Malcolm was making some naive arguments at this point in his life still. His heart was in the right place, but he was totally blind to the fact that the American Black Muslim idea of building a sovereign nation in and-or out of the United States was a total fantasy. And that was just one the many "charlatanical" concept the muslims were feeding it constituency, and Malcolm was too angry at Whites to see it. Malcolm was a dreamer. Baldwin was a realest.

Seems to me his goal was to get Malcolm X to say something that would divide civil rights into two opposed camps; to pit them against each other. It just amazed me how Malcolm X can keep his cool and his focus in the face of this bs.
Malcolm was cut off so many times, and for him to maintain composure while standing firm on his points made me realize the pressure that was on him. He’s not just representing himself he was representing the organization and the religion he practiced as well as his race.

Every single phrase that comes from Malcolm X's mouth is always quite enlightening and educational. Even the demons in this video couldn't squash his God-given wisdom, even though they tried, each time that what was being shared was crucial to our knowledge. It's not "what" so much as "who" has not changed. Things have changed because of judicial decisions and legislation that was "forced" upon white people. Interesting conversation. Baldwin and Malcolm had different presentations of similar issues. They both knew that, first, they were black men in a country that didn't want them and, STILL, doesn't. Personally, I feel that the facilitators did their best to pit Baldwin and Malcolm against each other. Mr. Lincoln the same. I agreed with parts of each, regarding their ideas, referring to Malcolm, Baldwin, and Lincoln. This conversation unfortunately goes on to this day.....

I’m sure Malcolm and James had to hold themselves together not snap over that question. Especially living as a black person during that era. Baldwin literally moved to another country because it was so bad as black man here during those times. I’m aware of Mr. Baldwins sexuality but people didn’t see him as gay first, they saw him as black.

This was a great conversation,in 1961some of the same topics in 2024 still being discussed, Everyone on the panel had a point or biases about the government, race, and economy. The white guy said blacks unite it would be a catastrophe, but they never will.. Wow!
I looked up the panelists and all four of them were Black men. Some comments have falsely stated that a panelist was “white”. That’s incorrect. George Schuyler was a Black Harvard graduate and he was probably Christian and I’m guessing C. Eric Lincoln was Christian also and he wrote a book about the Black Muslims. I bring that up because of the topic and the dissenting opinions highlighting the Black Muslims. I’m 5 minutes in and the antagonism and rudeness towards Brother Malcolm is astonishing. This has been a topic none of us have been able to settle with a clear view of identity and how we use our agency in this racist and economically imbalanced society. Looking at this conversation from this current era, the socioeconomic climate this panel is debating is still relevant. Also, I don’t like the gaslighting being displayed. The dissenting opinions are giving “respectability” is the best method for the Black community to get ahead in this country. Schuyler was down-right rude! Along with the moderator.

Thar explains his attitude towards Malcolm. This is an excerpt from an article on him. By the 1960s Schuyler criticized and condemned social activists such as W.E.B. This was a very interesting interview . We were able to understand more about the Black Muslim movement in the early 1960’s . I understood this as a discussion about the nature of race relations in the U.S. at the time in history AND how various Black American leaders viewed HOW to gain a better economic foothold and more self determination political power in the U.S. for all Black Americans I do believe it to be interesting for the NOI to position itself against the white society of the United States and for the NOI to campaign for the creation of an independent African-American nation-state, calling for African Americans to be economically self-sufficient and separatist. Unfortunately , there was a lot of back and forth parsing words and the group of interviewees had a hard time as a group agreeing to what the other person was saying All of that said , this is 60 years ago . I’m not Black , but I can easily see and recognize that the average non White citizen in the U.S. has a more difficult time for achieving his or his share of the “American Dream “ economically and politically . So as an American , I’m disappointed to know this despite efforts by many good people and three generations . I’m looking forward to REAL progress here . Malcolm X wasn’t willing wait 1000 years or 100 years . We are at 60 years .

Malcolm X’s name is a stroke of genius I think, “X” marking a deprivation (black people being uprooted from their past and their identity erased), but crucially, he didn’t adopt an african name or muslim name like others. The “X” is more radical, because it symbolizes the unique opportunity of blacks in america to create something entirely new, the independent nation he was talking about. It’s a similar situation in post-colonial countries, “decolonization” isn’t reverting back to how things were before, but creating something entirely new and unique from your situation…

Interviews such as this during that time period were very consistent. A fact finding mission. A public interrogation. As well as trying to get the interviewee to say or agree to exactly what the interviewers agenda is. The problem is that the people who are the most polarizing are way too smart to follow the interviewers' script. Not everything is as simple as "yes or no." And it frustrates to opposition when intellectuals don't answer questions in simple terms.
While I greatly enjoy hearing Malcolm and James having a good debate, I cannot say I miss this style of journalism, where the interviewer or moderator cuts off, and tries to control the narrative instead of allowing the debate to happen naturally. Each person here was constantly cut off, interrupted and pushed towards other topics.

It doesn't matter if someone hates another. What matters is if and how, more importantly, that hatred can be transformed through tangible, applied, non-theoretical means within society. That has only happened one way in western society.

Lincoln is an air head in this interview. Malcolm answers his questions and provides insight in how things operate and repeatedly gives him the info he needs, but he's so dense he can't figure out that they were yes and no answers. His utter ignorance and stupidity shows how easy it was for him to gain the title of scholar.
When Malcolm was in the Nation, he wasn't as great an orator. Once he was able to speak his own mind through what he learned, that's the Malcolm I pay attention to.

Malcolm X obtained a law degree whilst in jail. He beat white Ivy league college debaters as a self made man. He was a genius and a true revolutionary. 👍
