Awesome scenery, love it will never see it personally, I appreciate you taking time to make vlogs. The winter ones you made were awesome too. I'm a 77 year old widow and you will never know the joy these brings into my life.

Good shots of the south fork of the Kern River from the bridge and of the down-gade from Sherman Pass summit. I agree. Please consider a side trip to Alabama Hills and Whitney Portal when passing thru Lone Pine.

Thanks Ben for the effort. I never been through Kennedy Meadows. Beautiful drive. I'm wondering if Mike ever fished the West Walker. I heard the current was still a little strong.

Its crazy to think the early pioneers and native people took those mountain passes on horse, wagons and feet. Those were some tough som-biscuits. Ps That sauce would probably be pretty awesome on the bacon shrimp too. Yum! Gonna make that this weekend.

I suppose if gas is $7.49 a gallon a (small displacement) dirt bike is good transportation... Thanks for the tour Kernville/Kennedy Meadows, beautiful CA

Last time on this road from 395 up to Kennedy Meadows campsites in ‘71, was a well maintained gravel road, no blacktop or guardrails.

I don't think I've seen a radar detector since the early 90s. Thanks for another awesome road trip!

I've never not had one since about 1982 or so. Our Dad had one before that. A Cobra or something.

20:33 You should see it in winter on sleds. Go places you can't get to without a horse or mule. I wonder how those people do in winter with the road closure, sometimes just a few miles west of 395.

The road improved once you got to Inyo County.

Nice. I've never traveled the road and knowing how you vid, I knew you'd give a good showing of the pass and surrounding area. I had known that there were private property up there, but not to the extent that is indicated. S. Fork of the Kern I've been on when I was a kid when my dad hired his friend to fly us into Templeton Meadows(now closed to all aircraft) prior to it being designated. wilderness. So, Kennedy is on my bucket list to go 4x4ing to fish the Kern. The ol' Scout is getting a makeover.... BTW, nice looking steaks.

Enjoyed the trip. My dad always liked to drive on adventures; reminds me of him. I’m curious what mountains were the ones at the end behind the McDonald’s. Was it just part of the Sierra range, or McKinley, or something else? I’m not familiar with it enough. Thanks. Sure wondering how much gas it took to drive the whole way? Were there gas stations? Glad the pups got to go along. So pretty out there. Thanks again.

Sherman Pass is the only Sierra pass that I’ve never driven up to as it looks really curvy and even when I’m driving I’ll feel sick, get a stiff neck and a bad headache. Now that I’m in my mid 60’s I’ve gotten worse. Maybe after today’s video I’ll see that I can’t miss it any longer?

Very nice drive on a beautiful day, must admit however that the “by the seat of your pants”forest service road component of the initial attempt was riveting.

That's what I've been waiting for too but pfffft, I told myself in MARCH that I wanted to get down to Mammoth and mostly because of weather I never made the trip. Used to live there like a half century ago (oy), live in WA now but I've always been drawn to the eastern Sierra even though I've got the Cascades and Columbia Gorge in my backyard.

Kennedy Meadows General Store is a resupply stop along the famous PCT. It’s 700 trail miles from the Mexican border and 1900 miles to Canada. Traditionally it celebrates the the beginning of the Sierra and end of the desert section of the PCT (Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail). Getting that far is a considerable achievement. It’s celebrated in numerous RU-vid vlogs and the book and film “Wild” by Cheryl Stayed.

There are a lot of facilities for Pacific Crest Trail through hikers in Kennedy Meadows South and North. A really big hiker’s party spot for the end of the desert and the beginning of the Sierra Nevada Mountains!!! They have to pickup their bear canisters and keep them until Kennedy Meadows North.

Is Whitney Portal open yet? I find it extremely beautiful up there and it’s just a few switchbacks and you’re there after passing through the Alabama Hills. Have you ever seen “High Sierra” with Humphrey Bogart? They go fast on those scary switchbacks and they have shootouts around granite backdrops.

Heard of it, never been through there. That's a road that although I've passed it a million times on 395 I never knew where it led. Gorgeous pristine county up there.

Not gonna lie -- a little heartbroken watching Bud, coz my daughter and her family owned a Lab mix that had been with them longer than 14 years -- before my grandkids were born -- and they had to put her down yesterday. Doggie dementia. Not hard to imagine; as Labs go 14 years is OLD; body held up a lot longer than her poor brain did. The last thing to stop when they euthanized her was her heart. Poignant and not surprising. She was a bit of a nut; she used to harrass my late wife every time she went to their house. But she was a sweet dog and as she got older was more laid back and a joy to have around. Bud reminded me of Tricksy straight away and it got me right in the feels.

Curious as to the red-ish color of the creek running down the east slope. There must be either a lot of iron oxidation of the cobbles along the river or it's taking a ton of iron-rich sediment down from the crest.

Fun Fact: Around statehood, 1882, the economic potential of new state of Cali would be curtailed due to wildfire smoke, it was feared. (should have also feared entire Central Valley becoming a great lake for 6 months, up to 100/200 ft. deep, due to relentless atmospheric river flooding, as it does every couple centuries and DID right around that time, but only the Natives knew and we didn't ask, lol) Fires need not be as devastating as they often are, or as much as they are essential and beneficial. These *lands were born to BURN,* multiple native tree species cannot exist without fire inc. our beloved Giant Sequoias. So it comes down to how and when they burn not if. Native Americans set them alight at favorable times and naturally lightening did the trick for many millions of yrs.
