Malone Park, How much does it cost to live in Belfast's most exclusive residential street?

Today we visit the Malone Road, a leafy and affluent suburb of south Belfast, and specifically the most exclusive residential street in Belfast, Malone Park. It even comes with a gate lodge at either end.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

We walk the 1km length of this private road in this video, which is gated at either end. In fact, the gates at the bottom end on the Lisburn Road side, as you’ll see, are kept locked so as to stop traffic using the road as a thoroughfare. So vehicular access is only from the Malone Road and therefore is strictly for residence only. These beautiful houses admittedly look modest enough from the path, but extend quite far back, others have separate dwellings or grannie flats on the same plot, and others are just nothing short of mansions. It’s a very exclusive area. The street even has its own website, which you must log into to access.
So, who lives here. Well, people who earn a lot of money. Wikipedia cites Lady Dixon (who gave her name to a large parkland not far from here) as being a previous resident. Also, Sir George Clark 1st baronet (I have to confess to having no idea what a first baronet does - not very much I suspect) and David Wilson Smyth, the high Sheriff of Down (that sounds like quite an occupation). Wikipedia describes the street as traditionally being the home to wealthy Protestants, though it now considers it a mixed area. Such is the changing demographic of Belfast.
The beautiful trees that line the avenue are Lime trees and I imagine the residents in the street must pay for the upkeep of this impressive road as well as the trees and verges along it. That can’t be cheap.
Recently Belfast Council approved a plan to extend and renovate one of the houses in the street. This was to include a new garage, parking space, alterations to the driveway and new entrance gates and pillars. Planning was approved, but it was fought all the way by objectors. People who live here do not like change in their immediate environment. Actually, it’s designated a conservation area.
Just looking at these lovely houses from the road, you can see that some have their own tennis courts, I’d imagine some must have swimming pools and most, considering how close we are to the city centre, have an amazing amount of space around them. The architecture is mostly Victorian, although there are a couple of new builds and some house that are influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Because of the large amount of open space, these trees and the area in general seems to be a haven for squirrels. You see a lot of them around here. I think if I were a squirrel I’d move in here too.
Everything just looks so well kept and the autumn leaves make it all the more beautiful, though I’ve noticed that you sometimes see gardeners out on the road with leaf blowers.
In Belfast house prices are relatively low compared to other major cities in Ireland and the UK, but I think you’d be talking about a minimum of £2 million plus for most of these houses and I hate to estimate what that upper end of the market might yield.
It’s such a lovely place for a walk, particularly at this time of year, in Autumn with the leaves crunching underfoot. Actually, people often walk their dogs up here and you get the occasional jogger too.
Please let me know in the comments if you walk in the street, or perhaps you own one of the houses here or know someone who does, we’d love to hear from you.
It’s interesting sometimes to see the fleets of cars outside these houses too. No bangers. Ranger Rovers and German executive cars, and maybe the one-off smaller car belonging to the teenage children? You’ll notice people don’t seem to park on the road itself. I wonder if that’s actively discouraged.
The Lisburn Road up ahead, that we’ll be emerging onto, unlike the Malone Road is a very busy area populated by retail outlets and businesses, which is probably why they keep the gates closed at this end.
If you want to live here, start saving, and I’ll see you very soon in the next Naked Ireland video.

I passed Malone Park many times as a child growing up in Belfast without ever venturing down it. It has that quiet, established, mysterious air of 'old money', almost a sense of trespass in being there unless you live there.

Couldn't agree more Lester, you don't feel encouraged to walk down, but do it anyway, it's nice sometimes to see how the other half live, if at other times frustrating!

Hi Sean, The Malone Road is from the Irish Maigh Lón meaning ‘plain of lambs'. I can only suppose that lambs grazed there in the past lending the road, first it’s Irish, and then its English name.

I can tell you from first hand experience of working inside quite a few of those houses over the last 30 years, the owners expect a bit more and beyond for your services, and for that they wouldn't even give you a sausage. You see some amazing decor and interior fittings, but I never found the owners to be any happier than a 3 up 2 down house in a decent area!

Interesting music which kind of lends an air of mistique to the area. When I come over to Ireland, I'll check it out for a walk, when I'm in Belfast.

Beautifully shot! Great time of the year to show off what is a special place. There must be some very rare trees and plants collected over the years by past owner's. I do have a story passed on to me by my brother's. They and a few friends, all from Andytown, snuck in for a look. While hiding in a bush they watched a woman in a big fur coat, walking her poodle. The dog stopped and did its business, and the lady bent down and with a paper hankie , wiped its bum and walked on!!! 😂

My uncle bought No.26 (The Limes) in 1967 for the princely sum of £6,000. It was mainly derelict at that time, having previously operated as a nursing home. After renovating it over the years, he sold it in 1982 for somewhat more than the purchase price.

We have a "Royal" street like that in London which (like Malone Road) not many tourists get out to explore. When you're in London check it out. It's associated with Princess Diana. Start beside the Royal Garden Hotel which is at the end of Kensington High Street (near the tube station). Turn up into the leafy Kensington Palace Road. Pass the gate house check point (like in Malone Road). Then you've got huge mansions all the way, including Kensington Palace (where Diana lived with the rogue you're familiar with today.!!). At the end, you'll past through an historic arch, and just like Malone Road, you enter a busy commercial road, Notting Hill. Immediately opposite is café Diana where Diana used to go for coffee when she wanted a break from the palace (she was as down to earth as you and me). I know the manager there and there are photos of him with Diana on the wall. Yiu can sit outside on the terrace, if you like, and watch the occasional limousines exiting the palace road opposite that you've just walked up. So, like Malone Road, there are lots of places tourists don't get to discover, simply because they haven't been following your channel. Let that be a lesson to all.! (P. S. don't expect to meet Charles, but you never know.!)

My friend John Shephard and I both went to school at St.Patrick’s on the Ballinderry Road in Lisburn, we’re both 43 and our final year in that school was 1996. His Dad used to own all the Budget DIYs and they live around here, next to Curley Kennedy also 👍

I know someone that lived in Malone Park and they were still as sad, miserable and depressed as anyone else can be. Money doesn't make you happy it just means you have more money to throw at your problems.

Reminds me of Shrewsbury Road in Dublin 4. Where the haves live. Mainly members of the wealthy Protestant Ascendancy, although many of the properties are now Embassies and consulates. I note the absence of sectarian paraphernalia as found in working class areas of Belfast, the residents obviously feel safe and secure. The common or garden cars probably belong to the maids and gardners.
