Nah!! I don't miss it. In the early 2000's the matchday experience became dreadful when the only way to and from the ground was by public transport (unless you lived close by). Buses in Green Street were at a standstill and the queues for the tube station were incredibly long after the game. I stopped going in 2011.
Really miss the old girl 😔 the atmosphere, the chicken run, the intimidating crowd. The new fans/ tourists have accepted the London stadium, but for us older generation Upton Park will always be our home. Great video, I've subscribed to your channel, good luck with your future projects 💜🩵⚒️⚒️⚒️
As a Newcastle fan used to love going to Upton Park win or lose. Got a soft spot for them as I believe many of them do for us, real fans, love their club no matter what, good and bad.
Iv been back to visit Green Street / Upton Park once since we've made the move to the london stadium and it broke my heart walking around there had tears in my eyes.
I went there in 1996 for an FA Cup game. What an experience it was walking from Upton Park tube station down Green Street pass the market and to the ground, great atmosphere there. Sad that they couldn't leave something nice behind.
This is really sad that so little is mentioned about the sites history, glad I got the opportunity to go before they moved. There’s not a huge amount left at our old ground Maine Road but they do have a little monument where the old centre circle was called Gibson’s Green, a tribute to Stan Gibson who was the groundsman for over 40 years.
the murial is still there mate you was right on top of it loved this look back at out true home god dio i miss that place the street vendours the fanzine sellers the badgstalls deacent cheap food the walk down green street before the game great work the statue was there before we moved be lucky steve
You sure the "Long Live the Boylen" mural still there? I thought it got knocked down when they knocked down the old Odeon cinema, to build even my small apartments, i.e. Flats?
I have been a season ticket holder since 2013 in the Bobby Moore lower but the atmosphere at London stadium will never compare to Upton park not even close we lost a key part of our history that night in 2016
My last visit there was for the final game of the 1989/90 season, West Ham v Wolves, both teams in what was then Division 2. Hammers easily won 4-0 with Liam Brady getting the last goal in what was his final game before retiring. Good memories despite a heavy defeat but at least we saw Steve Bull go to the world cup that summer. Sad to see such an iconic ground lost but i guess it's a sign of the times now.
@@RysFootyParadise I think most would be very much against it. The capacity of the ground needs increasing and has been talked about, but nothing confirmed yet. There was speculation before of a possible move out of the city centre to a new location but one of the great advantages of Molineux is its close location and walking distance to the pubs, bars, train station, bus station, etc, plus all of the past history too. Any potential move would certainly meet with stern opposition I'm sure.
Lived, went to school, and worked in Plaistow since 1965, went to my first game around 1967 (aged 8) and saw the like of Moore, Hurst, Peters, Brooking, Sissons, Redknapp, Best, Mc Dowell, Lampard etc ply there trade,............ Green Street to me was the centre of life on match days, the smell of burgers & onions, the badge & rosette and program sellers, The Boleyn pub, Queens market, Odeon cinema Eastham, ABC cinema Upton Park - does anyone remember;- shops like Rumbelows, Cheesemans, Chambers toy shop and the steak house opposite?, `The Golden Egg` cafe in the market place? Many of the old Eastenders moved out over the years, the area now has a predominant (majority) Asian and African population with very little knowledge or interest in the recent past local community = so sad really.
Seems that it was a great area back in the day. Shops and businesses were making a living back then. Although there are still Eastenders living there, the area is deprived and lacks basic essential things to life, to society, to living well and growing up well. Shops and "businesses" are boarded up and closed most of the year as many were given to foreigners on welfare and it shows how useless their "businesses" are. Stop the welfare and most will go.
Looks like the apartments are named after West Ham connections. When you turned off Priory St the block on your right was named Lyall House after manager John Lyall
I had a season ticket for the last 2 seasons at the Boleyn Ground and that final match v Man Utd was a day that I'll always remember. I kept my ticket at London Stadium until Covid. The team is doing well now but those nights under the lights in E13 were something very special ⚒️
Fair enough the stadium was demolished, however, couldn't there have been at least an agreement to have the block of flats reminding the stadium in some way? For example, using a façade colour scheme reminding the hammers colour, or 2 hammers. Maybe 1 block of flat is called "the west stand..." They replaced them with soulless block of flats, which is sad.
