Seattle, Washington, 1984. A group of kids attending Shorewood High School formed a group called Sleze. And as the name suggests, they were a band of Motley Crue Wannabe’s mostly playing cover songs from some of the notable glam metal artists of the time. Sleze were looking for a singer and although Layne had already taken up playing the drums, his step-brother Ken Elmer thought he should audition so he spoke to the band's drummer to see if they would be interested.

Layne Rutherford Staley was born on August 22nd, 1967 at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue to his father Phillip Blair Staley and mother Nancy Elizabeth Layne. They lived in Kirkland, a suburb East of Seattle. The pair had only been married 6 months prior, with Phil being 29 and Nancy was just 19 years old. Phil was a car salesman and Nancy was competing in Beauty Pageants.
Just a few years later, when Layne was only 7, his parents would divorce and Nancy would remarry in 1975 to Jim Elmer. This didn’t appear to affect Layne too much though as he would comment many years later “No deep dark secrets there”.
Layne was just like any other normal kid, he loved art and drawing and just doing what kids his age did. His love for music wouldn’t kick in for another few years, although he did attend his first big concert at the age of 8 years old when Elton John came to town and his new Step-Father Jim took him to the show.

The unplugged version of Down in a hole to me gives a good representation of where Lane was. Everytime I heard Nutshell and Down in a hole I cry so much. The pain and demons he was going through, you feel his soul in his voice on this performance

I played drums with Mike Starr when he was 14-15 yrs old in a garage band in Burien, probably his first band. We all used to sit around and talk about what it might be like to make it big. Mike was a nice kid, and I was super excited to see he had actually done it! I enjoyed the music, bought the CDs but didn't really follow the band closely. I was very sad when I heard of his struggles... addiction sucks, and it changes who you are, but I think Mike remained the internally sensitive person he was when I knew him. I watched him on celebrity rehab though, and could tell then that he was damaged. I read later that he had lost to his addiction. RIP Mike, your Good Light still shines.

@@doctorquid You're welcome. I'm 59yrs old now, work in mental health and have seen my fair share of addiction. I think it's important for all to understand that people have a story, that they were kids with hopes and dreams before the substances and the consequences that come. Some go down that path and for what ever reason (often sheer luck or Devine intervention... take your pick) they come through it. Some don't. I've used my part of Mike's story (without identifying him by name) when talking to people about addiction etc. In this way, I hope to channel some good energy from the guy I briefly knew, and use it for good. I'm sure he'd approve. Be well, best wishes.

Mike was my favorite. Addiction does change you. I went through it. Mike scalped AIC tickets for drug money. When you get off heroin, you gravitate toward benzos. Mike couldn't shake those. I finally did. Sept 4, I'll be 7 years clean. RIP Mike and Layne. Edit: Mike felt guilty for not calling 911 on Layne. It was too late anyway. Layne knew that. Demri had already visited him. The only thing that would've happened would've been paparazzi everywhere taking pictures of Layne at the worst time of his life. Somebody should've told Mike he actually protected Layne from those photos.

This is so true. As much as we elevate fallen heroes like Layne Staley, that sometimes is unfair to those who have had the strength to stick around and keep going, like Jerry. Jerry is my single favorite musician of all time. I was too young to see them in their early days, but I got to see AiC this past September with William and they are so amazing. Darkness, depression, drug abuse, and suicide are interwoven into grunge and makes it part of what it is...but I think that element needs counterbalances to give it staying power and I can think of no better counterbalance than Jerry Cantrell.

Honestly, one of the sad things about Layne's death is that nobody knew he was gone until his accountants called his mom and said his account hadn't been used. Then she went over there, heard his cat Sadie crying out for help and knew something had happened to her son because Sadie was normally quiet

The ending of this documentary really hit me in my feels. I have to say that AIC is my favorite band of all times. Layne's voice always resonated in my core. I can feel his voice cut through me. Here I am almost 51 years old, and remembering the first time I heard Man In The Box. I was hooked from that moment, and went out and got the CD the next day. And everyone ever since. I have meet both Layne and Jerry at a couple different concerts. Awesome people. I felt right at home sitting there talking to them like we have been friends since the first grade or something.

