They were the first group to debut under RBW so they had no money they did their own choreography , make-up and styling they also promoted their songs on the street. I don't think their CEO believes that they aren't pretty but he knew what other people gonna think because of the crazy beauty standards but look at them now ❤
the standards are insane. I didnt even realise until recently that there's a whole list of stuff to tick off like double eyelids, a small face and a v chin etc etc etc and as long as you dont hit the list, it doesnt matter if you're well balanced overall or not, you're considered "not pretty".
It's like unwritten rule anyway, they prioritize talents and skill after looks. Visual is top priority. Just like the group that recently debuted, all they talk about is about how pretty they are, when they're not wearing makeup, how they look before they debut, etc (most of time). Like cmon they're more than just how they look.
The street performances in promoting their music is special because NOT ALL GIRL GROUPS GO THROUGH THAT. Girl groups that come from bigger companies have the machinery to promote their girls mainstream and not taste performing in the street for a few people. Mamamoo really went through that because they come from a small company that has little budget and a small influence compared to big companies that have a bigger say in television channels on who could appear, so all the mamamoo fans today are products of alternative ways of promotion, I remember this was somehow similar to how BTS did it through social media and they themselves being promo boys of their own concerts.
RBW told them the sad truth of reality in the kpop industry that they're not pretty enough as an idol and they don't fit the Korean beauty standard. The girls even got rejected by many companies just simply because they don't fit those beauty standard, only RBW at the end that accepted and debuted them as a group together. Their company sort of kinda gave them the motivation on how to survive in these tough industry and and gave them the insight that some people might even look them down because of that.
Oh gosh, I might cry during this. I was so late to the Mamamoo fandom. I knew about Mamamoo prior but my first official comeback was Gogobebe. My only regret was I didn't become a fan sooner but i'm so grateful to be here now.
Yea imagine being in my shoes lol my first comeback is actually gonna be Wheein’s solo (which is low key perfect actually) what was I doing for these 7 years?!
@@SinghReacts I... I got into MMM (including KPOP, since I'm totally not into idols of any kind) through videos on TikTok. I saw and fell in love with the girls' relationship with each other, and had to find out who they are. Heard their first song and fell down the radish hole. 💛❤️💙🤍
13:54 the girl who holding the cake is Ji Eun of Purple Kiss. Oneus and Onewe are also there joining other trainees to make a surprise for Mamamoo. Unless I'm mistaken, Onewe Kanghyun & Cya play guitar that time 🤩
Just a little trivia, during their debut stage (mr. Ambiguous) only 3 people went to support them 1 is a family member and the other 2 are friends. But now they're one of the biggest idol group in the industry.
During the 2010-2014, in kpop idol standards, the women weren’t “pretty” enough. There was almost a template for girl groups back then (even now but not as much). These women were and are BEAUTIFUL, but the standards for a girl group were so different 💔
I remember hearing in an interview that Big Bang and BTS were also told they weren't good looking enough when they first came out. The beauty standards aren't gender specific, if you're not good looking they say "Oh you must be really good at singing" - actually happened on a tv show to Eunkwang from BToB.
from 3 persons in their debut stage to all kill in every single concert. Mamamoo are four talented, strong, confident, and kind women. Are an amazing example of hard work. Hope now you understand a little bit more about them and you love them too. Thanks for the reaction :)
(i'm so sorry for the lengthy posts I just need to vent out LMAO!!!) Update: I cried like a toddler 😂😂😂. One thing that was left out in this video which made me respect Mamamoo even more is how small their company was. They weren't recognized so they weren't invited to a lot of stage performances when they debuted so they resorted to busking to promote the group. Busking is basically street performances in busy areas with portable speakers, mics and a temporary movable stage. In Korea, they have very spacey streets that cars go through during the day but becomes a whole market/performance field during the night. The phrase "started from the bottom" applies to them very literally. I love these girls with all my heart and I am so proud of them as a casual viewer. They're trully an inspiration. I'll go back to sobbing for a few more minutes now 😂
1: The company probably meant that they weren't pretty enough but the CEO has supported Mamamoo a lot so I think he just wanted them to try harder. Korea has really defined beauty standards and they're very blunt about telling people to their faces if they're fat/ugly. Personally, I think Mamamoo is unconventionally beautiful which makes them extra attractive to me. 2: 21:28 In a year almost 100 Kpop groups debut. Most of them fade into oblivion and you have to understand that senior's side, maybe he had a bad day. In the end, he did invite them to his concert so all in all, I don't get why this video is vilifying him. 3: Almost every group that isn't from the Big 3 companies: YG, JYP, SM, and now Big Hit as well, gets pretty rough treatment until they gain some amount of fame. That's just how the industry works.
