One man builds a cheap, rustic log cabin in the Canadian wilderness alone and without power tools over several months in 2017.

To become more self-reliant.
Finally, one video showing the entire build process from the cutting of the first tree to the laying of the last floor board - no food, no talking, no visitors, just carpentry, bushcraft, timber framing, blood, sweat and tears.
My end goal is to have an off grid, primitive wilderness homestead, where I can practice primitive technology, bushcraft and traditional skills in an effort to become as completely self reliant as possible in this day and age.
In late April, I cut the first balsam fir tree down on the property near Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. Next, from June until August, I collected all of the building materials and fabricated the cabin using saddle notches in the corners. I cleared the land in August, laid down gravel for a pad and began erecting the off grid log cabin. By September, the walls were done and I started on the roof framing in October.
In November, I burned the roof boards with shou sugi ban, an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood. Against convention, I installed the roof in board and batten fashion, using my roofing background to come up with techniques to keep the cabin watertight.
Next, I moved inside where I installed a Vermont Castings wood stove on top of a limestone flagstone floor, which extended from the doorway to the center of the cabin underneath the fireplace.
For the rest of the floor, I framed it using 2x4 and 2x6 red pine boards and then installed 2x6x10' boards, which I burned using the same shou sugi ban technique.
Now in December, I chinked the walls with moss and clay and have been spending a lot of time in the cabin, starting rustic furniture made with materials from the surrounding forest.

My Self Reliance My uncle, a trapper near fox creek, alberta, tells me the game wardens burnt down someones cabin built in the woods. It has to be on skids, now, even on an owned traplines. Wardens (athabasca office) tell me one can only "camp" 21 days, and not allowed to "live" in the wild. If so, they would be forced out and, yes, cabin destroyed. Purchased land seems only way..but not all have money. If any, its they that could use this resource most. Sad; ww1 and 2 didnt do much to keep us living free..or id id be out there too. 6 stars out of 5 on both cabin and video presentation.

Why did you cut all the way down on the one window instead of cutting it the right size like the others?? Was there a purpose to that? I was just wondering.. also I think it would look nice if you built a railing around the porch

My plan is by 19 to have this cabin built, and live there with animals and a farm up in Alaska .

Yea, I was a boy scout at age 8 and started fly fishing when I was 14. I absolutely get what's going on with you when you're "out there". Especially in the pristine areas. I've got 2 acres in Southern Utah that I'm going to build an adobe and rough lumber home on. I'm nervous about my skills but watching you really anchored my commitment and confidence. I'm going to follow you and take pictures of the process. Intelligent, kind, hard working, (probably introverted) and productive. Just excellence.

Yes, I think one of the wonders of the internet is that it has brought out people's altruistic nature to share what they know for the simple satisfaction of helping others, even when it offers no tangible reward for those doing the work. This is what Microsoft did not anticipate when it spent years and tens of millions of dollars developing the Encarta encyclopedia, before the rug was yanked out from underneath them by the far superior Wikipedia, which is put together for free and makes money for almost nobody. There is no sin in the pride of being knowledgable and competent, and of sharing what you know for no other sake than to do it. The shared knowledge and wisdom available on forums for topics of all kinds, combined with instructional videos, make almost anything possible. For instance, I am building my own MRI machine out of toothpicks and marshmallows, and learning brain surgery in my spare time.

Michael M....Thank you for your comment & it is a wonderful thing people do to just plain help other people with NO monetary expense involved! The next viewing I understand a little....after watching several times (and I do watch it several times) I "get it"!!!! Thank you all you "You Tube" commenters & video makers....YOU ARE AWESOME!!!! When I lived in Japan I rebuilt a lovely old traditional house with basic cheap tools , this really reminds me of that experience

My buddy and I built our shack back in the 60's, when we were very young teenagers. We scowler the rural neighborhood for any loose wood 2x4's, wood 2x8x3/4 planks nails, and tar paper. Made the door and the window door ourselves. Even had a padlock on the door. back then we only had tools. I remember straightening out used nails, so we could reuse them.

The instructions for building a log cabin with hand tools are easier to understand than IKEA cartoon instructions.

Amazing. Saw it was over an hour long and thought I'd just flick through to the end but I ended up watching the entire thing. It was incredibly cathartic.

I just recently found your videos. I`m glad I did. I am from ON {Sudbury) but lived a great portion of my childhood in Labrador City. I love to fish, hunting not so much but I am so at home watching your work, it makes me feel like I am home. I am 51 now, childhood is over but I still fish every day that I can even though I now live in Plater rock NB. I just wanted to tell you that you put some fire back in my belly from watching your journey. Thanks Brother. Blessing to you, Callie, the Wife and girls. You are a true inspiration.

I leave youtube alone for a few weeks and come back to find one of the best videos I've seen on the tube. It really puts it into perspective how many videos and how much work you've put into the cabin when you see it in this beautifully edited video Shawn. Struth, it must have taken days to put this together, not to mention all the filming over the year; all as if you actually were a paid film-maker. I wouldn't be surprised if some TV channel wants to make use of you after this. Thank you, love the channel and the great content; I'll binge watch the remaining videos I've missed while away.

My cousin in Norway did something interesting, and I don't know if it's common practice - but I think it's pretty smart. He wanted a good-size cabin, but he built a small log cabin to live in whilst he built another, larger cabin around it. That way he could live there while the larger cabin was being built. Then the idea was to disassemble the smaller cabin when the large cabin was finished. When I visited him in Norway, the smaller cabin was still inside the larger one. He hadn't the heart to disassemble it right away. Now it's rebuilt as a guest, or storage cottage on another area of his land.

Conspiracy Theorist You make conspiracy theorists look bad. Oh wait nvm, that was just a bullshit phrase put out in the 60s to disparage the millions of Americans who questioned and probed the Warren Commision's official narrative of JFK's assassination.

@My Self Reliance - This is simply the BEST off grid cabin build video on the internet. I should know, I've been writing about it for 6 years. GREAT JOB! This is my dream, to build an off grid cabin like I want it, on my own land. It's the ultimate freedom and sense of accomplishment. I would be proud to live in a cabin like you built. It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid. Now 44 years old, I'm getting older and less capable of working the hard labor needed to build it. Your videos inspire me to get off my a** and do it, Shawn! I appreciate the amount of work and effort you put into your videos and the builds you do. And it's always a treat and a pleasure to watch you and @Joe Robinet take off on your canoe adventures across the lakes of Canada. Amazing stuff man. I hope maybe one day to do that too! Good luck and keep up the awesome work!
