Felix Baumgartne broke the world record on October 14, 2012 for the highest freefall ever. He dove from the edge of the space to Earth and was falling for more than 2 minutes before he deployed his parachute.

I remember watching this live years ago. Almost thought he was just gonna start floating, but i'm guessing those massive balls of steel helped give him the weight he needed to fall.
For people saying "why didn't he burn up" or "why is the shuttle floating but not him", he isn't in space. He's simply high in the atmosphere, around 100,000 feet above us, when space is about 300,000 feet above us. The person who uploaded this video just put "space" in the title. The shuttle is being held up by a large weather balloon which is why it's floating, and he is wearing a helmet because the air is SUPER thin up there that he wouldn't be able to breathe without the helmet on. He's not high enough to burn up or float.
It has nothing to do with height here. It's not "he's not high enough to burn up". It is "he's not going fast enough to burn up". Things like the shuttle go through re-entry effects not because of how high they are, but because of how fast they are going - being that they have been orbiting the Earth - which requires a tremendous velocity. Something just dropping from a static location isn't ever going to be going fast enough to burn up.

Some of these questions are SOOO stupid. 1) why didn't he float? A: he was never in orbit, the craft was held up by a massive helium balloon. The only way to achieve micro gravity in space is by being in orbit which is when you are going so fast you fall and miss the earth. Since he was going 0 mph relative to the ground he fell. 2) Where's the ocean? A: he was only 40km up so you can only see so much until you hit the horizon, hr was above a large continent and the oceans were all past the horizon, technically he wasn't in space just insanely high. Q: Where are the stars? A: just like how you can't see many stars in the middle of a city, a cameras exposure focuses on the ground and the light and doesn't render the stars, it's no that there are no stars it's that the camera just can't see them because it's too bright. Q: Where's the sun? A: the sun was to the right behind the camera, you can see the light reflection on the craft indicating where the sun is. Q: That is fake the earth is flat. A: no.. not only is it mathematically proven but he have thousands of satellites orbiting the earth giving you internet and GPS, if you know anything about oribital mechanics you know that an orbit is when you are going so fast that as you fall you miss the earth, orbits are IMPOSSIBLE in a flat earth. This picture also SHOWS the curvature of the earth. You can't see the whole earth because it's SO DAMN BIG but you can see the curve. If the earth was flat you'd be able to see Tokyo from LA, but you can't because the horizon is caused by the curve of the earth. Please people, use common sense and take an initiative to educate yourself.

After a short time you will reach terminal velocity, at which point it just feels like you're lying on a cushion of air. Astronauts, however, do have this feeling for the entirety of their stay in orbit. I can only assume that you get used to it relatively quickly.

he was not in space. never did he leave earths atmosphere, if he did he would have disintegrated on reentry. the threshold from earth to space is pretty broad but never was he in the complete vacuum of space. he did not fall from space
Judging from the comments below,, apparently NONE of you went to science class. 1) He's not in space. He's only 24 miles up. No where close to space. 2) He's hanging from a balloon. He's not in orbit so when he steps off the platform, yes he will fall straight down. 3) Why doesn't he float?? BECAUSE HE's not in orbit - he's hanging from a balloon.!!!! 4) Why doesn't he burn up..??? He's not entering the atmosphere at 17,000 MPH like a space craft. He's stepping off a stationary gondola attached to a balloon. 5) No, that is not the curve of the earth you see. That curve is even more pronounced than what astronauts see on the space station. It's a fish eye lens needed to capture the entire gondola at close range. It just creates the illusion of a sphere in the background. Yeah,, he's really high up... not in space.. It was very important what Mr. Baumgartner did, he proved Astronauts could eventually if necessary escape the vehicle and parachuted at altitudes around 150 000 feet and free fall at sped close to sound barrier ! Extraordinary Brave guy :)