Yeah that’s definitely true for most groups that they get disrespected by others if they’re not from the big 3 but it’s still true that the older you are the more power you have in Korean society so they could still mistreat those who are younger. The example they gave isn’t necessarily disrespect but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have bad experiences with seniors
Their contract finishes in two months. Solar and Moonbyul renewed their contracts in January, while Hwasa renewed her contract last month but Wheein has yet to do so and is still in talks with management. She has said in the past that she is not comfortable being an idol and she feels underappreciated. Last month RBW publicly stated that Mamamoo will not disband and they are having positive talks with Wheein. I don't think Mamamoo will disband either but I'm worried Wheein won't renew her contract, especially since I and every MooMoo thought as soon as Hwasa renewed, Wheein would have too. Maybe it all depends on how well Wheein's solo mini album does. I can't see her not being in Mamamoo or leaving Hwasa.
let wheein choose the best for her. its her career. as fans, we just have to support whatever she'll choose, we should trust her choice. ofc we all want mamamoo together but we don't have any idea what does actually wheein's feel and want. you can see rbw setting this up, putting wheein under this stressful situation IN THE MIDDLE of her comeback. fuck rbw. i hope mamamoo girlies could leave from that shitty company forever.
I love Ggomo's reaction to Wheein during her solo. Cats are always keeping their humans humble. I've never heard anything else about the CEO that gives me the impression he told them that out of malice, seemed more like he warned them that's what the tabloids would be saying.
Been following Mamamoo for almost 3 years now, the only regret is that I didn't get into them sooner. I wish I can go back to 2014 and support their debut.
RBW was just telling them the facts of life as an idol. We now see four beautiful, world-class artists and it's easy to think that they're naturals who were guaranteed to succeed from the start and that anyone would pick them out of a crowd of lesser talented girls but that's simply not the case. Kpop trainees all have a certain level of talent but when companies assemble a group their looks and how the girls fit into whatever marketing concept is chosen for the group's image (cute, innocent, girl crush, etc) play a major role in deciding who gets chosen. For RBW as a brand new startup label to debut a girl group in 2014 based on talent rather than appearance was unheard of and at a pre-debut industry showcase everyone told Kim Dohoon that Mamamoo would fail miserably. All the members had failed multiple auditions before RBW plucked them from the reject pile. Wheein & Moonbyul had come the closest to debuting at another company but when that didn't work out they went back to square one and had to audition again until RBW signed them. Solar had failed over 40 auditions because she was thought to be too old and you already know that Hwasa had failed auditions because she was considered fat and ugly. Hwasa also has a darker skin tone than idols typically have and she's never fit the cute, skinny and girly idol image that's still the standard in kpop. So RBW was simply being honest by advising them to focus on their strengths because when they debuted Mamamoo had everything stacked against them other than their talent as singers, their skill as dancers, their charisma as performers and everything they brought to the table behind the scenes - their extreme work ethic even by kpop's outrageous standards and their creative involvement in all aspects of their career from songwriting, arranging and choreography to styling and MV concepts. At the beginning they didn't even have the thing that has become one of their biggest strengths and is what I believe to be the secret sauce that has propelled them from being a good idol group to the highest tier of performing artists - the creative synergy produced by their bond as best friends. While MMM were rookies they were asked to rate themselves in 5 categories on a pie chart: singing, performing, individuality, popularity and beauty. They maxed out the first three categories and ignored the last two but I've always thought Solar was prophetic when she told the interviewer that popularity and beauty would come with time if they focused on the other three. Popularity can grow over time but beauty? It's like she knew they would come to be seen as beautiful when people got to know them through how they expressed themselves as women and artists and that they would achieve the goal Hwasa set when she told herself if she didn't fit this generation's standard of beauty then she'd become her own standard.