First ever visit was in 1979 a 1-2 defeat to Luton Town. A wonderful ground i sadly miss as a season ticket holder at Stratford that just not the same. Yep that was the old supporters club. Thanks Rys
Great watch, thanks for your filming, this is such a sad story, I actually carried out the refurbishment of that Bobby Moore crest and the installation onto the wall, i kept a record and videos of the works, i have an absolute crazy story how we found and purchased the Bobby Moore Crest
I visited the old Boleyn Ground area a couple of weeks ago and in fairness was similarly disappointed about how little legacy has been kept (although I kinda expected that off the back of Footy Adventure's video). What shocked me the most though was the poverty of the local area around Upton Park
@Lord.Patrick it was never ‘nice’, but it was the footballing home of the club I supported as a lad (and obviously still do), so the nostalgia will always live on. Newham is London’s poorest borough, so ‘nice’ is was never - wrong word but I’m sure you get what I meant
Hello mate I have just watched. 👍. WHU ⚒️. Thanks for your interest in the good old days of football. I have been a Hammer fan since I was 10,in 1980 when we won the FA cup. Before then I was Man united. I think you have really done a good job of having a go at bringing the highs and lows of having to change our beloved football stadiums. Cheers bruv. Steve. 👍. ⚒️.
Great video and memories. A massive part of my childhood and early adult life going over there, even when I was on the payroll of another PL club as a young player myself. 😂 The walk to the stadium from the station, having to walk back via Plaistow or East Ham due to the police horses cutting off the barriers to Upton Park on the way home, the roar of a late goal you might’ve missed if you left the stadium a couple of minutes early, the burger stalls, pie and mash, the boozers before and after the game. Just a shame my 3 boys never got to experience it in the end 😢 ⚒️
Elijah Burke swear he was a wrestler 🤣 that’s my WWE fandom coming out 🙈 thanks for the pronunciation mate, I know how to say Ann Boleyn but people seem to say the surname differently when talking about the ground
Sad for Us Older West Ham…My Great Grandfather worked Thames Iron Works, Continued from my Grandad,Dad,ME-My Son-My Old Msn 1st took Me in the Chicken Run 1976-Neva be the Same Again-WHTID “X”
A good but also a sad video to watch. Not many references to West Ham United remain, but you did miss the fact that some of the new buildings are named after previous Managers. You walked past (John) Lyall House at one point. It's funny that you can pronounce Bowen, but not Boleyn 🙂
sorry for my pronunciations... I reckon it's because the West Hams fans around here have dodgey accents like me and it sounds like BOWLING when they say it 🙈
Highbury was always my favourite away trip but a close second was the Boleyn at West Ham. Another proper stadium which was a million times better than the soulless monstrosity that is currently the home of West Ham.
Great video mate when ever I go to places that football grounds once stud it feels so weird don’t you think. The pub they used for the film green street was right by Brentford’s old ground.
@@RysFootyParadise ye did the old baseball ground the other day it’s crazy. You kinda picture your self at the old ground when fans were supporting there club
@@RysFootyParadise I would be gutted ye it’s part of every Wednesday fans life. May not be perfect and need work but it’s iconic mate. I love the retro old school grounds with character
Sorry, can't watch this. I stood with my great grandfather, grandfather, father (who scouted for the club for years), uncles, cousins and brother (who played in the youth team for 4 years) from 1974 until the year it closed. :( COYI
The memorial garden is on green st just before the church. The long live the Boleyn murial is no more. Knocked due to the building work recently. Nathans pie n mash went about a year after we left.
I went to the Boyleyn in October 1999, as an Arsenal fan. My mate, a West Ham supporter, got us two tickets in the Bobby Moore stand. I was advised by a steward that I should remove my Arsenal jersey prior to kick off. It was a miserable day, as the Irons won 2-1 courtesy of a Di Canio brace. My most vivid memory, however, is of the West Ham fans abusing Vieira from the first whistle to the last. Still, a great old football stadium.
Had a season ticket back in those days that game was one of the highlights of the season, a season where Di Canio was unplayable if he was in the mood. He basically beat you guys on his own that day. The second goal was Gascoigne-esque as he flicked it over and around Keown then put it top corner. Vieira spitting at Ruddock as he went off.
The difference between Highbury & The Boleyn is the Highbury’s stands were listed buildings so had to be kept - at least the edifices were. The buildings and streets around the site of what was The Boleyn are named after former managers & people linked with the club. It is, however, heartbreaking- I’ve only been back once since.
Mate - for those of us born and grown up there - it is soul destroying going into that prison block. The "centre spot" is woeful, with nothing to commemorate the team and its history. It would not have taken much to put a fukin plaque at least saying that it was actually the centre spot. The pie and mash was Nathan's, now closed, and the only remaining one now is up by the Abbey Arms - bless 'em. I can't belive the sales "deal" didn't require more deferrence to the club's history. Even the memorial garden looks like a little prison too.
