In defense of bears, those instances of bear attacks are the least likely outcome of a bear encounter. For every mauling, there are far more instances of a bear coming in contact with a human and choosing to avoid them (reasonably, because we are unpredictable and sometimes violent). If you get attacked by a bear, it’s either crazy desperate or you didn’t respect the bear’s space.

@@tikki2340 If you got hard statistics for that it'd be nice. I'd say run them against the same for humans, but I'm not sure such a thing is calculated. I do find it ironic that you call *us* the "unpredictable and sometimes violent" one while defending a literal predator animal.

Ummm, while what you said is technically kind of correct, it's a bit tone deaf. I think the response the question is getting is an indicator of how unsafe women feel around men, which while definitely emotional, is still a valid feeling (also itself an indicator of the general behaviour of men around women). Responding to that with "uhh uhh a bear is more dangerous than a man tho" is a bit fucked tbh.

On a more serious note I do agree it's an indicator of how women feel unsafe about men and I don't blame them but I think this question does more harm than good. For one the main argument put forward for choosing the bear over the men is that bears won't commit s*xual crimes, but this completely overlooks the fact that the vast majority of s*xual crimes are caused by people the victim knows rather than strangers but if the question was "Would you rather meet a bear or your father/uncle/cousin/husband/boyfriend/male aquaintance in the woods?" there would a lot less discussion. Thus I think this question is just outrage bait to create clicks, and lacks empathy too.

It boils down to this: animals are predictable (at least a majority of them). Humans are not predictable. You don't know exactly how a fellow human is going to react to you or if you are safe with said human. That's why women are choosing the bear.

My argument has always been that, even if the absoulte worst came to pass, I could more easily kill a man than a bloody bear.

It would also depend on if you or the man is armed, and what your skills are. I'd say if you have the time to prepare and make spears, you could have the upper hand against a random man, but if the man has a gun obviously that's gonna be a losing battle no matter what, unless you can get the jump on him and he isn't open carrying and has his safety on, because in the time to draw a gun and turn off the safety you might be able to disembowel a man with a spear, at which point you could threaten with that and coerce the man to give you the gun, from there you could safely leave the woods. Most of the interactions with the man would not require any real skills in spearplay, since it would mostly be coersion and getting an upper hand in power, but for the bear you would need to have adequate spear and hunting technique, especially if you are alone against the bear since humans are meant to be hunting in groups. Of course if the man also has time to prepare this could flip on its head a little, but as you get more technologically advanced in weaponry the gap between male and female strength shortens, so as long as you are confident in your weaponmaking and martial arts skills you can be confident in your safety in a matchup against the man. All of that is assuming conflict, though. With a bear (most likely a grizzly, black, sun, or panda bear since the question explicitly states woods, where polar bears do not live) you are much less likely to engage in conflict, as a hiker traveling through remote places usually has anti bear measures like bells, bear spray, and flares, which would be less likely to deter a man (except the bear spray but even that is debatable). In addition, humans naturally like to be together, so there's a good chance the man follows you around thus increasing the chances of you entering into conflict. If you must enter into conflict then, the man would be the obvious choice, but if you have preventative measures for the bear I'd say the bear would be the safer option. All of that assumes a random man though, which as we've seen with hikers, is often not the case at all. Hikers and backpackers are usually very focused on testing their knowledge and fortitude, they have a self confidence and humbleness that many other men in society lack. If I were to encounter a random man, very scary, but if I were to encounter a random hiker or backpacker? Totally different story. Of course there are a few duds, but if we can reasonably cut down the pool of men to just those, I think I would choose the man after all.

Why? What's to worry about a random woman? Men don't typically worry about random women in the street they don't know unlike women worrying about strange men. There's less things to worry about from a woman unless she's armed (which would be the same for a man anyway). Like if an unarmed woman follows a man there's less things to fear happening due to the usual strength difference. A woman can't do that, and the worst case scenarios for a malicious man catching her is far worse than just being killed. A man doesn't need to worry about being left pregnant from their rapist for example, women do (especially in states where you can't even abort the pregnancy regardless of it resulting from rape). Or hell, they could even just lie to you about promising to help you before overpowering you and kidnapping you.

Doesn't matter if it's male or female, if I see another person in the middle of nowhere, I'm on my guard. Women can be just a cruel as men and weapons exists. The danger is the same

HOLD IT! you know that a bear will most likely eat you if given the chance, so you’ll do your best to avoid it. However, a human is more alluring. If one man was picked at random somewhere in the world, what are the chances of that man being a cereal killer, or someone who will stab you in the back once you get to know him? You will know to avoid the bear, but if the man has shoulders that are as tense and massageable as FC’s, then you won’t be able to help but go to great length to get closer to him. The bear is the better choice.

So, we are left at where we started off, is it better to encounter a bear, or a Bear?