Yea that was kinda my point when I was saying it was easy for me to say now that they’re amazing and deserve all the fame and acclaim they get now from the very start. I do believe it mostly served as motivation for the girls to be the best vocalists and performers of their generation
Don't tell the girls they made it they'll tell you no yet. They are still looked down on from lots of other companies. They were even on a show by JYP but he didn't even feel guilty when the company turn down three of the six members B1A4
7:28 Getting a win is really important because that open the door to be invitated in variety shows and be most know. A lot of groups in their carrer never get a win or pass a lot of time to get it. An example of that can be Brave Girls 20:32 Don't misunderstend. The company says that for Korean standars they are not enough "pretty" so they have to demostrate that they are artist and that could be possible with hard work
One of the things i hate is that some people say Hwasa is the only one doing well or make more money/attention, which 100% false. They all are successful and are successful soloist. It's just Hwasa gets more publicity but that's what she wants to do. Wheein would rather stay behind the scenes but still top charts without promoting. Solar and Moon also do a lot of activities..but Hwasa just get out there more. In fact Moon sold more copies of her album then Hwasa...100,000 copies along which made her the no#1 selling artist in 2020. Solar sold close to 80,000 making her 2nd best selling artist.Wheein is just coming out with her album this April, but her singles still top charts. Hwasa 4th best selling artist sold 48,000 copies, but she still top 13 countries on itunes the first asian artist to do so. Yet people just think that just Hwasa is doing it. All 3 members were best selling artist in 2020 as soloist (except wheein she didn't have an album) ALL ARE SUCCESSFUL ESPECIALLY IN THEIR OWN WAY. Also let's not forget Solar successful youtube channel.
One thing i like to point out the agency didn't say they weren't pretty in a bad way more so in a realistic way because of Korea beauty standard. Most idol groups were, still do, made based off looks. Majority of groups only have that one or two main vocalist while the others are made up of dancers and looks. That's were that whole "visual" crap come from. One example, a fan commented that they didn't like Mamamoo at first because they were ugly. But listened to BP because they were pretty. This is how it is in the K industry. The culture itself chooses what group to lile based off of looks. And MMM is not pretty in the Korean standard. They are looked upon as ugly or average. So their label was telling them how their society was going to see them. Which they were right i read so many hate and "they're ugly" comments especially with Hwasa. She is considered fat in Korea. Solar told she's too old when she was only 22, while auditioning with other companies. Moon was told she was fat as well before debuting and went on a strict diet. Point is RBW was the only ine that took a chance on them and told them.up front you are not going to be seen as pretty so put on good performances use your voice to win the public over and show your true self. And that's what they did and it worked. Their own CEO encouraged the girls to continue to be their loud chaotic self. Whereas other companies te their groups to tone it down and basically be robots...MMM was allowed to just be themselves.
They ARE and always were,.. THE BEST OF THE BEST!! Nobody brings the house down like Mamamoo. however, the crazy wild energy they have hosting TV shows & other appearances,... I have no words,... truly chaotic, but fun.
