A male Pileated Woodpecker arrives in front of the Cornell Lab FeederWatch cam at Sapsucker Woods and gives viewers an opportunity to compare his size with some of the other common feeder species. Pileated Woodpeckers are about the size of an American Crow, and they are the largest species that frequents the feeders at this site.
Watch LIVE at AllAboutBirds.o... for news, updates, and more information about the pond and its surroundings.
This FeederWatch cam is located in the Treman Bird Feeding Garden at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. Perched on the edge of both Sapsucker Woods and its 10-acre pond, these feeders attract both forest species like chickadees and woodpeckers as well as some species that prefer open environments near water like Red-winged Blackbirds.
The Wild Birds Unlimited store at Sapsucker Woods has been a part of the visitor experience in the Cornell Lab’s Visitor Center ever since the new building opened in 2003. They are the preferred vendor of official Cornell Lab merchandise and offer a dizzying number of feeders, binoculars, and birdwatching-related gear and gifts to make any bird enthusiast happy. WBU has also pledged support for many of the Cornell Lab’s local efforts, including providing the bird feeders and food for this FeederWatch Cam.
The FeederWatch cam hardware includes an Axis P1448-LE camera with an an ETS ML1-WPW microphone.

I love how he turns his head and listens, just like when they are hunting for grubs under tree bark. I have them here, but they have never come to my feeders, even though I have a tray feeder and a suet feeder.

If one of these birds shows up and starts pecking at your house, call the exterminator you probably have carpenter ants.

Do you make your suet? I have just begun making my own. I have a source for beef fat at a local butcher shop. I rendered it down and added different seeds and meals, like corn meal, oatmeal and have added peanut butter, also. My question is, have you just used raw suet? And, have you used just rendered suet only or do you always add to it?

I love the woodpeckers. I’ve been having problems lately with too many hawks visiting. I used discarded Christmas trees in corners and built a few brush piles, so maybe that will help the little guys escape..

I have lots of pileated woodpeckers in my backyard and they use the bird bath all the time but they don't use the feeder! I am so frustrated because I bought the feeder just for them! I put peanuts (woodpecker feed) and other birds love them, just not my woodys! :-(
