On Monday 29 July Vigolo Vattaro, a hamlet of just over two thousand inhabitants in the Italian municipality of the Vigolana plateau, in the province of Trento, woke up under a flow of stones and mud. The bad weather that hit the area on the evening of Sunday 28 July, in the town of Prà dei Laresi on the northern slope of the Vigolana, caused a detachment that affected the entire slope, with blocks up to one meter in diameter. "It was raining heavily then I heard a terrible noise, I looked out on the balcony and saw a waterfall of mud and stones" says a resident, who, together with his neighbors, is armed with shovels and boots. With the help of civil protection teams, the inhabitants of the hamlet freed the first floors and basements of the buildings from the mud accumulated after the heavy rainfall. "Yesterday there was a real storm, with 40 millimeters of rain falling in half an hour, around 80 in an hour. It was a storm cell that developed precisely in this area. We also had another similar event in municipality of Trento" explains Stefano Fait, general manager of the Civil Protection, Forestry and Wildlife Department of the autonomous province of Trento.
