buck rowley Actually it's pretty sad when you think about it. I bet that these were Germans that fled back to Germany at the end of world war 2. Those people often were poor farmers who didn't have much valuable possessions. As the family left they took what they could and the father must have been hiding these belongings in the hope of return or getting them back. My family had nothing left after they fled. They had no time to get their stuff and they even almost forgot one of my uncles

Perhaps Bhutan. Problem is that you have to deal with swampy post war Europe, by law it is, indeed, property of government, morally you would have to investigate all steps of thins man's father during and before. Germans did same to the Czechs before war. Who is better?

Shannah D. As had the German speaking people in north and west Bohemia. When the German speaking countries invade your country and force you to hand over your property, labour and service to them leaving many of your people to starve and gassing and burning thousands of them you can be damn sure they are going to face some sort of issue if they once lived within your boarders. Every European country ejected Axis nationals and confiscated in return, their belongings as compensation. Whether its right or wrong I am not passing judgement on, merely stating how it is.

If the 80 year old, Rudy, was the only person to know where his father stashed things, they should be his, and his ALONE. The Czech government needs to do the right thing, and return this man's property to him.
@MrToradragon
@MrToradragon 7 лет назад
It will most likely end in museum. There is problem that this one singular event could trigger all demands from millions of Germans demanding return of their property. Only solution would be special law passed by parliament, but it would be silly law about socks and old books. I suppose that he could be able to gain personal things like photographies, albums or other such things, that could be perhaps negotiable and unless they are listed somewhere no one would search for them (And unless clerk is someone heartless there will not be any personal photographies listed), but not anything large, many of them even has no use today, like that old phone book or said socks.

Where are you from? Are you at least from Europe? There were events that resulted in war, those Germans in Czechoslovakia took not small part in starting of war, they did same thing to other, thus after war as measure to prevent any further problems they were expelled to Germany and Austria and their property confiscated. Those laws are part of foundations on which post war Europe was constructed.

greedy government
@nunyabisnass1141
@nunyabisnass1141 7 лет назад
Maybe. The government likely won't profit off of them directly by selling them. They most likely will find a home in an historical and cultural museum, that more often than not operate at a loss. If you want to talk about greedy governments, I offer Spain, with its numerous maritime violations, to seize bounties found by treasure hunters. Their navy has boarded private ships while claiming to be in Spanish waters looking for drug runners, detained and jailed people for not revealing their search logs, created diplomatic hazards for foreign governments...

why were his father's items considered property of the Czechoslovakia Government? They are his son's now?
@MrToradragon
@MrToradragon 7 лет назад
In short: There is law, decree, stating that Germans taking part in treason against Czechoslovakia have to go and all property left is now property of Czechoslovakia. This was proclaimed by president (Parliament was not working in first months and years after war) and government, as response on events of WWII and fact that German speaking parts of Czechoslovakia seceded and become part of third Reich, that was one of few triggers of WWII. As well Germans inflicted similar law on non-Germans in border regions of Czech republic. Czechs were not allowed to gain or inherit property in occupied parts and were forced to sell them to Germans and so on.

When I was a kid, me and my friends found a map in the attic. It led us to a diner where criminals were hiding. We went into a tunnel in the floor, there were boobie traps and in the end we found a pirate ship. We used the money we found to stop a developer from making our homes into a golf course. We ate dominoes pizza and called it godfathers pizza.
