Thank you for the video. I know the Asian style is faster and for war, but I enjoy better now the Mediterranean style. It's more accurate and smooth, like for hunting.

Hi Armin, Why your preference for using Mediterranean style release rather than three fingers under the arrow? Also wondered if you could consider doing a short video on arrows? -... Any info on your preferences - wood/carbon, spine /weight etc especially for low poundage bows; makes that are affordable; fletchings .... This could be especially helpful for folks new to archery and people like myself who have been shooting a short while and really want to improve.Bought two Flagella youth twin bows after seeing your review on them - they are fantastic!Many thanks!!

Armin, are there any significant advantages to the Mediterranean draw over thumb release? I grew up on the Mediterranean technique - I am just now trying thumb release (which I like better because it seems to be smoother) - and only still use it for the sake of variety when the bow requires it (e.g. my Bear recurve which has an arrow shelf on the left). Can you think of any ways or circumstances in which the Mediterranean draw is superior?
@ArminHirmer
@ArminHirmer 5 лет назад
many say it is easier to learn and easier to be more accurate - but that simply because you have the arrow on the bow better in sight. I don't see any advantage.
@tundrafunk7402
@tundrafunk7402 5 лет назад
Armin Hirmer I have found this to be very true for me. I’m trying not to let this dissuade me from my thumb release practice though. It is nice to switch to Mediterranean for a few shots. This will likely be how I hunt grouse until I have become more proficient aiming with thumb release.

Question about hand flipping back in thumb draw, like in Kyudo or some horsearchery videos. Is there a purpose for that? Saw Lukas Novotny for example throwing his draw hand back quite forcefully.
@ArminHirmer
@ArminHirmer 7 лет назад
In Kyodo it is more a form factor and the follow through ending back tension. Does not increase arrow speed. Lucas and many other horseback archers do it more for the sake of being balanced and maybe increase the speed of the arrow.

The anchor point is the corner of the mouth, that I understand. Yet I see a lot of peoples touching the corner of the mouth with the index finger not the middle finger. Which is correct and what would be the difference? I use the middle finger, not the index, as I like the arrow to be slightly higher and also the middle finger is a tad longer that the index finger. Thank you for your instructive videos!
@ArminHirmer
@ArminHirmer 2 года назад
I guess there is no right or wrong, just what works for you. I feel it more natural with the middle finger

+Armin Hirmer I have a very short draw length with a 3 finger draw till the corner of my mouth is their any way i can extend my my draw length (historically correct method) while still using the 3 finger draw ?
@ArminHirmer
@ArminHirmer 7 лет назад
Hello Mohamed. You can use the medieval chest draw with 3 fingers, you can put the arrow on the other side and shoot with slavic release (still 3 fingers) check my video about that - and draw to your chest or earlobe then.
@ryddragyn
@ryddragyn 7 лет назад
Armin is a decent guy but in this case I do not agree with his advice. Having a very short draw length myself (he does not), I feel I am better qualified to answer from personal experience. A while back, the members of my club got together, and we compared draw lengths, then we all stood back to back to compare wingspan, and we also looked at the length of our arm sections. What we realized was that while the upper arm is very similar between people of the same height, the forearm length is highly variable. Someone 2 inches shorter than me had much longer forearms, and as a result had a longer draw length. A very "standard" anchor point to the corner of the mouth was also very natural for him. The goal of the anchor is to have the arrow aligned with the arrow at full draw so you are holding with skeletal support and little muscle energy. So if that does not happen with the finger at the corner of the mouth, simply pull back further and use your thumb behind your ear. That is what I do and it works better for the alignment when one has short forearms. The corner of the mouth is NOT one size fits all! If after doing that it is not long enough of a draw, just do a warbow draw like the english guys do. Mark Stretton has some good advice on getting consistent using hand contact to the side of the face: markstretton.blogspot.com/2015/04/arrow-hand-ii-establishing-anchor-point.html Note how that is a draw to the neck and shoulder area, NOT the chest. I would also strongly discourage the slavic draw the way Armin does it.
