I’m 20 and just decided I want to switch from athletic training to DH and it makes me happy to know there are other black men who’ve done it in a field occupied by women mostly. Glad I found this video.
i’m going to college in August to study in the dental field. my main focus is to become a Dental Hygienist and i’m nervous. i hope things turn out well for myself. also, thank you for this amazing video! you were very specific and answered the questions i’ve had while watching.
That’s awesome. I transitioned out of the army March 2020 and started taking my prerequisites this past summer for dental hygienist. Hopefully I can get in the program when the time comes and more forward with my life.
Great video! I also joined the military when I was 18(now 23) and did four years as security force’s and now I’m in my second semester of college trying to become a dental hygienist!
Great story, I love to see Black men excelling in life, especially starting at such a young age. Keep up the good work I commend you for setting a good example for the generations to come. Peace be upon you young man!
Great video I’m actually currently 19 active duty in the army right now for a year and a half an my dream is to become a hygienist an that video you made really encouraged me to keep pushing so I can take a class on it.
I didn't come from the military but from tough situations and homelessness became a dental assistant and was the best thing I did for myself now I'm going to school in March for Dental Hygiene see you on the other side!!!!! 💪💪💪
Thank you for this, This is much needed for me knowing that I will be 24 also when I leave the Navy and a MP as well. Being a dental hygienist is a big goal after being in the service.
I think this is a great video. I’m currently in the military and I’m transitioning now, because it’s really now for me. I’m just not happy. This really gives me hope, there’s more than the military.
Yes honestly I was discouraged from my advisor to try to get into the dental hygiene school cause it’s very competitive..I told her well I’m competitive too 😌 glad you reached your goal
Thank you so much for this. I’m a dental assistant, and I’m on the waiting list for the dental hygiene program in SC. Can you talk about your classes in Hygiene school as well as how you provided for your family while going back to school.
Bro I'm 40 years old and I have been a heavy equipment operator since i was 22 years old and honestly man i think im just burnt out on operating. Im thinking about making a major career change at this age. Appreciate the motivation.
I’m in the same exact position sheesh I’m 25 , 2 kids .getting out of the Air Force as well ! Looking into doing RDH as well . Good content this just lifted my spirit because you were literally in my exact shoes
Currently in the Corps, getting all my pre-reqs done with USMC paying for them rn. Nervous to get out, but really want to pursue the dental hygiene career.
Hey man thank you so much for your service I as well was a military cop in the Army 31B I’m looking to do this as well. Very helpful I appreciate it!!!!! I just got out.
Cooperdcreech 13 It was my pleasure thanks for your service also brotha✊🏾. Glad this was helpful! Make sure to check out my other content. I have some more topics coming soon.
As a RDH i past apon your videos and love the way u talk and think about your role as a RDH and how u got to this position...waiting for more...good luck
Just came across your video. I’m in the same position. Spent 10 years in the military and got out on October 2018. I was lost for a year trying to decide what I wanted to do and wasted 10 months of my GI BILL. Came across dental hygiene and was dead set. Unfortunately, I got denied admission due to not having any chemistry or microbiology classes or experience as a dental assistant. I’m stating a 10 week dental assistant program and my ultimate goal is still dental hygiene. Can you talk about your pre-requisites for the specific school? I’m in Tennessee and it seems like the schools here require so much. What were your grades on the science pre-requisites and did you already have those completed why you were in the military or when you got out. I’m 30 and feel like I’m taking a step back in my career when I chose to get out, so I’ve been looking endlessly for tips on how ppl got into dental programs especially considering how competitive it is.
Glad I ran across your page I just enrolled and one of my fears was being a male doing a “Woman’s” job. I’ve fully subscribed and look forward to future clips from you that helps and keeps me encouraged down the road.
Brandon Macnear Dope brotha! I’m glad I can encourage and hope to motivate you to get through your journey. Let me know if you need advice on anything.
Ik how you feel man.. I’ve been thinking about becoming a dental hygienist but strangely I feel off about being a male in this career ... either way I’ll still continue to pursuit this career
Great video Bro!!!! I'm in the Atlanta Metro area as well, and I thought about Fortis College But I'm closer to Clayton State University and Georgia State University. So I'll be apply to both of those schools. Yeah sometimes those admissions reps are looking out for their own interest instead of the potential students', it's a numbers game for them.
Advisors goals are to get more tuition out of you. I had an advisor tell me as well to pay for dental assisting, then pay for dental hygienist, then pay for prereqs and a dental hygiene bachelors. Ridiculous. If you want to be a hygienist being an assistant is a waste of time and money
Hey man, thanks for sharing your journey. It really motivates me to consider giving dental hygiene a try. One question I have is this: did you find yourself being disadvantaged and stereotyped because you are a male, either in the school application process or in the hiring process? How accepting was your school and your current job of male hygienists?
Edward Floyd dope bro! I’m prior service army. Stationed at Carson. Got out in 2019. Went to school for 2 semesters (majoring in accounting) and now that coronavirus is impacting my college experience, I decided to withdraw from all of my classes. Through my time not in school, it’s been making me go through my endless list of options. I’m really thinking about being an electrician. I’m a beginner to all things electric but it does seem pretty cool. I also enjoy physical related work and moving around honestly. Dental hygiene school is another cool option.
I'm 28 and I graduated with a degree in Film. Film has not exactly been rewarding for myself and it's hard to make a living or get any traction in this field. I enjoy taking care of my teeth and have never been uncomfortable in the dentist's office. I've been thinking about potentially becoming a dental hygienist.
