just didnt get this when it was telly. but its the slowest burning joke ever. really subtle, really clever, please release on dvd, please please, and please
"The Fright Honorable." Garth builds himself up to such a huge extent. It reminds me of the worst possible conflations of a few of my friends! Love it! The writing for British comedies of this calibre is unrivalled in the world! A Bit of Fry and Laurie; Red Dwarf; Spaced; Black Books; Darkplace; Snuff Box; Mighty Boosh... in a class all to themselves! "Stop it Garth, you're freaking me out!"
Yeah, studio audience or not, it killed it for me. I really enjoyed Dark Place, but the laughter is keeping me from even watching the second part of this.
I don't see why people are arguing about English vs. American humor. I prefer british humor but you have to understand that they are different types of humor and all mediums of comedy should be respected.
Darkplace was and is the most radical, balls to the wall and daring show chanel 4 ever put out. It made and broke Todd Rivers! It beats the Boosh to death!
ShankingArmitage: Although I love The Mighty Boosh, if I miss an episode, I can take it or leave it 'cause it will come on again, later that night, on Adult Swim. However, I CAN'T MISS DARKPLACE. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace owns The Mighty Boosh, but in the end, I love both.
This is the most intelligent Chat Show I have ever seen ;) That said I remained convinced of the existence of Loos I bet Bram Stoker would have loved "Horrotica" :D
I like laughter tracks, it helps me laugh along and enjoy it, as long as it's good, some are just plain shit and embarrassing. Such as 'Little Miss Joyclen' and 'The Catherine Tate Show'.
Like all traditional chat shows it's filmed before an audience. The video segments are then played to the audience. I remember seeing a web site (must have been channel 4's) with recording dates and ticket application info.
I would kill to see the two of them perform live. Or at least Netherhead, which I only know of because of that one random video of them winning an award for it
I find the laugh track to be very distracting! Other than that, I adore Dean Learner!!! (I bought a regionless DVD player just to watch Darkplace- they don't sell it in the US)
it was filmed in front of a studio audience. i know this for a FACT. but that still doesn't mean that they don't use canned laughter. either way, it works.
I don't know how you can even compare the boosh with darkplace. They are both great and funny shows but they have completely different humor. The boosh is silly and all out kind of comedy while darkplace is witty sharp kind of humor. Both are great in their own ways.
is it just me or do you see a connection between the "I eat alot of cheese which gives me these fantastic vivid dreams" and The Mighty Boosh's Cheese Dreams from series 1?
technically he has been shown in america already loverandfighter because for a few months they showed the whole room of darkplace on adult swim, but as far as a role in something american idk but hopefully he will get something, (on an unrelated note) frankly i'm very surprised that david mitchell hasn't been hasn't been offered anything, the people in charge of things like that need to be doing more to have shows with like brits and americans both to be able to cross over and be hilarious
That's harsh man. It still has the Darkplace vibe. The audience laughter does my head in but it's still vastly superior to most shit on the telly at the moment. Have you ever tried watching anything on ITV? It's impossible. And BBC THREE "comedies" can piss off as well.
I agree entirely.. his dead pan humor that works well on Dark Place is ruined by people laughing at lines that, "in character" he doesn't think are funny.. it really wrecks it. :(
If a tree falls in a forest and I'm not there to see it, and it makes a sound, but I don't hear it, but someone records it, and plays it to me at a dinner party, does that mean I'm still in the forest ? And if I am, then why can't I just take a piss in the garden rather than queueing for the toilet ? And that's if the toilet even exists, I've been trying to use it all fucking night. I'm starting to doubt the existence of the toilet, quite frankly, at this stage in the preceedings.
This is a brilliant suggestion, actually. There was one in the works and they'd cast Gary Dourdan from CSI in the role, but the remaining members of Thin Lizzy won't greenlight the script as is because it focuses too much on Lynott's drug use and not enough on his music (and good on them for it), so it's been shelved. If they ever give it another go, RA would get the accent right, he's got better chops, and he looks a hell of a lot more like him.
For everyone bitching about the laughter, WTF are you talking about!? It's a satirical show just like Darkplace. You need the laughter to convey the sense of realism as another person pointed out below. It would be like trying to watch Darkplace without the introductions and the interview cut-ins, it just wouldn't make any sense.
The British think American comedy sucks because they only watch the shittiest of American shows. There's a big difference between Big Bang Theory and Louie. That being said, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
We only remember the best of comedy shows that float over the water to us. Plus, foreign accents add a certain quaintness that is something of an unfair advantage in comedy comparisons, at times, anyway. It's sort of a pointless debate.
@SpankRamen2 yeah you might be right. I kinda disagree but clearly you've got a sense of humour ramen. unlike the comment writers either side of you. being english helps though, wouldnt have thought they wouldve bothered puttin it out in the US but there must be a market
yea i agree, its really really funny but the laughter track is off putting. cant decide whether it would have been better with none at all or just toned down
@HarleyDalle 2 was good as well. but it's true that they had more budget, fame and substances than they knew what to deal with for the third series and it just didn't have the same feel. was more crude but not as funny