When Facelift came out , I would blast it constantly in the car . My oldest was 4 years old . He would be headbanging in his car seat 😂 I was lucky enough to see them on the Facelift tour . My oldest is a die hard AIC fan and holds it against me because I got to see Layne . Here I am 54 years old and still cry if I see a documentary about him . ❤️😥😥

Addiction is just like any other struggle in the sense that you can’t help the person suffering, they have to want it themselves badly enough. You have to be sick and tired of being sick and tired. And Layne wasn’t, Layne was in such a bad state of mind that he was committed to going out that way in the end. Because of demri and because of his father. My mother was just like his father. She used me for drugs and money for a long time as well. And when I got clean, she continued to suck me dry until I relapsed, and stole my pills and dope. I finally got clean for good and cut her out. But it was the hardest decision of my life having to cut her out when I longed to get to know her and have that mother son bond my whole life. I get it. RIP Layne… your story is a sad one.. but you’ve helped me and so many others…

Drugs are always the common denominator with the deaths of these talented musicians, starting in the 50's and continuing today. So many talented, good people over the decades, lost to addiction. It's the hardest demon to fight besides depression, combine the two and there's hardly any coming back. You are so right about not being able to help someone with their struggles, even with the ones closest to you. They have to want it, and it comes down to having to do what's best for your own recovery. A psychiatrist told me once that if a person is determined to end things, there's no stopping them. I'm so sorry about your relationship with your mother. I hope you're doing well today.

Nothing to be ashamed of or weird about. I was absolutely devastated when Layne died, having grown up at the beginning of my teens with AIC. Already using cocaine, speed and alcohol heavily when he died, I then went through a difficult time with a relationship breakdown and two big deaths in the family. Unfortunately my drug use spiralled rapidly into heroin and crack use for many, many years which felt more like one big, long day, simply because no day changed at all. Thankfully I'm clean for five years now, but it's taken its toll even now. I've lost so many friendships and chances to make amends to family members who are now gone, but at least I'm still on the right track. I'm actually finding a new appreciation for AIC in recent years, but it doesn't stop me feeling sad when I hear Layne's voice.

I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne! Layne’s mom said it best regarding his voice: it’s like Nails surrounded by marshmallows! I agree👍🏻 RIP LAYNE❤️

Check out the late, great Mark Lanegan's memoirs, "Sing Backwards and Weep." The audio version, read by Mark himself, is here on RU-vid for free. Although its 12 hours long, the stories Mark tells about Layne and his father, which I won't spoil for you, are both incredible and pathetic. The life of a heroin addict is absolutely terrifying.

He had one of the most unique voices I'd ever heard. When he'd sing, I could feel his emotions and relate to them as well. What a horrible tragedy. A life taken from the world far too soon. I pray that he's at peace and the demons that tormented him are gone. He is sadly missed. ❤

I still get a little bent when docs like this will point out Kurt Coblams issues and apparent suicide, while mere seconds earlier show a picture of Scott Weiland and make no mention of the fact he went through the same thing. Demri didn't die of a sudden overdose. She had gotten Endocarditis from IV drug use. She had been in the hospital sick. She had several operations. She died slowly over the course of a couple of years. They watched each other waste away. Layne sunk further after her death.

I've never heard about her overdosing in a guy's car. I'm sure anything is possible. I know Mark Lanegan said in his memoir that she showed up at his place with an IV pole asking for dope. She had several operations. I know a young lady that had endocarditis and she had surgery but kept using and she passed away.i can't imagine after being on heroin, pills overdosing you. Especially back then. But I guess anything is possible. I only heard her mom say she died slowly over the course of two years. What kind of pills? Can you link her mom saying that? I'm just so fascinated with the Seattle scene. I've watched so much on Demri and everyone from that scene. I've just never seen anything referencing her death to an overdose in a car.

Cool documentary! If any band deserves a decent tribute it's AIC. What a story - including their unlikely comeback in 2006, and three more LP's. They've been reformed for longer than they were together the first time. Salut Jerry, Sean, Mike and William. No-one could ever take the place of Layne- I really miss him. However, William has proven to be a great partner for Jerry to work with. Jerry's writing, singing and playing is better than ever. Good stuff, cheers.

