This time we decided to explore the world’s third largest island... Borneo! Intrigued by its ancient equatorial rainforests, spectacular jungle wildlife, rich indigenous culture and culinary melting pot, we were looking for something wild - Borneo sure did not disappoint!
Come on an adventure with us as we explore Sabah, the Malaysian part of Borneo. We discover untouched primary rainforests, where you feel like you are in the Jurassic lost world; catch a glimpse in the dense canopy of wildlife such as the endangered orangutan and the cartoon like proboscis monkey; learn about the heritage and old traditions of the Murut and the Kadazandusun tribes and admire the wide range of delicious cuisine of this magnificent island.
Today, we finally reach the Maliau Basin, a truly untouched rainforest older than humanity. People call it the lost world and Maliau is for sure as wild as it gets. This primary uncut tropical forest in a shaped bowl depression is a paradise for botanists and nature lovers with its 2000+ types of fauna and flora (and more awaiting to be discovered!).
If you are lucky, you can spot in this dense jungle: barking deers, bornean gibbons, pig tailed and red-leaf monkeys, extremely more rarely the sun bear, proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards and pythons as well as many species of birds including the rare Bulwer's pheasant. But the most impressive of them all are the endangered pigmy elephants. Did we spot any of them?
Check it out! And let's get lost!

The plant - a palm you used as a fan is called Licuala Mapu . It is sought after by Exotic Plant collectors and is sold at quite an expensive price during the Pandemic.

I think you really did your research. The elephant are frequently seen around Maliau Basin and Kalabakan. You two are fun. Even in the jungle you know how to enjoy yourself.❤

Hello Will. I’m planning to go there. As you mentioned your trip was organised. How did you go about that? Did you have an agent to take care of that? We are a family of 3 and would like free and easy, and setup tent at the Belian Campground.

Hey! Thx for your message. we went there independently with a rental car. We couldn’t camp as it was the elephants season and it was too dangerous. I’d recommend to contact the MBCA beforehand to organise treks as you need to book in advance. maliaubasin.org/home/ This jungle is magical, you will love it!

If in Sabah there is an area called Maliau, in North Kalimantan there is an area called Malinau which is directly adjacent to the state of Sarawak.

@Your Travel Buddy Will correction. Borneo lowland jungle is 140m years old. Peninsula jungle is 130m years old. Making Malaysia having the oldest tropical rainforest in the world. While the oldest rainforest it in queensland daintree.

oh whah. even older that I thought! thx for that!

I think during the ice age, sea level was low. This allowed animals and humans to migrate from Asia to Borneo. I doubt elephants are from java.
