In regards to the whole “killer pointlessly toying with their prey” trope, you need look no further than Freddy Kruger and Pennywise for how to do it right. Both these killers gain something from taking time to scare their victims instead of killing them outright. Pennywise because fear improves the taste when he eats them. And Freddy because he gains power the more people believe in him. Just have your killer need something along those lines, and you can have “needlessly” scary scenes that make sense with the world you establish.
@EricHamm
@EricHamm 3 года назад
No to mention that is what some maschocist serial killers do in real like. The feeling of dominance over there victims is a important part of the act.
@thomasburn3247
@thomasburn3247 3 года назад
If you do do it though do it well. Like I read this book right, it has nothing to do with this but anyway, and you got the killers backstory and how he became like he was. So if you want to create a sadistic killer show how they became that person, show why, show times when they were like that.

@MoostachedSaiyanPrince
@MoostachedSaiyanPrince 3 года назад
Yeah, the only way that a killer toying with their victim rather than killing them works is if your killer has an established reason for doing so, like something in their their backstory. Specifically, something that makes them want to force their victim to fear them as much as possible before killing them, or one that makes the killer want to feel like they have absolute control over the victim before finishing them off.

James Wann said he wanted to make a movie you'd randomly find at the back of a VHS store in the 80s, he succeeded at what his goal is. I'm happy it was marketed as a real horror film, it's way more fun going in expecting one thing and then getting something hilarious.
@scottstuart531
@scottstuart531 2 года назад
@Irontrails RX Yeah that's kind of the point, a studio gave him this much money and he decided to make an extremely obvious campy movie that doesn't just wink at the camera. It's better than nearly all the other big budget b movie style films from recent years because it plays everything straight, which makes it funnier
@scottstuart531
@scottstuart531 2 года назад
@Irontrails RX no, he's just gotten to a point in his career where he doesn't have to play it safe anymore, everything he's made so far has been extremely basic and crowd pleasing. He succeed in what he wanted to make.
@scottstuart531
@scottstuart531 2 года назад
@Irontrails RX That's the thing, the lead actress can act, everything in that film is intentional. Most horror fans actually enjoyed it because unlike this guy they actually picked up on what it's intent was. This is a bad review because he's reviewing it as something it was never intended to be, and he somehow didn't pick up on the clearly obvious ridiculous tone the movie was going for. Its refreshing to see a stupidly fun movie in sea of generic and boring horror, especially from a big studio.

I was one of those who went into the theatre with the expectation of it being a new Conjuring or Insidious. But as it progressed it quickly became apparent that that version of horror was never the intent at all from Wan in this film. And I started to see where it was actually going. That it was meant to just be a movie to just have a blast watching. It all made sense. It is basically an Argento flick crossed with Wans particular brand of fisheyed, very stylized, action sequences. I've seen him do great horror, so I am very sure he knew what he was doing when going for that approach and I was very satisfied at the end (where the film just ends with happy reconciliation, ignoring totally that to everyone investigating the police massacre she has to be either locked up in the Fort Knox of mental Asylums or just get the chair of sparky). I had a blast watching it and that was probably the intent.

@@spinosaurusstriker I see your point in general. But... did he really present a cake as a burrito? In the world of movies, "horror" is a very vague descriptor. There are a number of things a Burrito needs to fulfill to be a burrito and you can very much fault a cake sold as a burrito for not living up to the standards of a burrito. But Suspiria, Malignant, Scary Movie, The Omen, Candyman, The Exorcist, Gremlins... they all qualify as horror even though their intent for the reception may vary wildly between subgenres and specimens. If I went into a James Wan horror flick and got Spy Kids or a compilation special of Golden Girls, ok, I'd probably be more upset. But as it is. He gave us horror, not the kind I thought, but still one I enjoyed. I can't argue about taste. Because neither of ours are better objectively. If someone don't like a film, that's up to them. All I am questioning a bit is the reasoning in the arguments put forth.

@@nicolaszan1845 Oh I didn't even say I disagreed. In fact I think he's spot on. As a writer myself, I'm sick and tired of the amount of plot writing going on today. For 90% of films released nowadays, you could probably make videos longer than the actual films themselves just addressing every problem and plothole. It's ridiculous. I can't enjoy a film, especially a horror film which rests on the stakes and tension being high, if I get distracted by the ''Fucking hell what a moron'' moments every sequence. Those moments where something or usually someone is just being an illogical dumbass because if they're not, the story wouldn't continue. If it was made this way intentionally, then fair play. But for that $40M budget and some otherwise genuinely creepy and unsettling designs and ideas, I very much doubt it is.