Wow they just told me the same thing. They talked to me as if I wouldn't be able to pass the dental hygienist class and wanted me to try the assistant course . Smh
Hey Chris, this is super motivating, thank you for making this video! I just got out the marine corps about 7 months ago and I’m a dad also. I’ve been taking prerequisites at a community college with plans to transfer into a dental hygiene program. Ngl these stem courses ain’t easy! I’ve just come to realize that getting into a bachelor dental hygiene program is extremely competitive and honestly I need to plan for if I don’t make it in. They really got people waiting a whole year after being rejected to apply again… whos got time for that?? I’m about 2 semesters out from applying to a program, any recommendations on how I can be more successful going into it?? I know an associates requires the same curriculum before starting the program. Did fortis require that you do some shadowing prior?
Bro this is literally me right now at 24 .. getting into dental assistant & trying to find a good hygiene program .. how was fortis ? I live in Smyrna GA TOO LOL
@@jakeseeley2712 O.o I’m not alone!! I’m also 24 years old. I just finished my dental assistant program and currently looking for a job. I do want to try get into dental hygiene later.
I'm so sorry I thought I responded to this....Fortis was for me a means to getting what I wanted which was to become a hygienist. It has its pros and cons. I'm going to do a video on this topic.
i’m 17 currently in my senior year of HS , and i wanted to talk to you more on this topic because i want to join the navy and become a dental hygienist after my 4 yrs
Hey Chris! I’m 17 years old and about to start my senior year in high school. For a few years, I’ve wanted to work in the dental area. I came to the conclusion about a year and a half ago that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. After further research, I’ve noticed that this field is mainly dominated by women. Is this going to affect my chances of being hired as a male dental hygienist? Should I look for another possible career in the medical field? Or should gender not affect my chances to heavily
Nice dude, I’m 18 about to finish my senior year and I needed this. I felt as if I’d have a harder chance finding a job as a male but there are plenty of dental places near me. I’m still juggling between different careers tho
I’m on my freshman year of high school and I think that’s what i want to do I’m just worried about my body giving out after a few years because of how physically demanding it is and how I want to move and if I could get a job because I’m a male
My neighbor and me are both set on becoming DH but im doing dental assisting first, hes gunna try to go right into it, i saw the wall at my school of pictures of previous classes and pretty much all were female, i wonder why that is? I'm glad to see some males getting into it too like my neighbor....how are you liking your job nowadays?
Congrats! I am torn between a few colleges and spoke to an advisor at Fortis college but was not able to get anwars. Can you tell me what were the requirements in order to get into the dental hygienist program at fortis? How many students are were accepted in your class and how long did it take for you to complete the program?
naturaltheia6617 They look at your last transcript, you take an long test on general curriculum called the HESI, write a letter, and interview. I believe every programs acceptance requirements are different. At my school they were accepting 13 per class twice a year.
Oh cool. I'm in Fortis as well. In Maryland. Had to do exactly all that you had to do. Plus all that medical history documentation that was intimidating in and of itself. They accepted 15 for my class plus 2 extra from.......I think one failed and is trying again.......and...... just realizing that I dont know who the other one is....lol. Gotta figure that out. I was hoping for a more intimate number of students. Hefty size class. I'm glad you stepped out of the dental Assisting program. I have a friend/coworker who they did that to. All about the money.
BIG SIS TALK with Bri I was very insecure about my gap as a kid so much so I asked in a letter to give up Christmas to get braces. Of course she couldn’t afford it, that was the tone of my paper. Being able to help give back security in self through a nice healthy smile. Because that is one of the first things people notice.
@@warlordartist4966 Yep I am! Yesterday was my last day in Highschool and I'll be graduating on June 7. Got everything ready, I just have to do my math placement test. Don't worry there are plenty of guys who want to have this job. I just became friends with one guy who also wanted to be a dental hygienist and we'll be going to the same college. If dental hygiene is what you REALLY want to pursue then do not hesitate.
Im hoping to go into dental hygiene next year. I am really nervous because the percentage of male dental hygienists is so low. Did this ever affect you and if so how did you overcome this? Also what is your least favourite part of the job? Thank you for your time.
I'm taking prerequisites to apply for Hygiene program. How many guys were in your class? can you do more videos about hygiene school? tips? finding a job? what was your GPA when you applied?
i had the same experience from smyrna ga i applied how long did the whole process take i have taken the wonderlic and turn in my essay HESI is postpone due to covid i have a medical assistant diploma i hope i get in they ate excepting only 20 people to a class
Hard to say with the timeframe cause I started with Dental Assisting then applied to Hygiene program at the same school and got in, so it felt seemless.
@@Justchrislove so no clinicals on Weekends? What about a Friday night like 6pm - 11 pm? Also do u think DH is a better idea than LPN with slight possibilty of RN bridge? I was looking at both careers....Im 41 with 3 kids and concerned about longevity and stability and full time work.... Also what can I do to stand out for DH school? Alot of people are telling me go 4 Nursing but I feel like my heart is saying DH but on paper LPN/ RN looks good. I feel like DH is prevenative to systemic diseases and can make an impact and nursing is good career but just giving out meds rather than getting to the root of the problem... I feel like I came to the occlusion that DH is best fit even thou my DH and dentist said choose nursing as Its broader? Any advice ....
So I was thinking I would shadow different dental offices like perio, pediatrics , etc. Classes I have purchased online are dentistry 101, purpose driven dental assisting, oral cavity portal to health and disease.oral patholgy, oral biology, dental x rays for dum dums, principles and clinicals practice of periodontology ...crash course on tooth decay. Gum disease....pharmacolgy mnemonics for ADC....histeolgy and osteolgy. Anatomy of the head and neck....dental caries course....nitrous oxide course for dental...physiolgy of sitting with how to improve health and fitness.plus more to come - classes...
Well not only that but dental assistant is a bullshit asss job. Getting paid only 10-15 dollars after going to school for a year. Rather go for 2-3 years getting my associates and becoming an hygienist and making 50k plus just starting off
