Man Builds 279 sqm Log Cabin Against The Council's Planning Laws | Damned Designs

Damned Designs follows homeowners who have built houses and property without planning permission. In each episode, we see the homeowners appeal to the Planning Inspectorate in the hope of saving their properties from demolition. David has been battling the council over his massive Canadian log cabin which he claims is a mobile home as it was built in Canada and shipped over but the planning authorities say otherwise as it exceeds the scale the initial designs displayed.
Jonathon built his own eco-house using recycled and natural materials with the aim to be completely off-grid but he didn't get any planning permission so the only way he can keep the house is by putting in for retrospective planning permission which they did but 4 years later he suddenly found out he never completed his application.

Guys...how can you build an entire house, without even thinking about planning permission, at your ages...that's just silliness. 'I might've taken a liberty with the first floor'...NO dude...no...this is the 'Council'...that ain't gonna fly and you ain't gonna ever win. Some things are not worth that sort of stress. Losing your family and fighting for YEARS when you'll prob STILL lose your home, and most likely your HEALTH eventually, is just crazy.

@@CarisstaRashele The regulations don't only exist because of aesthetics. They are to protect the area and the surrounding houses. If people were free to build what ever they wanted, the houses, even if build to all safety standards, could impose a danger to the neighbourhood. Take for example the house at 20:40, they got permission for a three bedroom house but build a five bedroom house and two additional structures. The house is completely surrounded by other houses, what if it caught fire? A larger house is closer to the buildings surrounding it. That particular plot has only a narrow drive to it, how is a fire going to be put out before it spreads to the surrounding buildings? The reason only a mobile home is allowed to be build in that particular area, is because they are relatively small and do not dominate the landscape in a protected area. It is to prevent rich, arrogant p***ks from buying land cheaply and building massive ugly mansions and pushing poorer people out of the area. In the US the average size of a house has grown significantly, and in recent years this has caused problems. The larger houses build in older neighbourhoods cause flooding in neighbouring properties. look up "Neighbors say McMansion next door is a nightmare" Do you think that this shouldn't be regulated? What if somebody build next to your house and caused constant flooding in your home?

@@garam6555 This show is about not applying for building permission. If all these people had applied for permission, they would have been told the changes needed. These people could have all build what they wanted in the confines of their properties regulations. None of their builds were deemed illegal because of aesthetics. Besides I was replying to a commentator who thinks in the US building is easier, when is fact zoning laws are far more strict there. In the US if an area is zoned for one type of building then only that type of building is legally allowed to be build there (unless the area was developed before modern zoning laws). You wont find different types of housing with commercial spaces among them in a new development. This is why the massive carbon copy suburbs exist and why poor and rich neighbourhoods are so prevalent and mixed housing situations so rare.

Bats are super protected but seen as a potential severe health hazard to humans in close proximity. After breeding was completed they were rehomed (celeb travel service) and the loft was deep cleaned and sterilised. All we saw, after the first 30 second glimpse, was guys in full biohazard suits with their own oxygen packs, going up to our then illegal to enter loft. It all went really well, apart from the scuttling noises, etc. The Bat Society will often help. I still remember the hatch being sealed after each bat wellbeing visit and these 'space men' coming and going at will. There was no bill whatsoever. We just repaired a broken roof tile!

The guy with the nosey neighbor clearly feels like he can do what he wants and just wants to use his money to fight everybody. He submitted plans for a 3br house, then ignores them and builds a 5br house. He submits plans to build a garage, then ignores them to build a guest house. He submits nothing and then builds a 3rd structure, which is now the garage he was supposed to build in the first place. They should have torn it all down in my opinion. Planning laws were built for people like this.

I live in the country side and am sick of the amount of building going on without planning. In most villages the infrastructure is on a knife edge, and adding more and more homes will only push it over. Most properties here have bore holes for water but the more houses "Popping up" lowers the water table and so stops everybody else's water, Flooding is caused by building on run off areas. Not to mention the extra traffic on tiny lanes that are just not designed for it This guy is feeling sorry for himself but he took the risk and the place should be raised to the ground.

Judging by the comments a lot of people don't seem to understand why the log cabin isn't permitted, but a mobile home is. It's because it's in a "green belt" so they haven't got permission to build anything permanent in there. A mobile home can be towed away after it's served it's purpose with minimal impact on the land. I'm not saying whether I agree or not, I'm just explaining the reason for it.

I’m a Brit living in the Far East. What a difference in government policies. In the U.K., you have all the BS red tape, sometimes you have to fight for planning on your own land which can cost tens of thousands. Then they have to approve the design, anything they don’t like, you have to change. Top that all, you can pay hundreds of thousands for a poxy little plot, depending on location. Where I live, you want a house. You can just register it and build it. They don’t care what it looks like. How big or small it is and where it’s located on your property. That’s the way it should be.

As an American, I know we have some ridiculous permitting processes, but after watching several dozen build shows in the UK, the planning permission is beyond extreme!! All that said, the people in this episode were basically stupid!! I feel bad for them, but seriously, who builds a house without a permits (planning permission)?!? And who defies all regulations with a nemesis spy on the street??? That’s a battle you will NEVER win!! The poor guy with the bats though, what should’ve been a show piece for sustainable building and cheap utilities literally destroyed his family!!! That one broke my heart!

In several of these cases I think balancing humanity against the family investments and council rules would be best and could still "teach a lesson". Allow the property's to remain, UNALTERED, through the current owner's lifetime as long as they remain in residence. NO inheriting the buildings. That should make people think ahead knowing that the first thing their heirs will have to do after burying Dad is to demolish the family home.
@AFAskygoddess

You're wrong. The kind of people who do this are narcissists. They don't care about the house after they die. They only care about themselves in their lifetime and think that rules don't apply to them.

A log home is not at all a mobile home. There is just as much a "spirit" of mobile home as any other pre-fab home option out there. A pre-fab home is a regular home that is either fully pre-built or major components are pre-built then delivered and assembled onsite, rather than raw materials having to be ship to site, cut and put together from scratch.