I love all your reactions so much, especially your Mamamoo and Dreamcatcher ones because they are my ultimate fave groups! It is so much fun to follow your journey of these two groups. It always gives me joy seeing a new reaction in my sub box! I don't know if you take requests for other groups and I don't wanna be disrespectful commenting on another vid but I just thought I would take a shot (feel free to ignore lol) Next to Mamamoo the other two groups I absolutely adore are Kard and Oneus! I saw you already reacted to Onewe and Oneus is their brother group, so under RBW just like Mamamoo. They are crazy talented and I think you would enjoy them! If you would consider reacting to them I would suggest: Oneus - Vakyrie (their debut) Oneus - Twilight (1st comeback) Oneus - Lit (2nd comeback) For Kard, they are a co-ed group consisting of two male and two female members! Here I would suggest: Kard - Don't Recall (Pre-Debut) Kard - Rumor (Pre-Debut) Kard - Oh NaNa (Pre-Debut) Kard - Hola Hola (Debut) Sorry for the long comment 😅
HI , there is a video explaining what is consider to be a idol in gg in korea, they should have v sharp face, double eyelip, pale white skin, skinny etc, wheein and Hwasa was invited on a variety show call "come back home" lately, visiting their small rooftop house in which 4 of them lived when they were trainees coz lack of $ to rent a place. Love and respect them, how hard they have to work and adhere to in order to fulfill their dream ?
The company meant it when they said they “weren’t pretty enough”. Not to diss them. The company wasn’t putting them down or attacking their looks. It was just a fact that for the kpop industry, as idols, our girls weren’t considered “pretty” based on the standard. That’s why they got rejected a lot before in other companies, e.g. Hwasa often failing auditions not because of her voice but coz of “her looks”. RBW took them in because according to them they were judging auditions based on talent, not looks. They worked really well so that people will see why Mamamoo deserve to be idols. Frankly, I’m quite thankful to RBW. If not for them, we wouldn’t have these genuine super talented queens, who are in reality, beautiful inside and out. AND who are inspiring other women that they don’t need to fit a mold; that it’s better to embrace who they truly are, because that’s beautiful too.
I don't know where I read it but I remember that "you're the best" was supposed to be the girl's last chance in being a group. because they came from a small company and that mamamoo was their first group, it would have been hard to let them continue without getting any achievements. so them winning was a miracle
I am really thankful I get to know mamamoo. The only thing i regret is i knew them a bit late. If I were with them since debut, i will give them my full support and love.
And this video made me reinforce that yep, mamamoo is my spirit animal, and i just love this girls so much. So talented and they definitively need more recognition. Oh and of course once you dive in the mamamoo spiral youll never come out. You are doomed my friend in the god way. New suscriber
Hi there, Brandon! I was so down these past days, but I still watch your MMM contents, even though i don't get to comment on your videos. If you want another remarkable thing about their journey, you can check out 'When Mamamoo lip-synced for the first time since debut' by by resonance. :) they're really remarkable queens!! 💚💚💚
Your videos helped actually. Thank you 🤗💚 I'm trying my best to get to you in Patreon so that i could also view your other live reaction videos and at the same time help you. :)
Am glad their company see talent than visual if not there is no mamamoo.and through a years they just let them flow with their own carisma.it good to see artist do whatever they want not always follow the rules.
Mamamoo is going to have a liveshow on may 1th !!! Look at their profile on Instagram (between Moonbyul and Redd post) and also livenowglobal !! FINALLY !!!
I doesnt matter what you look like or how much you weigh its whats inside that counts everyone is beautiful in there own way. Its crazy how much mamamoo went though.
Thank you for the videos they always brighten our day ,and also thank you for this video, because I needed something to calm me down before my testing in 3 hours so thank you very much❤️ Moos have a great day!
