We are family friends with Gary. He discovered he has ALS this past summer, and is not doing very well. Please say a prayer for Gary and his wonderful family. Thank you.
Its so sad to hear this. May he rest in peace now. He was fortunate to have as many years as he did, a lot are not as fortunate. He will always live on in our hearts.
RIP. I met Mr. Klar at a convention and he was so kind to myself and my sister. I will never forget how he treated us and valued us as fans. A true class act.
Interesting how even though Steele was an antagonistic character, he was still very likable and even relatable. And then you see the actor talk in real life, and you understand why you felt that way
Myrdred Deceiver a zombie apocalypse would most likely, I'm sure, tend to bring out the worst in people. Hardest thing to do would be keeping your sanity. Second hardest thing; keeping your humanity.
First time I've ever seen Gary outside of Day. What a wise person. Inspires me to keep going strong in my filmmaking and work with people like him one day soon.
Brilliant interview, brilliant actor. In my opinion the reason 'Day' didn't get good press is because it's so bleak and dark. From the opening seen when the chopper lands and they are looking for survivors and you hear the first 'Hello' it sets the tone but other than that its brilliant, it should be up there with the classics. From a fan in Wigan, England 😊👍❤
Steele, one of my favorite characters in the series, and one of the most memorable! I love this guy, I wish I could have met him. Seemed like a genuine, stand up gentleman. Thank you for sharing this interview, Rest in Peace Gary ❤
I could listen to Gary talk all day. His observation near the end about how George's Zombie movies were really about how society and people (and governments and states) react to cataclysmic events was spot on. Covid showed how horrible some can be. Rest in peace Gary.
I met Gary near my home in North Jersey at Chiller Theater, a kind of low budget ComiCon in 1998 or 99. We had a long talk about his work on Day of the Dead and quite a few laughs. A great guy who did standout work on a great film! Hope he is doing well.
Chiller Theater was on in the Pittsburgh area every Saturday night @ midnight, and it was hosted by 'Chilly Billy" AKA Bill Cardille, the father of Lori Cardille. Anyone that grew up there in the 70's and 80's knows exactly what I'm talking about, and it showed horror and science fiction films late at night. It was great.
I hope I haven't told this story here before--forgive me, if I have. In 2003, I saw a Stone Phillips interview with Gary about his remarkable family issues. "That's Steele!" I thought (even though I'd seen his other movies). I jotted down a quick note congratulating him on finding his extended family, and I ended it by saying I "Day" was my fave Romero film, and that Gary was my fave character in it. Sent it off in the mail and forgot about it. (I should note that I have personalized stationery with my contact info, as I'm a writer.) A few weeks later, I'm cooking a very nice dinner for my fiancé when the phone rings. I'm told, "It's Gary." Now, as it so happens, my best friend of 35 years is named Gary, so...lol. I say, "Hello?" And this raucous voice says, "Gabriel, my man, how are you?" After about four minutes of extreme confusion, I realize who it is. Now, I worked in radio. I've interviewed some celebrities, and I've NEVER fanboyed on any of them. When I realized this was Gary Klar, I locked myself in my bedroom. We talked for an hour-and-a-half about everything. He was the nicest guy, and generous. When he found out I was a playwright he told me to get my butt (that's not the word he used) out to where I was needed. We eventually said goodbye, but not before he said something that actually brought tears to my eyes. He said, "Gabe, we need you and your work. Go where the work is. Hell, come to my house--I'll give you some names to call." It was Heavenly...until I realized I'd totally forgotten my fiancé and the dinner I'd been preparing. Needless to say, we had delivery pizza. That was one of the most amazing moments of my life. He gave me his number and his email, but I didn't want to seem like a nuisance, so I never called him--but I did email him a time or two. When I heard of his passing, it was such a loss. What a true gentleman. Rest well, Big Man. And thank you for that amazing hour-and-a-half. I bet there are dozens--if not hundreds--of stories just like this, as he was that type of guy.

This man was truly inspiring, he's so well spoken and his acting the movie was great. It's so great he had such a positive outlook on the films years later. Rest In Peace Gary Klar.
@@TheSeventhDeadlyMatador there are pictures of him lifting in lee karrs book "Day of the dead" behind the scenes. And Gary has a documentary here on RU-vid about his adoption and finding out he had 12 brothers and sisters
At 15 min 40 sec, he's saying it's not really about zombies, it's about how society reacts to an apocalyptic event. I always thought it was about HIV/AIDS, which was peaking in 1985 when the movie came out. The tension between the public demanding a cure vs the scientists trying to explain that science is a slow, uncertain process.
1 of the best zombie films ever DAY OF THE DEAD 85 1st seen it as a kid got on DVD and on my magpad. 4 when I am out and abont .R.I.P. GEORGE A ROMERO.
sometimes critics don't see what really makes a movie good. too talkie? too wordy?? the acting in this movie was phenomenal. the interactions and dialogs between the characters told a story and really drew you into it. the action, the sound score, they just don't make movies like this anymore.
Yes! Finally someone that really gets what made Day of the Dead such a good movie. I found it to be a far more interesting character study than the previous films in the trilogy; we see here a lot more how trauma affected the people in this situation, and the characters had far more depth than in previous “Dead” movies. Plus, the music and visuals were absolutely fantastic to supplement the plot and feel of the movie. Love this classic!
Anyone want to call him a "crazy conspiracy theorist" for agreeing with Orwell and telling us to wake up? ...thought not, just people like me that you don't know.
"Is Mrs. Lombino okay? " I love you baby.....I love you....." " Nobody does this to Russ Crane, nobody does this to Mrs. Russ Crane you glorified stewardess you.....what the matter...you afraid to do a man's job!"
