Stories like this are what got my father into collecting and hitting yard sales, which was unfortunately in the early 90s and he never was able to hit that gold mine of 50s cards. We went thru all his cards a few weeks back and while he def did get some solid cards, he's overloaded with junk wax Era stuff. It was still fun going thru them tho, but man we tried so hard finding those vintage cards. Still was a great experience collecting with him.

Just helped clean out my aunts house with my cousin. Found a near mint Dr J rookie card along with a Wilt Chamberlain and Lew Alcindor (not rookie cards though). Also found a bunch of 1960 cards that included Mays, Aaron, etc. We were pretty excited to see them after being the attic for 50 years. How they stayed in near mint condition was interesting as they were in a plastic box within a cardboard box. The carboard box along with all the other paper/cardboard in that box was chewed away by mice. So glad the good cards were in that plastic box.

I had over 3000 baseball cards growing up in the 60s. The only rookie card of a future hall of famer I remember was of Tom Seaver. Had about six of that 1968 card. Nolan Ryan another. Can't remember more. But I'm sure there could have been. Mickey Mantle though was my #1 guy. Had all of Mickey from 1961-1968 and 1956. Nothing more than that. Willie Mays, Warren Spahn, Sandy Koufax etc. etc. etc. I had at least one of many major superstars of baseball. It was a fun hobby until it got boring when I matured (after acquiring 3000 bordom tends to take over). I gave them all away to a neighbor's kid so he might enjoy something in which to devote some wholesome time to. At the time card collecting, including Beatle cards, was no big deal like stamps or coins were and so was never regarded as great in value. To this day I've no regrets letting go of my collection. It meant more to somebody else at the time than it would have for me later. Much later. Like twenty years later. That's when those cards started to mean something financially. And I wasn't about to hang on to 3000 near worthless cards in 1973. They were just pictures of men I once looked up to as a kid. When I became a man myself I simply wanted to stop starring at and adoring pictures of other men. No regrets at all. Oh, I was able to retire at 50 so things worked out financially very well indeed. And I didn't need any help from a Mickey Mantle card to achieve that.

I have 3 shoe boxes full of 1980 Topps and another box of 1950s and early 60s cards that I won in a football game bet. I want that box somewhere around 1984 or 1985. I about passed out as I was going through these cards due to what I found. LOL! ------- 22 - 1980 Topps Ricky Henderson in nearly perfect condition. Of course, 1980 Nolan Ryan, Brett, Rose, etc... ** 1954, 55, (4)56, 57, 58 Topps Mickey Mantle 1953 Topps Willie Mays (it looked like someone crumpled it up in their hand and flattened it back out. 1953, 55 Jackie Robinson 1954, 56 Ted Williams 2 - 1960 Carl Yastrzemski And much more

I always put Jody Reed's cards in my bike spokes, and if he wasn't available - Oil Can Boyd! Anyway, this is interesting because a lot of high-end collectors don't want anyone to know that they have cards because of theft. I cant say I blame them. I bought a collection of 1950 Bowman Baseball cards autographed in 1950 and 1951 from a lawyer who was taking care of an estate of an elderly woman whose husband had the 1950 Bowman set autographed that year. Apparently, he kept all the correspondence and envelopes along with the autographed cards in a box up in the attic for 66 years until his passing. I was fortunate enough to get some very rare, autographed cards of Dizzy Trout, Mickey Harris, Bill Swift, Vern Stephens and George Sternweiss - and a great story! This one has been great. We're the same age Mike, but I find as I get older, I tend to look back on my childhood and try to get a little bit of that back through video games, 1980's movies and sports cards. I find this is universal with all sports card collectors whether it be Jefferson Burdick's generation, Lionel Carter's Greatest Generation, the Baby Boomers or Gen X. And I'll probably be playing video games and blasting Van Halen when I'm an old guy. I've found that the 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson is a much more difficult card than the Mantle in that set. Same with the Hoyt Wilhelm and Pee Wee Reese and Roy Campanella. And people wont like this, but I think the 1952 Topps set is overrated.

When I was growing up one of the first stories I had ever heard about Babe Ruth as a player playing baseball was a neighbor of mine had told me while he was a young kid in the 1920's he had a relative that was big on trying to find the 1914 Babe Ruth Rookie card. So when they found his collection of Babe Ruth cards after he passed on they said they found 4 cards from 1914 in his poesession and had a expert come out and take control of the cards and said it was such a high dollar amount that information wasn't told on all the cards they found bc of their value and worth. Soo I can imagine that each card he had of Babe Ruth was probably in prestine and in great condition.

Said he had multiple of the mantle rookies both topps and bowman. Said he had multiple of every mantle up to his last year and had all the star players and multiple of each. Said that’s all he spent his money on was cards. Said he would open them and set them in something to protect them. Idk what he used dad said but said he never played with em threw them around nothing said he literally treasured them and always handled them with care. Always said these cards are gonna be worth money some day. Well fast forward to years later before he got cancer and died guess they were cleaning his house out to move or whatever and his sister threw all the cards away. Said they ain’t worth nothing. And I found this out pry around 15-20 years ago and I was talking to my dad a few years ago and was showing him the different cards and said he had all those and showed them what they were selling for in various grades and my dad couldn’t believe it. To think he had 3 kids that coulda got those cards and done something with them. EVERYTIME I think of it I get sick to my stomach. I’ve even talked to his kids a few times about it and they literally tell me not to talk about it cause they too get sick. Not saying his cards would be high grades but dad said the way he treated his cards was like gold. Just had to share that.

How does the Mantle 8 only sell for 80,000? When the 8.5 goes to 800K?

Would an auction house charge you a flat rate to authenticate your baseball cards, or would they do the same outrageous thing that PSA, SGC, and others do and charge you more to grade a card that's worth a lot? (In this case, over $13K per card!) Just curious.

You are mistaken sir, FYI no 52 Topps Mantle PSA 8’s sold for 80k in 2018, the card was sold for 420k as per the Heritage website states (the PSA website made an error & it is incorrect on that card). I follow the market closely since 2015 & distinctively remember the sales back in 2018 & it definitely sold for 420k. You have to go way back to 2012 to see any PSA 8s sales in the 80k range.

Great video! Oh the dreaded cards in the trash. I have a worse story for you. My Dad had moved out of his parents house in the late 60’s and his Mother gave all of his cards to some friend of the family’s 6 year old who was visiting. If that wasn’t bad enough, the cards were almost complete sets of Topps from 1952-1960! All of the future hall of famers. Mantle cards. You name the player and they were in this collection. He didn’t find out about this until months later and by then it was too late to get them all back. He has a hard time talking about today. I can’t imagine how that could have put my current card business in the forefront of todays hobby.

@@JunkWaxHero and to add to the story. In the late 80’s I went to visit my grandmother and discovered an old clubhouse behind the house and inside I could see remnants of some of the cards. The were destroyed by the weather over the years. It was only about 30-40 cards so the rest were obviously taken after the original give. But that kid must have been playing with them there. I had no idea why the cards were there until my Dad told me his story a few years ago. When I told him what I had seen, you could see his heart just sink.
