Aside from holding thousands of books spanning hundreds of years, the national library is home to a historic Magna Carta document by King Alfonso V detailing the story of Monroe, the oldest version of the Maltese dictionary by Gian Frangisk Agius de Soldanis, and Malta's oldest history book, written by Maltese historian Giovanni Francesco Abela and published in 1647.
