Tbf, one of the reasons City did so badly in the season before Pep took over was that City very publicly announced mid-season that Pellegrini would be replaced by Pep. But because Pep didn't want to take over mid-season, Pellegrini was left in-post. Which killed Pellegrini's authority for that season. So to gauge where City were at, you should maybe look to the previous season. City finished 2nd.

Nice may be more attractive for Potter since there is a strong team there and also more chance of European football. Though they won't be in Europe next season, if they sign Potter then they will be fighting for European places. Pellegrinis final season deserves a bit more context. He was told he was being binned in February AFTER he'd extended his contract too, they were 2nd in the league at that point. After the announcement they lost their next 4games and dropped to 4th, where the remained til the end of the season. If that announcement had never happened and the players and manager didnt have to deal with all the distraction they likely wouldve carried on and potentially even won the league. They still won the league cup that season too. Pep is a great manager for sure, one of the best ever but to try and argue that he doesn't inherit great winning sides is just obtuse, he makes those sides better but they started out as top level, title contenders

By the way, one thing I find weird is how people nowadays seem to take for granted that, if you have to face Manchester City for any title, *you've lost*, period. I think the significance of this season is really about city being able to grasp the third best english team of all time. If they can dominate the rest of the decade they should be able to tie chelsea if not beat them on champions leagues and tie arsenal on premiere leagues if not beat them. I don't think they can or need to match liverpool's and united's trophy cabinets. I would consider city a success then. It is certainly within reach.

I feel like people don't give some credit to Madrid for just not being the same team since last. Yes City dominated us, but almost any in form team could. Benz is 35 and has been in atrocious form, Modric is looking at 38 and just can't keep that same energy for long enough, Kroos is 32 but is also just horrible this season, and Valverde has dropped in form SO MUCH after the WC it's maddening. Camavinga is forced to play out of position against the best team in the world at 20 y/o. Tchouameni has been good but has barely adjusted to the team at all. There goes our midfield and our left back. That means no service for Vini and Rodrygo consistently and no cover for the defense. We were extremely lucky to get this far in the first place with how out of form Pool and Chelsea were. This club is in the midst of major transitioning and it hasn't been pretty for us on multiple occasions
