“One of MTV series Catfish's most alarming cases presented itself last week when an episode focused on a man who believed he had been in a six-year relationship with US singer Katy Perry.
Spencer Morrill described to presenters Nev Schulman and Max Joseph how he was under the impression he'd been exchanging emails and texts with her Perry over half a decade going so far as to make an engagement ring for the "Roar" singer which cost him "25 percent of his savings."

Yes, after the woman who catfished him told him that she wasn't Katy, he continued to email the email address that the catfisher used after he went back home, and emailed her stuff along the lines of "When can i really see you" & "I'm still waiting for us to meet, I don't believe that was really you." (By the way, he's been emailing the address ever since he's been back, and did it for a couple of months) The episode was really sad, and pretty cliche honestly.

When dealing with entities online, two tests everyone should utilize. The backwards test and the hook test. The backwards test is where you request the person you are talking to spell a word backwards, such as the word "backwards". (sdrawkcab) This weeds out any bots. Second, the hook test is an extremely good way to verify the person you are talking to is the person in the picture. Prepare the other to send you a picture of themself, they will have two minutes to do so after your request. Ask them to make a specific hand gesture in frame of the picture, such as a pirate hook with their pointer finger. Once you have that picture, the odds are nearly 100% they are who they say they are. Lastly, remember audio can be modulated; do not trust audio.

I thought she meant that she "gets" stuff, like getting a joke, or understanding the chances of that happening. I dont know. I talked to a girl for several months that catfished me about 8 years ago. Never had a girl friend before we talked. I don't feel bad for people that do this. Its fucked up, they play with peoples emotions. Like, it was weird. The girl was married in real life, she did it out of boredom. I dated a girl in real life that was pretty, but learned that she had some anger issues that came out slowly, I then learned that she catfishes guys, so I dumped her on the spot through an email. I am not a psychologist, but you have to just cut your losses with these people. They need professional help, do not feel guilty for getting rid of them, they can talk to people without fooling anyone. Don't be stupid.

I don't get how people fall for this honestly. My last two relationships were with people I met online. I knew who they were, they proved it. I literally just flew back from meeting my current boyfriend I met online. He was exactly who he was online. I wouldn't date him if I never heard his voice or saw him on camera. He constantly proved he was real and made our relationship open for everyone to see. I can't see myself being stupid enough to spend money on someone I never video chatted with.

As for this story as a whole - my sympathy for the guy is decreased significantly simply due to how easy and obvious the red flags are in this day and age. Yes, people will believe what they want to believe, but that doesn't make someone less ignorant for believing something that has so many red flags attached. Have a friend who got catfished pretty hard a couple years ago, and the most bothersome part about the whole situation is that he more or less obfuscated the truth about a serious red flag (video chat). I asked him something along the lines of "so you've seen her and Skyped with her?", and he replied something along the lines of "yeah, I've Skyped with her". It only came out after he found out he was being catfished that he'd only voice chatted on Skype. If you ignore the obvious warnings, a lot of the blame falls on you. And I say this as a person who has also made mistakes in life from ignoring warnings - everyone is capable of doing it, but you need to accept responsibility.
