Day 4!!!
My goal was to get outside the city, but as with most of my goals. That was a failure haha.
Started the day off with Chee Cheong Fun, a Chinese influenced dish composed of rice rolls and covered in sauce! Really fun to eat for a nice little snack!
Next, I went to an Uncle who has been making Curry Mee for over 40 years. His expertise and special chili paste and coconut really shines through in this bowl of curry mee.
Still out in the middle of nowhere, I went for a family run Briyani Stall that is making over 25 dishes to pile over your rice. A truly fantastic Bamboo Briyani from a family that is pouring their hearts into this dish.
Back into the city for some Mee Sotong. This stuff is what sauced up truly means. Some of the most flavor packed, saucy, fried noodles I have eaten. The food Gods were with me as I got one of the last orders before they left for Friday prayer!
Lastly, a really fun dessert to eat, putu Mayong. Rice flour squeezed into the shape of noodles and steamed. Then topped with double sugar and shredded coconut. The actual Mayong is silky smooth while the sugar and coconut help enhance the flavor and melt in your mouth qualities.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just a guy from Arkansas chasing his dreams of traveling the world, meeting amazing people, and trying all the delicious food I can find!
Recently finished working in Hong Kong. I am from a small farm in the states, I am now taking advantage and the opportunities I have to travel the world in search of some of the most delicious foods, unique places, and friendliest people.
A lover of street food, good laughs, and learning about other cultures. I hope to indulge in all these things and more as I bring you along with me on my epic journeys.

Better late than never. Sorry for the delay everybody, been on a bus with no WIFI for 19 hours. Also, in my video I think I wrote "Putu Mayang". There are two correct ways: Putu Mayam and Putu Mayong. I seemed to have combined the both, sorry about that. Connect with me other places! Don't be apologetic about the mis-spelling... The spirit of Malaysian food is to mix up different ingredients from various cultural influences... And despite the common names of the food that you are familiar with, each community and each locale may give the dishes a different name... For example, laksa means different dish depending on where you are... So, it's perfectly ok to mess up the names a little...
@Macoi24
@Macoi24 5 лет назад
@@dennisyap2143 Hey, I really appreciate that! I just don't think anybody spells it "mayang" so I wanted to clarify for people who may want to research it more and learn more. That way they wouldn't be confused! Really appreciate your comment!

In English we called them string hoppers... the usual way is to eat with brown sugar and shredded coconut.. but it also can be eaten with curried lentils (dhall) or even any variety of curries (eg: chicken curry, fish curry).. it’s delish!

Max, you eat like a local! The chee cheon fun that you had at Genting cafe is another version prepared with peanut sauce. The authentic Penang version is prepared with prawn paste. Recommend that you try chee cheong fun at the Jelutong morning market stall for your next Penang visit, the sauce mixture is superb. I have tried several versions of Ipoh chee cheong fun, none can compare with Penang version. Most Penangites will insist the version with prawn paste is the best!

Max, I love the way you rhyme BRIYANI, BRIYANI, BRIYANI. Wow how privileged Asians are to savour the best of best, when it comes to FOOD. Here in the west, the Indian restaurants can get away for serving crappy BRIYANI. Most of the restaurants are run by Pakistanis or Bangladeshis. They stir fry briyanis to the order with plain boiled rice with sauce, chicken and plenty of red carcinogenic dye. To the horror of horrors they charge 115 Malaysian ringgit or 25 euros for garbage briyanis and can get away with murder. Max, thanks for a mouthwatering food spree.

As you eat in Malaysia, you will notice that the food gets nicer as you move North and better value... When it comes to chee cheong fun, I think Malaysia is one of those places where you can find a few styles... In Penang they eat with shrimp paste, in KL-JB they eat with fish paste, fish balls as side dishes... The closest to HK style is in Ipoh... But for me, the best way to eat chee cheong fun is to buy good fresh ones from the wet market and serve with soy sauce and sesame oil... Also, good choice eating briyani with your hand... I know it may sound weird but I love the smell of the fragrant spices on my hand for the next 2h after a great briyani

not weird at all I know what you mean. Yes, CCF seems to be a little different all over Malaysia forsure!
@sue7014

Yes so many ways of eating CCF & yours is the simple one which is also great. Actually there are more foods in Penang, like the grilled cuttlefish, fried oysters with eggs, loh mee, lam mee, etc

Hi Max - welcome to Penang! did you manage to try Joez Coconut Jelly while you were in the Timesquare georgetown vicinity? It's unique to Penang due to their secret technique to make the jelly without any gelatin or agar agar!

Yummy experience! Love how you slurp up that curry mee! And you've the gift of the gab! Chee cheong fun in my childhood was mostly unrolled so the rice noodles would soak up the sauce + deep fried shallots. Nowadays, the rolled versions are commonplace, similar to that of Singapore... Maybe 1 step less work for the vendor. Max, I gotta say, I really enjoy your videos and so did friends and family to whom I forwarded these. I rarely watch RU-vid and when I do, it's only for a few mins when winding down for the day and almost never watch foodie videos that last longer than 3mins. Yours is an exception!! Plus I've never interacted with anyone on RU-vid, ever. So, another thumbs up for you!! Looking forward to your 5th video. Safe journey wherever you are!
@Macoi24
@Macoi24 5 лет назад
Ayyyyyyyyyy, well happy you could make an exception for my videos:) Actually my goal is to shorten my videos. I just like quick short videos. I think they are more fun!! Yeah, I saw some locals unrolling, but my "pinch" method was working pretty well hahaha in Hong Kong they were always rolled. Thank you for sharing the videos, really means a lot!

@@Macoi24 don't cut them too short though! There's a warm authenticity and cleverness through "enticement to eat" in your presentations so far... There's a guy (Mark Wiens of Migrationology) who is hugely popular. He's been doing this for ages and his videos are typically up to 30 mins long (too long for me but not for others). Because I am a bit of a health freak (run, hike and swim almost daily) and eat fruits, buckwheat groats, oats & veggies for breakfast and lunch(4 days a week), but eat meat, all carbs etc at all other meals, my burning question is, how do you eat all that in a day and not get fat?😂 Maybe all that walking helps! Hawker food consumption is for me strictly curtailed, much as I love curry mee, mamak etc etc!😋😂 Cheers!
@Macoi24
@Macoi24 5 лет назад
@@sue-lynyeoh8137 Oh, I won't make them too short. But If I do make them shorter I would have 2-3 videos per week. I just like a really fast and fun paced video as it goes better with my personality. Hmmm, I do workout whenever I can as I am very fond of working out for my mental health. But typically when I am not in Malaysia I eat a lot of veggies and usually eat leaner meals with more spices as opposed to fried foods. I have always enjoyed more of a spiciness compared to fatty foods. However, I do have a sweet tooth haha But mainly just stay active each and every day so around 15,000 steps every day plus a workout. I don't think people realize how much I move haha