i see some others have already jumped in about the 'not pretty' part... out of context it seems kind of crappy for the agency to say that but they were actually trying to prepare the girls for the reactions from kpop fans to their debut... to said fans there's a super narrow idea on what 'beauty' is... gotta be super thin (nearly skeletal), have pale skin, specific facial features and more... it's beyond ridiculous and, thankfully, has been slowly expanding (in part thanks to mamamoo, especially hwasa) but, back then they were going to get crapped on for their looks (and they did... getting called 'that ugly group' by more than a few in their first year) and the agency was trying to warn them of that. 'people are going to say you're not pretty because you don't look like models. don't let that get to you, don't focus on that. lets do great music and great performances to show those idiots what's up and shut them up'. that's one of the reasons mamamoo is the way they are, they see how it is to receive all that ridiculous, pointless hate and use that as fuel to continue bettering themselves and trying to better the kpop industry and those that consume its content ...also, sadly, that edited out a lot thing happens to quite a few artists from smaller agencies. because they're from small agencies, not many know them, so the shows cut their stuff to focus on groups they know already have fans (one of the bonuses of coming from 'the big 3' that is more or less 'the big 4' now. since those already have built in fandoms from promotions during/by the existing artists of those agencies). it's one of the big reasons mamamoo are so inspiring to so many other artists... each member got turned down by the big 3 agencies then formed together as a group and basically took kpop by storm (with lots of struggles, some still ongoing) despite being the first group for a brand new agency oh, and rbw has two ceos, one in charge of 'business' stuff, kim jinwoo, and one in charge of everything performance related, kim dohoon. virtually any time anyone (especially the mamamoo members) mentions 'the ceo' or 'our ceo' they mean kim dohoon, kdh. he's a very respected producer and composer and pretty much a father figure to the girls. he worked hand in hand with them for so long, being there when they worked on their immortal songs performances, helping write or compose so many of their songs and basically encouraging their creativity in every way possible. ...pretty much everything on the artistic side of the company is praised by the fans, it tends to be the business side that gets crapped on, esp since they just don't seem to know how to promote any of their artists at all...
Man Koreas beauty standards are so messed up 😑 I get that they were preparing them and even motivating them to be better vocalists and performers (which probably helped them in the long run) but my goodness it doesn’t make sense to me. They were beautiful from the beginning, at least in my opinion
@@SinghReacts oh, they absolutely were. but that didn't stop people from saying ridiculous stuff about their looks... and all four of them still get that to this day, though entirely too much of it is focused on hwasa
its crazy how they looked down on mamamoo not because of their talents, it just because how they looks physically. Can you imagined how stupid is that. Because they are "not pretty" plus they come from small company? Thats how korean beauty standard work even to this day. That talents that mamamoo have, if in western you know how big they will become.
There is a bit of that in western pop culture as well but they would’ve gotten big pretty early on for their talent alone thats for sure. Our beauty standards are a little wider ranged I’d say and I think at least most Americans would find the members very very attractive lol
About that "not pretty enough" sentence was true, at that time (their debut era) the definition of being female idol are: white skin, skinny (the reason Hwasa being rejected, there's even some petition to kick Hwasa from Mamamoo at that time), tall, double eyelids (that's why in 'Yes, I am' Moonbyul says that she proud of her monolids), young (the reason Solar got rejected for over 50 auditions). Conclusion if you know Girls Generation (their debuting era) from SM they fulfilled all the criteria of being an idol at that time (this is why I found the idol criteria are ridiculous) and actually these criteria still applies until now 😪. So, I actually agree with their ceo about they must go with talent not the beautiful aspect (the reason why there's no such visual role in Mamamoo only leader, vocalist, performer, and rapper), because Kpop haven't ready for girl group like Mamamoo yet, that's why they're also being told to go on diet (Moonbyul's metabolism effected by this, now she can't be fat even after eating too many food), but after debuting their agency doesn't care if they want to go diet or not, it's always the member's choice to do it🤣 They even seeing as an "old idol" at that time 🙄, those time still makes me mad and when they're debuting on stage, if I'm not mistaken there more or less 2 fans cheering for them (the perks from small agency which only recently being built). That's why I always love the people who say that they're beautiful and their talent deserve to be known despite all those ridiculous criteria..now they're considered as one of the most powerful girl group in the world despite from small company. Sorry for ranting out in here, because that video always makes me in tear and remember those time
It was a lot more that happened to them. Their CEO were told they were going to ruin him and a lot of people was against debuting them. But CEO stuck with what he wanted. It was a loooottttt more things/situations that went down. This doesn't even touch half of what they wnet through.