Layne's death completely ripped me up, despite how expected it had become. We'd heard nothing of him for a few years and you just knew it was coming eventually, but when the news came it was devastating for AIC fans like myself who'd been into them since 13 and were now 20. Unfortunately I then failed to deal with a lot of the crap in my own life in the years following his death, I never showed that face to my friends, and I was consumed by my own heroin and crack addiction. Thankfully I'm clean now and I've found a completely new appreciation and perspective for AIC music. I'll never, ever get tired of that voice, or that MTV Unplugged performance.

Very well put together and narrated, thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I know AIC’s story through and through but it never gets old hearing a slightly different rendition of it. AIC, along with Layne and Jerry’s harmonies, will always be a staple in my developing music style growing up.

I loved Alice in Chains, Metallica, Megadeth, Godsmack, Pearl Jam, White Zombie we're my main bands to listen to when I would blaze it, pop it and guzzle bud... I really connected with the lines.. "and yet I fight, yet I fight these demons all alone... I'd be better off dead"... His songs helped millions of addicted fans to seek help!! His death was not just a total loss because his death helped people open their eyes to see that this lifestyle kills!! I got help and whenever I felt like using again I would put on this album to remind myself that I want to be alive..... 🔥

I remember this time lie it was yesterday. During the ‘80’s, I was enjoying bands I loved during the ‘70’s come into their own through the ‘80’s,-ie. Scorpions, Van Halen, etc. When Grunge came along, I felt a bit lost. But when Alice In Chains came out with “Man In A Box,” I was like,”Hell yes, this is my band!”🎧

I severely miss Layne and AIC , such a shame, they were so great together but being an addict myself, suffering from depression and anxiety I can understand now from his beautiful voice and lyrics that he was a tortured soul and I pray that he is finally at peace

Layne and Jerry together is amazing no two ways about it but people don’t give Jerry enough credit cause I’ll tell you Alice is JUST as good now. Rainier Fog is amazing and so are the two albums before it. Whole jar of flies and self titled are my fav rainier comes in at 3. Also Jerry’s solo albums are godsends

I'm sorry, but AiC with William is not even close to being on the same level as the original lineup with Layne. They are better than 99% of what's out there today, but Jerry and Layne were truly something special.

I was never an Alice in chains fan. It was kinda before my time a bit, and it was over played on the radio growing up so I kinda just thought it was "poser rock" or dad rock. But when I ended up getting into drugs myself, I was able to hear music for the first time again, and all may preconceived notions were proved wrong when the lyrics spoke to me, and I finally understood them for the first time. after my first month on hard drugs, but music preferences changed drastically, and bands like nirvana, and Alice in chains I really appreciated and understood. anyway. I know respect and adore Alice in chains for their contributions to music.

Great documentary. I'm watching these trying to understand addiction. I'll never understand. My husband lost his battle and I'm 14 mo later shocked and devastated. I guess the only lesson is you can't will someone to get better. You can't love them to health. All of these icons Layne, chris, chester, kurt saved millions thru their music, but paid the ultimate price. It's beyond sad.

One of my favourite bands ever and singers of all time. No one ever can replace Laynes vocals. Just like a ton of other band leaders that unfortunately we lost too soon. 😔 he was so beautiful. But watching him die infront of the world was so tragic. His passing away has affected me a lot but i learned now to stay away from substances. I miss them. I miss him. Jerry still carries him on. Rest in peace to those that passed away by addiction. I came too close. Very close to totally giving up as well and i just want to be free of all of this self loathing. I will have peace one day. Love you AIC.

It's truly ashame and hurts me deeply that Kurt , Layne , Mike Star , Chris Cornell and so many others could find & have what they provided for so many ! Combined they all helped me get threw so seriously low times , they helped me grow , learn about myself and continue on and I just can't imagine what they could have contributed.... extremely greatful to have found them and been able to lean on there words ,there music and be where I am today and it's so said they never found peace . I hope they have it now !!!!

I still remember hearing Man in the Box for the 1st time. Cantrell is one of my favorite guitar player. Genius riffs. R.I.P. Layne Staley. That was a huge blow for me; I loved AiC so much. Funny thing though, hearing Layne talk; he sounds a bit like Dave Mustaine.
