matlock's biggest crime was just being the uncool competent guy who got shit done.
Here, Conan's enthusiasm was no match for Maclaren's acerbic wit. Also, what he (Maclaren) was trying to say is that he didn't so much sing as "sort of" sing on the album Paris as coo and speak, just like DENOOVE (?). Come on Conan. Deneuve.
That Épating, yet natural disdain NOT to shake hands with the other guests is somehow so right. Conan is a very intelligent man yet was upended by Talcy Malcy. Yes, he's full of shit but had a lot of moxie - and heart - paid for Sid's bail. Even Lydon, who had some 1.6 million stolen from him could not bring himself to not attend the man's funeral. Not just a haberdasher, more a situationist/iconoclast, from a time when people had genuine personalities and not venal, commodified "personalities". Very interesting.
Malcolm McCaren was the 2nd manager for the Sex Pistols. He did not create them. found John Lydon with "green hair and a I hate pink floyd tshirt" and added him to the band though.

Malcolm didn't mention Glen Matlock, original bass player in The Sex Pistols. Glen could actually play very well, he was a real musician, whereas Sidney The Vicious was deeply untalented.
That’s because he’s telling a story. Glen could play, but ultimately was uninteresting. If the Sex Pistols had been centred around Glen and his worthy musicianship then they would’ve sunk into the mire of ok-ish groups, we certainly wouldn’t be still talking about them now.
@@neilprocter3755 Glen Matlock was "ultimately uninteresting"? Steve Jones & Paul Cook had some musical competence, but this doesn't also render them "ultimately uninteresting"? If Glen had remained in the group, the Pistols would have had a chance to be more than a one record group. The deeply untalented Sidney the Vicious hastened the end of the group. Nihilism is not interesting. The Clash were centered on the "worthy musicianship" of Mick Jones & Topper Headon. They got better & better with every album. Did they "sink into the mire of ok-ish"? Why are The Clash still being talked about?
@@ericmalone3213 I don’t think The Clash, successful as they were, became a household name like the Sex Pistols did. The Clash ended up being merely stadium status, whereas the Pistols are legendary. They were from the getgo. There was no need for them to make another record, their mission was accomplished.
@@neilprocter3755 A highly subjective viewpoint you're displaying. The Sex Pistols music was only known to certain households. Their hype, hyperbole & media horseshite ("throwing up on stage" "throwing up on the audience" "urinating on the audience" etc etc) initially got a great deal of coverage--all nonsense of course--compounded by Sid's killing of Nancy & his subsequent overdose death. The tabloid coverage eclipsed the music at the time as far as "household" name recognition was concerned. "The Pistols are legendary. They were from the getgo" "Legendary" (like "iconic") belongs to the language of publicists & media hacks. What the Pistols were at the get-go was an example to other bands that you didn't have to have much skill or ability, you could get on stage in a local venue and play to 100 of your pals. That's great when you're barely out of your teens and have to start somewhere. But the key to creativity is evolution, not being The Ramones for 40 years. "The Clash ended up being merely stadium status." Merely? This is subjective belittlement. The only time The Clash played in stadiums was at the very end of their career when they opened for The Who. You seem to have forgotten The Sex Pistols shameless nostalgia act, the 1996 "Filthy Lucre" tour, which included stadiums. The Clash left behind a great deal more substance , versatility & intelligence than The Sex Pistols could ever have mustered. The Pistols album is 3 chord monotony. Take the vocals out & the music easily passes for re-heated New York Dolls. The Clash had much more to offer just on their first album alone. Kleenex is a household name. The best group to have emerged from the so called "punk" scene is The Slits, featuring John The Rotten's step-daughter Arri Up. Theirs was the most original, beyond category music. CUT is as fresh today as was in 1979. Malcolm McLaren was always revising history to suit whatever tale he wanted to tell. He proved that if you're a very clever artful dodger, you can skip along on the bullshit for a good stretch of time, even tho you possess zero talent or ability beyond being a good bloviating interview subject.
@@ericmalone3213 thank you for writing so much. Your polemic about the Pistols takes me back to the good old days of the late ‘70s, when punk and post-punk, the new musick as it was initially proclaimed, thrived on such things. There was nothing like deep disagreement to fuel the fire so to speak; punk was against everything, even itself! Not surprisingly we’re going to have to agree to disagree. I’m afraid whilst I recognise that The Clash are an important part of the cannon, I didn’t, and still don’t, find them as exciting as the Pistols. In that sense we arrive at the same point we were always at.