Yeah like people mentioned Korea is a very looks focused society. Women in Kpop are expected to be super pale white with a narrow face, high bridge nose and big double eyelid eyes. They are also expected to way less than 50kg no matter their height. It’s still weird to me how companies share their weights online. Moonbyul was also told by RBW in the beginning to not smile because of the wrinkles she gets around her nose. That’s so messed up because smiling and laughing is a natural human reaction. I think it’s gotten slightly better nowadays but female idols are still too skinny and go on crazy diets. Sure, some of them are naturally that way but I doubt all of them have the same body type naturally
It’s sad that the company would tell them “You’re not pretty enough so focus more on your skills.” So... does that mean if they were “pretty” they didn’t have to sing well? If pretty people want to be idols, be an actor or model. Don’t try to be a singer or dancer when you lack the skill. A pretty face should not be able to replace talent and skill. I guess this is why it’s unfair to put any other group up against Mamamoo’s singing with MR removed, their voices are legendary and top tier for me. No other group can beat them singing live in my opinion.
10:13 they even beat Blackpink 👍👏 i wouldn't say Los Angeles, New York, Brazil, and some Asian countries "worldwide". the reason that Mamamoo aren't as popular as Blackpink and some other girl groups is cause they don't appear to the West as often. 7 years and only 2 shows in America and 1 in Brazil, and that's it for the West.
Its not rbw its the reality in korea only pretty faces are considered to be suitable to be idols, not only looks but also mamamoo wasn't considered ideal type in kpop in terms of their body type, color etc. Mamamoo shined breaking all the odds to prove that their talent is all that matters to be successful
20:40 Recently it came out that the CEOs of RBW also told purple kiss the same thing, so it is my understanding that both groups were told this for motivation. still doesn’t make it right imo
It wasn't a lie when the CEO said that they weren't pretty enough to the korean standards. They are the most beautiful women in my eyes but in korean eyes, they aren't. So the CEO told them to go as a talented group instead of a pretty one, a group that is recognised by singing and dancing instead of a group that just stand around looking pretty in front of the camera.
Blackpink got a Netflix documentary and not Mamamoo. this is ridiculous and i don't care what others may say. with what Blackpink struggled to get a documentary? their debut got 1 billion views.
Mamamoo Storytime (in 2 parts): There is a show called I Can See Your Voice where musicians basically try to guess if a person or group can sing well or or only pretending before hearing them sing. Three women went on the show calling themselves Big Mamamoo because they are Moomoos bigger than the skinny idol standards. One of them gave a short speech about watching that clip of Hwasa giving her speech about not fitting standards and making her own, and it inspired her to come on the show to sing too. Mamamoo were the guest musicians that episode of course, Moonbyul seemed especially invested that at least some of them were fakers, and this is how it went.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-baw433Q2dcc.html
Part 2: Since the group not only sang a Mamamoo song but they did it pretty well, and ad-libbed right to Mamamoo, AND hyped the crowd at the right spot...they kind of crushed that performance. The first one to sing actually debuted a year later with a group named Pink Fantasy. That name makes it seem like they should have sparkly pony songs about non-threatening boys, but actually they have this creepy Alice in Wonderland concept going on. The recent title track I watched Shadow Play tho... the instrumentals were DEFINITELY funky and interesting and the song left me wondering... is the group that calls themselves Ping Pan actually GOOD?
Wow so much mamamoo videos today! Cried again even though already watched this video many times..they really going through a lot..and they don't always tell moomoos about it..maybe what they going through is beyond our imagination..(haihh..talk abt this make me emotional) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n46YGJFjzrE.html Hope u can react to this mamamoo heartbreaking moments...prepare tissue b4 watch it
