The word "mallard" may be in reference to any male duck, but for the purposed of this video we're specifically focusing on the mallard species - aka Anas platyrhynchos. These are some of the most widespread ducks in the world and may be some of the most well-known waterfowl. Mallards display sexual dimorphism because the females appear in browns and greys while the males look completely different with their green heads and curly black tails. Mallards are generalists when it comes to eating, so they'll eat just about anything they can, including handouts from humans. In some ways, this has led people to say mallards domesticated themselves, however, these ducks are believed to be the ancestors of nearly all domestic duck species.
Scientific Name: Anas platyrhynchos
Range: worldwide except Antarctica
Size:
-wingspan: 3 feet (91cm)
-weight: 2.5 pounds (1.1kg)
Diet: seeds, insects, aquatic vegetation, etc.
Lifespan: 25+ years

Hello Animal Fact Files, thank you both so much for the excellent video on Mallards. Hey I was wondering if you wouldn't mind doing a video on Black Bellied Ducks? I've got a lake behind my house and we have ton of Black Bellied Ducks that call our lake home. And I currently have a momma and papa duck that have 5 babies and both parents are involved in raising the ducklings and they are the best, most attentive and protective parents. It's amazing that they managed to raise all 5 from hatching to fledge without losing a single one. Especially when compared with the Muscovy ducks who have a bunch of babies and lose about 90% in the first week..

There are also a black duck which is a mallard just all black. Also a blonde mallard which is all yellow. I’ve hunted black ducks, and have seen a blonde mallard in illinois before. Skunks are also one of the leading duck egg killers.

Fun fact. It is physically impossible for mallard drakes to quack due to the fact that the male and female syrinx is shaped differently.

Well, male ducks do have a louder call and it is similar to the quack but it's quite easy to tell apart.

Mallard drakes do a raspy grunt it sounds nothing like a quack. It’s physically impossible for them to quack due to the fact that the male and female syrinx are shaped differently.

If you shouldn't feed it to mallards, which animals can you feed leftover bread to?

I think some farmers feed their pigs/goats leftovers like that - but personally I would probably compost it 😄