@@TheStraightestWhitest James Wan has proven before that he is a competent writer and director, and since I don't actually know of any controversy surrounding the production or writing of the movie (like, say, writing or story conflicts) I'll assume that the intention was, in fact, to make it that way intentionally. Mistakes like the ones in the movie are too amateur to come from a script he was supposedly happy with. I think it's more so a homage to the 80's movies for the nostalgia, while at the same time trying to play into the stereotypes of those movies. Movies that are known to be formulaic, over the top, "kooky", where the characters act in less than intelligent ways. I will admit i despised the movie The Tenant if I remember its name correctly- pretty sure it was a giallo or done by Roman Polanski? Anyways, that movie was trying to be so artsy and I hated it, I personally thought there was better ways of representing the character going nutty besides boring drawn out sequences of shots that I quite frankly almost fell asleep to. Correct me if The Tenant is not considered giallo, but I think there are other good ones like Suspiria, again if thats specifically giallo i am not sure but I think its Italian?? Anyways, I can see where this movie had that but I feel like the tone shift is a bit abrupt and I guessed the plot pretty easily. I may have really hated it because I had covid when I watched it at home though. The movie seemed like it could be fun but I have my own limits if cheesy-ness, if it exceeds it like this movie did with the “campy” scenes, then it usually just makes me roll my eyes or just want to turn a movie off. I guess I need to rewatch it and see if covid made me not enjoy it at all. Hope my rant makes sense.

I'd argue this isn't even a horror movie. Like the writers must of understood that showing your monster just having a badass fight scene against cops is not scary, it's something from a superhero movie or The Matrix. I feel this movie gives you the facade of a horror at the very start and quickly just becomes a mystery action thriller. It's not about being scared, it's about figuring out what is going on. Also, I'd say 85% of the time I don't give a fuck about ANY characters in ANY horror movie. This may be because the writing is shitty or it might be because I know these people will die. While I agree that having characters I want to live would make the tension rise, I think saying this movie is a bad horror because the characters suck makes it sound like the majority of good horror have likable or relatable characters which are few and far between.

Or was this a studio contracted deal he was obligated to make and he didn’t care? Or was he trying to go for campy horror a la Sam Raimi? We may never know. But one thing’s for sure. The production designer either had no clue how to match exteriors with interiors or each was done by a different person who never met the other. Exterior: it’s a cute two-story Victorian. Interior: it’s a flipping mansion! Exterior: it’s a police station. Interior: it’s a nightclub filled with furniture! @creativedesignation7880
@creativedesignation7880 3 года назад
Less than a million? I mean yeah, it's not a good movie, but have you seen the sets, the vfx work, the actors? For comparison The Blair Witch Project, which was made several percentages of inflation ago, was made with 3 paid actors, had literal bundles of sticks as props, no costume or make-up department and was filmed in the woods still cost $60.000. Of course a movie that uses well over a dozen actors, several sets with tons of props, uses practical and digital effects, has fights scenes, needs stunt people, hired someone to perform all the killer's movements backwards etc, etc can't be made for less than a million. Bad movie does not equal low budget, that's neither how movies work, nor how money works.

I think you got caught up in the movie's advertising as a serious horror and ended up criticizing it through that optic alone. Except the movie is thriller, action, mistery, and gore with some horror elements here and there. And it's not meant to be taken seriously. Its faults are irrelevant to the movie's core goal - to entertain. It's supposed to be mindless fun and it achieves that extremely well. Watch it with this in mind and your whole perception of the movie will change. I see this becoming a cult classic.

@@nestormelendez9005 You've clearly never seen a giallo film. This film pays homage to that genre, as well as shock horror of the '80s and even Wan's own earlier films, like Dead Silence, which was also cheesy. It's called camp. It's obviously a competently made film, technically, and Wan has made only Blockbusters until this point, so he obviously knows what he's doing. This was a deliberately outrageous, over-the-top, ridiculous, cheesy movie.

11:58 Counter example: Although not a horror movie perse (and not quite as over the top), the original Terminator directed by James Cameron proves you can provide the perspective of both the monster/antagonist and the victim/protagonist and still evoke a sense of dread in the audience.

@Allie Maci the reason the killer was scaring her husband in the beginning is quite simple. He wanted to disorient him before going in for the kill. Remember he wasn't at full strength yet, he had only just be reawaken after decades, and she was recovering from the blow to her head, that's why she didn't even get a vision of the murder. By disorienting the husband, who was already shown to be much stronger than his wife, it became easier to land the killing blow.
