I remembered this show back in 1979. Too bad the show could have been much longer. On a side note, the horn that they sounded from the blockade was also used for overbids on "The Price is Right".
They could bring back this show. Changing the boards is what slowed the thing down. You could play both players' charge and block rounds without a commercial now that you would use computers to do all of this.
My only gripe about this game is that is seems like the Blocker has a distinct advantage. This is the ONLY round I've seen in which the Charger wins. The Charger's duty seems a bit too difficult for its own good. In fact, the Gauntlet round is actually easier than a main-game Charging round, since the contestant has more than a minute to play and no blocks to worry about.
WJBK tv 2 Detroit plus WCPO 9 in Cincinnati had Whew! Did Bay City where Kristi and Kelli Talicska grew up in? It is one of the ten game shows on my list when I'm with The Talicska girls with the other nine The Price Is Right, Treasure Hunt (Geoff Edwards Era), The Gong Show, Family Feud (Dawson Era), Wheel Of Fortune (Syndicated), Press Your Luck, $100,000 Pyramid, Face The Music, and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Possibly. But seeing as how Drew Carey is hosting "TPIR", and Wayne Brady is hosting "LMAD", If "Whew!" should make a comeback, I'd choose either Colin Mochrie or Ryan Stiles.
@gamshwfan You're right about Tammy being an erratic blocker there. Sometimes I wonder if she was even trying. It looked like she just threw them up randomly and hoped for the best.
After Steven Leblang was correct on the 5th level, he called "Level 6" before he was reminded, by rule, to wait until Tom said "Charge!", which cost him a couple of seconds, but he finished it off anyway despite encountering a block. But did Steven Leblang really get a sports journalism job on the west coast, or is this the same Steven Leblang who ended up as a programming executive for Game Show Network, and, since the beginning of 2015, runs his own media business?
You should've also mentioned "Now You See It '74" for expired clock in the solo round. I do not recall the horn being used on Trebek's "Double Dare". The horn was briefly used in "Match Game" and "Press Your Luck". All of these shows were from CBS.
This was a great show. Very underrated. though... I can remember other names of contestants that beat the villians..inlcuding the legendary Randy Amasia.
@heine71 They could always sell it to syndication or GSN. Of course that means GSN would have to do game shows again. And game shows that happened before 2000. :P
Steve, did you eventually get into sports broadcasting? I majored in TV Production/Mass Communications and I had considered at least going out to the west coast to look around for broadcasting jobs. But hey I'm 27 so I got time.
Wasn't the maximum possible Gauntlet time 81 seconds assuming you won all the $20-$50 spaces on the first five levels but lost the round as the charger ($600 for an extra 6 seconds) then go on to win the maximum $750 in the next two rounds as the blocker ($1,500 for an extra 15 seconds)? Of course winning all the $20-$50 spaces on all five lower levels would have been impossible considering the round's 60 second time limit.