I went to griffin park yesterday and apparently Brentford have been promised a “memorial garden” too… I fear for them after visiting the Boleyn as like you say - surely a plaque at least could have been put there 😞
Would move back in a heartbeat. Sadly not possible. I’ve never been back to the area since August 2016, when I watched us lose to Leicester (eventual champions) and I just couldn’t, would be too heartbreaking. The match day experience will never be what it was walking down Green St, time moves on I know but what we’ve got now is in no way better IMHO.
Boleyn Ground - not Bowling Ground thank you - age from about 8 like all kids we were handed over the entrance styles and then made our way down the front - you could literally touch the pitch it was that close - that was about 63 years ago
I loved going to Upton Park - night games were special due to the very close proximity of the pitch. I went to both the North Bank and then the Chicken Run. The new stadium is dreadful as a viewing experience. I was at the Man U game at Upton Park when Blackburn won the league. Great days. Green Street was full of fanzine sellers and Millwall was always a feisty affair.
Even though it was United’s bogey ground - I always looked forward to the games as the intensity was fantastic. Spurs have worked wonders keeping their home in the same place
@@defs8073 yes we all know that. Most fans referred to it as Upton Park as did commentators and pundits, however. Shame the Club’s soul was sold down the river.
The new flats and streets actually look fine. Arsenal were forced to keep their stand because it was significant architecturally- West Ham's wasn't, however good the atmosphere. So it was never going to be like Arsenal. But I agree, there could be much more done in terms of memorialising the old ground. I think Maine Road might be a better comparison, though I understand you have a budget! Good video.
There could be more done.... like fixing all those closed and boarded up businesses that were given to foreigners on welfare that can't run them since they sit boarded up most of the year (boarded up businesses don't make any money so they live off welfare) ... and give them back to english owners that can manage them economically efficiently .... that way you'll see an economic increase and recovery. Heck, you should take back and fix all the country for what I feel...
Sullivan has ruined our club. Apparently a big soulless stadium and a new terrible badge First game at Upton Park with my old man when I was 8. Lost 0-2 to Arsenal was in the chicken run My last game 3-3 ironically Arsenal again last season at Upton Park, was in the south bank a spit away where i stood with the old man in the chicken run I refused to go to the new stadium and still not been So to TBH I’m not a supporter no longer, I’m a fan Still obviously follow them and watch all the games on TV Watch all the RU-vid West Ham channels My youngest Daughter has been and she said Dad compared to Upton Park you will hate it My School mates offer me free tickets to go with them and I still say no thanks Family friends all born in West Ham, Plaistow, Canning Town and all went to School in Canning Town Where was Sullivan born?
Sorry to hear that mate 😞 I’ve just been to griffin park prior to the new Brentford stadium tour… a lot of similarities happening there with the 4 pubs on each corner of the old ground… but at least their new stadium is close to the pitch and feels more like a football ground
@rosdenby David Sullivan is Welsh...... say no more........ I totally agree with what you are saying. I was in the North Bank and then the Chicken Run 😢
Its a chronic problem with this country, every single day is like a constant battle to prevent something providing a public service from being torn down and replaced with flats only for the global elite...they could have at leadt built an office complex there
Great video... sad story really .. another club sold its soul. London Stadium doesn't suit West Ham at all... its for tourists lets be honest. I did have a laugh when you said 'Frodo' ...sounded exactly like Samwise Gamgee
Can’t watch this… too upsetting that the clubs owners took away the club’s identity just so they don’t have to pay as much maintenance. Some things are more important than money and material things
As the away fans sing, we sold our soul for a shithole, no need as we know that, and they also shafted us with a crap badge. Used to go regularly to Upton Park, can’t stomach the athletes stadium so very rarely go home games now, filled with a lot of tourists as well. ⚒️
Thanks David Gold and Sullivan. Sold our soul and probably made a fortune out of it. Nothing prominent to suggest what once stood there and they couldn’t give a rats arse either.
You donut, parts of Highbury are listed so can’t be knocked down. None of Upton Park was but I made a lot of money building them flats. You completely missed the memorial garden where 200 people who were fans were reburied. If West Ham stayed there they would never have won a Euro trophy & would not have 62000 supporters every home game.
I’m not an expert on it mate, just went down for fun and to discover what it’s looking like now 😊 thanks for the info though - yeah I agree there’s lots of positives from moving… I’m just a bit nostalgic 😅
There are no positives to have come out of moving I’m afraid. It’s never been the same football club since we left. There’s more to Football than tourist supporter stadiums and Tin pot trophies. I’m glad you made some money though…
